It represents nature, growth and success. It’s also the colour of the heart chakra, and for some, the colour of money. A jewel name can give a baby everlasting blessings, because jewels are so long-lasting.”

And while some parents might not follow spiritual traditions, Inbaal believes gemstone names can still offer their own kind of magic: “Naming a child after anything valuable links them with that value. Even if you’re not spiritually inclined, simply liking the sound, meaning or history of a jewel name is enough. Spiritual luck and protection come included.”

However, she does advise taking time to understand the full story behind a name. “I’d encourage parents to look into the history of a gemstone before bestowing it on a child. Take ‘Amethyst’ — it means ‘not drunk’ and is traditionally associated with clarity and common sense. So you might want to consider whether a name linked to drunkenness is right for your little one!”

Read more:

100 baby names from Greek mythology

180 cool baby names for boys and girls

Top 200 British names for boys and girls

Looking for the perfect Japanese boy name? Whether you're honouring Japanese heritage, drawn to the language’s lyrical quality, or simply love the meanings behind traditional names, this list of 150 Japanese male names is here to inspire.

From cool, cute, and unique to old and most common choices, we've rounded up a wide variety of Japanese male names and their meanings.

Some names appear in more than one category — and that’s no mistake. In Japanese, a single name can embody multiple qualities.

For instance, a name like Hinata can be both widely used and irresistibly cute, while Kaito feels both popular and undeniably cool.

These intentional overlaps reflect the rich versatility and depth of Japanese naming traditions.

Jump to:
Most common Japanese boy names | Unique and rare Japanese boy names | Old Japanese boy names | Cool Japanese boy names | Cute Japanese boy names

Japanese naming traditions

Japanese names often carry deep meanings tied to nature, virtues, and heritage. Traditionally, Japanese boy names are formed using one or two kanji characters, each with their own significance — such as hikari (light), taka (noble), or katsu (victory). These kanji are chosen not just for sound, but for meaning, aesthetics, and even auspicious symbolism.

Many names also follow generational customs — with elements like “ro” (meaning son) or birth order indicators such as “ichi” (first), “ji” (second), or “saburo” (third son) appearing frequently in traditional names.

While modern Japanese male names may blend creativity and trendiness, parents often still seek a balance of tradition and individuality — choosing names that honour cultural roots while giving their child a unique identity.

Most common Japanese boys names

These are some of the most well-known and widely used Japanese male first names — great choices if you’re wondering what is a good boy name in Japanese?

Haruto – Sun flying

Sota – Big and peaceful

Yuto – Gentle person

Ren – Lotus

Hiroto – Great flight

Riku – Land

Daiki – Great radiance

Takumi – Artisan

Kaito – Ocean flying

Ryusei – Shooting star

Shota – Big flying

Kenta – Healthy and strong

Yuki – Happiness / snow

Ryota – Refreshing and strong

Taiga – Big river

Koki – Bright and joyful

Sho – Soar or fly

Toma – Top of the circle

Itsuki – Tree

Reo – Brave man

Keita – Blessed and large

Minato – Harbour

Sora – Sky

Hayato – Falcon person

Hinata – Sunflower / sunny place

Ryo – Clear or refreshing

Haruki – Spring tree

Aoi – Hollyhock / blue

Yuma – Gentle truth

Subaru – Unite (also a constellation)

Unique and rare Japanese boy names

These Japanese male names are far less common but beautifully distinctive — ideal if you’re after something meaningful and unusual.

Naoya – Honest and straightforward

Isamu – Courage

Jiro – Second son

Arata – New, fresh

Masaki – True hope

Kiyoshi – Pure

Yoru – Night

Souta – Smooth big

Kazuki – Peaceful tree

Takeru – Warrior

Kaito – Sea and soar

Rento – Polished lotus

Akihiro – Bright and vast

Shuji – Disciplined rule

Nagi – Calm or lull

Aoiro – Blue colour

Michio – Man on a journey

Eita – Eternally thick

Makoto – Sincere

Saku – Blossom

Soma – Smooth truth

Ichiro – First son

Fumito – Scholarly person

Reiji – Courteous child

Masaru – Victory

Kaoru – Fragrance

Rihito – Person of principles

Tsukasa – Manager / ruler

Ayumu – Walk or progress

Akito – Bright person

Unique and rare Japanese boy names

These Japanese male names are far less common but beautifully distinctive — ideal if you’re after something meaningful and unusual.

Naoya – Honest and straightforward

Isamu – Courage

Jiro – Second son

Arata – New, fresh

Masaki – True hope

Kiyoshi – Pure

Yoru – Night

Souta – Smooth big

Kazuki – Peaceful tree

Takeru – Warrior

Kaito – Sea and soar

Rento – Polished lotus

Akihiro – Bright and vast

Shuji – Disciplined rule

Nagi – Calm or lull

Aoiro – Blue colour

Michio – Man on a journey

Eita – Eternally thick

Makoto – Sincere

Saku – Blossom

Soma – Smooth truth

Ichiro – First son

Fumito – Scholarly person

Reiji – Courteous child

Masaru – Victory

Kaoru – Fragrance

Rihito – Person of principles

Tsukasa – Manager / ruler

Ayumu – Walk or progress

Akito – Bright person

Old Japanese boy names

These male names have vintage roots and traditional flair — often seen in historical texts or used by older generations.
From ‘Admiral’ to ‘Scrotum’, Australia has officially banned 89 baby names — some of them will raise your eyebrows

Choosing a baby name can be one of the most joyful (and stressful) parts of pregnancy – but if you're in Australia, the options are now officially 89 names shorter.

