Don’t let summer late nights wreck your child’s sleep. Here’s how to keep bedtimes calm, consistent and melatonin-friendly.

With summer holidays in full swing and routines out the window, the temptation to let bedtime rules slide is real. But according to sleep expert Martin Seeley, it’s worth thinking twice before allowing a “just one more” kind of schedule.

Martin, CEO and Senior Sleep Expert at MattressNextDay, says a relaxed routine over summer is natural, but warns that completely ditching the structure can make it tough to reset once school starts again.

“Even minor differences in wake time can disrupt our body’s natural rhythms,” he explains, and that goes double for little ones.

Here’s what every parent needs to know about sleep schedules over the summer holidays, and how to keep things steady without losing the joy of longer days.

Why sleep routines still matter during the holidays

It’s easy to assume that letting kids sleep in or stay up later during the holidays won’t do any harm, but Martin says the knock-on effect can be significant.

“While it might seem harmless, this habit can throw off the circadian clock and lead to long-term issues,” he warns. “Irregular sleep schedules, where bedtimes and wake times vary drastically between weekdays and weekends, can negatively impact mood, physical and mental health, social interactions, and even school performance.”

And once late nights and lie-ins start to pile up? “The risk is that they’ll gradually begin to sleep later each day,” he explains. “This cycle continues, making it harder to get back on track and maintain healthy sleep patterns.”

6 expert-approved ways to keep bedtime on track this summer

1. Soak up the sun

Morning sunlight plays a big role in regulating the body’s sleep-wake cycle. “Sunshine is really important for getting to sleep, as it produces melatonin,” says Martin. His advice? Get outside early.

“Try a family walk, or kick a ball around in the park, anything outdoors will help regulate their body’s sleep patterns, meaning they’ll be ready for rest come evening.”

2. Set up a wind-down window

Screens and overstimulation close to bedtime can make it harder for kids to switch off, so Martin recommends starting with a calming, screen-free activity.

“Drawing, crafting or puzzles can help calm them down and make it easier to drift off,” he explains. “A great bedtime story can also promote relaxation, and signal to your child that it’s time to wind down.”

Dim the lights while you’re at it. “Switching to lamps with low-watt bulbs promotes melatonin production,” Martin adds.

3. Offer a snooze-friendly snack

“A small snack before bed can help your child sleep through the night, but it’s important to pick the right one,” says Martin.

Look for snacks that contain tryptophan, a sleep-promoting amino acid. “Good options include oat biscuits, bananas, carrots or peanut butter on toast. Avoid sugary or fatty snacks, which can have the opposite effect.”

4. Make your routine feel easy and familiar

A consistent set of pre-bed rituals helps kids wind down both physically and emotionally. “Start with brushing teeth, washing their face, using the toilet, these promote hygiene, but also signal that bedtime is near,” Martin says.

Then it’s into PJs, a quick chat about their day, and finally a bedtime story. “This predictable sequence creates positive associations with bedtime and supports better sleep quality.”

5. Don’t skip the goodnight kiss

That last loving moment before lights out isn’t just sweet, it’s science-backed. “Touch and affection before bed trigger the release of oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and relaxation,” Martin explains. “A kiss at bedtime signals to the brain that it’s time to unwind.”

6. Stick to the ‘once you’re in bed, you stay in bed’ rule

Holiday or not, kids love to stall bedtime with one last request, another story, a trip to the loo, a drink of water. But Martin warns that giving in too often can disrupt the routine.

“Make it clear that once they’re in bed, they must stay in bed,” he says. “If they do get out, don’t react. Just walk them back quietly without saying anything. That consistency supports the rule.”

Be flexible, but keep the rhythm

You don’t need to run your house like a boot camp during the school holidays. But maintaining a basic bedtime structure, even on weekends or when away, can make all the difference come September.

Read more:

From bald lawns to broken fences: the price parents are happy to pay for screen-free summer fun

Parents are being warned they could face fines for leaving kids alone in vehicles — even just briefly

50+ places where kids can eat free or for £1 this summer holiday 2025

Is baby number 2 on the way? You might want to try a baby sprinkle.

If you've never heard of a 'baby sprinkle', then allow us to shed light on this wonderful, low-cost and low-fuss alternative to baby showers.

While there's no doubt baby showers are a great way of celebrating your upcoming newborn with the ones you love, not all of us enjoy standing under a spotlight. Plus, what if it's your second baby and you don't want to do that planning all over again?

That's where baby sprinkles come in. These smaller, more intimate affairs are bound to suit those who just want a bit of time with close family and friends before the baby comes. They don't put as much of an emphasis on games, and gifts are far less essential, although still encouraged!

Below, we've put together a guide to what you can expect from a baby sprinkle, as well as answering your questions, like what to ask for and who to invite.

To help us help you, we've also partnered with baby registry platform MyCrib. This site is a great, fuss-free way of assembling your dream wish list before sending it out to family and friends.

You can pull items from the platform's handy curated recommendations, or paste URLs from any external site, which means there really is no limit to what you can get for your new baby.

For more details, check out our guide to what a baby registry is, plus the best baby shower gifts.

What is a baby sprinkle?

What is the difference between a baby sprinkle and a baby shower?

Who should you invite to a baby sprinkle?

What should a baby sprinkle wish list look like?

What is a baby sprinkle?

A baby sprinkle is a much smaller, more intimate version of a baby shower, often designed for the arrival of a second (or third, or fourth...) baby.

For parents who like less of a fuss, or consider themselves seasoned professionals, a sprinkle is far more relaxed and quiet, relying less on games and structure and more on gentle, supportive vibes.

A sprinkle usually takes place around the third trimester, and there's also a much smaller emphasis on gifts. Like the name suggests, first-time parents are "showered" with presents like buggies and highchairs, but for any further additions to your brood, you likely already have the essentials, so you're merely "sprinkled" with them.

For a baby sprinkle, you can use MyCrib to find more cute and aesthetic pieces, like an updated wardrobe, new toys or nursery decorations, and assemble them into a registry.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

What is the difference between a baby sprinkle and a baby shower?

Baby Shower

A baby shower is often a more formal gathering. It features a larger guest list, a theme with decorations, and a range of games and quizzes. Parents-to-be also require a longer wish list with more big-ticket items like prams, cribs and car seats.

Baby Sprinkle

A baby sprinkle is a small, relaxed gathering with a reduced guest list. You can still play games and quizzes, but overall, it has a gentler feel with plenty of chit chat. Gifts also tend to be smaller and less expensive, like baby clothes and cuddly toys.

Who should you invite to a baby sprinkle?

The guest list is entirely up to you, but most tend to invite a smaller crowd to a baby sprinkle, so close friends and immediate family. If you're looking for numbers, we'd say around 5-15.

The important thing is that once you have your guest list, you can send them your MyCrib registry by simply popping the link in a group chat or email chain.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

What should a baby sprinkle wish list look like?

As we've said, a baby sprinkle wish list is normally smaller and full of nice-to-have items rather than the essentials. The good thing about MyCrib is you can pull in items from any third-party site like Zara, H&M and John Lewis.

Here's an idea of what you could list for a baby shower vs a baby sprinkle, or you can take a look at MyCrib's baby sprinkle example list.

Baby Shower Wish List

Airo Pushchair

Doona Infant Car Seat & Stroller

Snüz SnüzPod 4 Bedside Crib

Mamas & Papas Born to be Wild Cot Mobile

Mamas & Papas Turtle Bibs

Nanobebe Baby Soothers 0-3 Month

Comfy Cubs Muslin Cloths

Mamas & Papas Snax Highchair

Tommee Tippee Natural Start Baby Bottle Newborn Starter Kit

Baby Sprinkle Wish List

John Lewis Organic Cotton Bodysuits

Truly Baby Faux Fur Lined Snowsuit

Olli Ella Nyla Baby Changing Basket

SnüzCloud Sleep Aid

H&M Teddy storage basket

H&M Round Lion rug

Need more inspiration? MyCrib shows you what expecting parents are adding to their wishlists. See the trending product here.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

Read more:

Best thermometers for babies and children in 2025

Best travel cots 2025

Best first pedal bikes

Neutral colours

<img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/28/2025/04/GettyImages-1464259187-862310e.jpg" width="4660" height="3106" alt="Creative gender neutral baby shower or birthday decoration in the garden.
If you've seen the parenting section of any department store over the past few years or scrolled through #parenting on TikTok, you'll know that neutral colours are all the rage. Whether that's 'champagne' or 'taupe', these neutral, warm tones are everywhere, and it's easy to see why. There's a minimalist elegance to the neutral colour palette that will lend your baby shower a sense of simple sophistication. It's also gender neutral, making it an ideal pick if the mum-to-be doesn't yet know the gender of their baby.