A new list of banned baby names, revealed by 7 News Australia, shows what you can’t call your child under national naming laws. And while a few are obvious no-gos, others are bound to surprise even the most seasoned name-nerd.

From official titles like ‘Duke’ and ‘Queen’ to eyebrow-raising picks like ‘Thong’, ‘Nutella’ and ‘Harry Potter’, there’s no shortage of quirky choices parents have (unsuccessfully) tried to get past the system.

What names are actually banned?

The rules vary slightly from state to state, but across the country, the same core principles apply: a name must not be obscene, offensive, misleading, or include symbols, punctuation, or titles that imply status or rank.

That means names like ‘Doctor’, ‘President’, ‘Captain’ and ‘Messiah’ are out. And so are cultural icons like ‘Jesus Christ’, ‘Adolf Hitler’, and even ‘Anzac’ — the term used to refer to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

Also blacklisted are brand names like ‘Facebook’ and ‘Ikea’, slang terms like ‘Ranga’ and ‘Bonghead’, and words that would make most parents wince – looking at you, ‘S**thead’ and ‘Scrotum’.

And no, you can’t name your baby after infamous Aussie outlaw ‘Ned Kelly’ either.

Why so strict?

Naming laws are designed to protect children from potential embarrassment, bullying, or having a name that causes confusion or suggests a false identity.

Names longer than 50 characters are also off-limits, and anything that could be perceived as a joke or a stunt won’t fly with registry offices.

Speaking on Sunrise, Australian presenter Edwina Bartholomew said:

“It’s a tough decision for any parent: what to name her new bundle of joy… You can’t have a little Thong, which is a shame. You also can’t have a little Cyanide.”

She also pointed out the grey areas:

“Marshal is banned — but I know a Marshall with two Ls.”

The full list of banned names in Australia

While most of us might never dream of naming our baby ‘Scrotum’ or ‘Osama Bin Laden’, others have clearly tried – and failed. Australia's banned names list is a mix of the offensive, the official, and the downright bizarre.

Here's a breakdown of some of the most eye-catching categories:

Titles & Ranks: Admiral, Duke, Queen, Judge, Prime Minister

Religious or spiritual figures: God, Christ, Jesus Christ, Dalai Lama, Saint, Satan

Pop culture & brands: Harry Potter, Ikea, Facebook, iMac

Offensive or crude: Dickhead, Scrotum, Bonghead, S**thead, Smelly

Misleading or political: Nazi, Medicare, Terrorist, Anzac, Osama Bin Laden

The full list is below!

Admiral

Adolf Hitler

Anzac

Australia

Baron

Bishop

Brigadier

Bomb

Bonghead

Brother

Cadet

Captain

Chief

Christ

Chow Tow

Colonel

Commander

Commissioner

Commodore

Constable

Corporal

Cyanide

Dalai Lama

Dame

Devil

Dickhead

Doctor

Duke

Emperor

Facebook

Father

G-Bang

General

God

Goddess

Harry Potter

Honour

Ikea

iMac

Inspector

Jesus Christ

Judge

Justice

King

Lady

Lieutenant

Lord

Madam

Mafia

Majesty

Major

Marijuana

Marshal

Medicare

Messiah

Minister

Mister

Monkey

Nazi

Ned Kelly

Nutella

Officer

Osama Bin Laden

Panties

Passport

Pope

Premier

President

Prime Minister

Prince

Princess

Professor

Queen

Ranga

Robocop

Saint

Satan

Scrotum

Seaman

Sergeant

S**thead

Sir

Sister

Smelly

Snort

Socceroos

Terrorist

Thong

Virgin

While this list might seem extreme, it’s a reminder that naming your child isn’t entirely a free-for-all – even in the UK, certain restrictions apply. The UK government can refuse names deemed offensive or containing numbers or symbols (think ‘@lex’ or ‘Baby$mith’).

And while you can technically call your child ‘Princess’ or ‘King’ here, it's always wise to consider the implications of a name on your child’s future – from playground nicknames to job applications.

So, go wild with the baby name books, but maybe think twice before writing ‘Lord Commander Facebook’ on the birth certificate.

Is your baby’s name a typo?

Jewish baby naming rituals

Naming a baby is an important ritual in Jewish culture and as a result there are many community-based traditions and rituals associated with the special act. Depending on their ancestry Jewish families may choose a name that commemorates a deceased relative (Ashkenazic Jews with European ancestry) or choose a name to honour a living relative (Sephardic Jews of Middle Eastern ancetry).

For boys, the Jewish naming cermony is called the Brit Milah and takes places on the 8th day after birth. At this ceremony the baby boy is given a Hebrew name that wil be used in religious contexts, such as during prayers, at his Bar Mitzvah, marriage, and when being called to the Torah.

Jewish girls can have a the naming ceremony known as Simchat Bat (Celebration of the Daughter) or for Sephardic communities, Zeved Habat (Gift of the Daughter) that usually takes place on the first Shabbat after the girl's birth. This ceremony can happen in the synagogue or at home and involves symbolic acts such as blessings, prayers and wrapping the baby in a special cloth.

These ceremonies are often followed by a seudat mitzvah, a celebratory meal where family and friends gather to celebrate the new baby.