What decorations do you need?

Classic decorations like balloons, bunting and simple table dressing are great picks for an elegant neutral baby shower. Look for warmer whites, off-whites, browns and greens and then use an accent colour like gold to add an extra pop of elegance to proceedings.

2. Maximalist colours

On the other end of the colour spectrum is the maximalist style, which embraces bright colours and elaborate displays. Inspired by the 'dopamine dressing' trend that swept TikTok, this theme is ideal if you're looking to wow the mum-to-be with something truly special. Ideal for summer or for maximalist mums, here understated elegance gives way to bright pops of colour that draw the eye, putting a smile on your face in the process.

What decorations do you need?

This is an ideal theme for creatives as it involves matching various bright colours to create a harmonious sense of over-the-top fun. Lean on floral displays here by bringing in a florist to craft some bright centrepieces and photo-ops that'll help elevate the vibe for all your guests.

3. Classic Storybook Theme

If you're looking for a timeless, easy and nostalgic baby shower theme, then look no further than the classic storybook theme. Bring children's books to life with your decorations, including books and vintage paper, to add that extra sense of storybook magic to the experience.

Start by selecting the books you want to spotlight, for example, a 'Winnie the Pooh' theme could include lots of bright yellows, reds and, of course, tons of honey-flavoured snacks. Incorporating reading time into the baby shower could be a really nice way to bring the magic of storytelling to life, especially if your guests will be bringing children.

What decorations do you need?

Books, books and more books. This could be a great opportunity to get your guests to chip in by bringing along their favourite storybooks from their childhood. You can use book covers for the stories you choose to lead the colour scheme, and you could even try recreating the cover as a cake. Balloon arrangements are also a great shout here. Pull the colours out of the books you've chosen to create a simple and show-stopping decoration that can instantly transform and fill a space.

4. Woodland Wonder

Is the mum-to-be a big fan of the outdoors? Or maybe you're looking for a nice, cute and cosy theme for an autumn baby shower. Either way, a woodland theme is a great, versatile pick for a baby shower, working for both a boy or a girl.

Greens, browns and rustic elements are your friend here. Look to the autumn season and classic woodland animals like foxes, hedgehogs and rabbits for inspiration. A crafting station makes for a great activity at a woodland-themed baby shower (or any baby shower, really), especially if you've got children coming along.

What decorations do you need?

Faux leaves are a great way to add texture to a space without breaking the bank, especially as they come in a range of warm, autumnal colours. You might also want to look at dried flowers as well as wood, gold and copper accents for things like invitations, picture frames and themed signage.

5. Afternoon Tea

You could take the tea party theme in several directions. You could go down the Alice in Wonderland route and throw a Mad Hatter's tea party. You could also go for a vintage Bridgerton vibe complete with cups and saucers, beautiful floral centrepieces and string quartet covers of Taylor Swift.

Whatever approach you take, a classic tea party theme is always a guaranteed winner. Tea tasting with flavours and varieties from around the world makes for a great activity here, especially if you're holding an alcohol-free baby shower before baby is born.

What decorations do you need?

Fine china, vintage table runners, classic floral bouquets paired with classic scones and finger sandwiches arranged on that cake stand your grandmother has had for decades. Lean into pastel tones for this theme to create a sophisticated and elegant setting.

Read more:

Best thermometers for babies and children in 2025

Best travel cots 2025

Best first pedal bikes

A must-have for any child's bookshelf, Dear Zoo is a classic for a reason. It's filled with favourite zoo animals that young children will have great fun finding by lifting the flaps, and is illustrated with bright and bold artwork.

Parents love how engaging Dear Zoo is for their 1 year olds, parent tester Yvonne said "it's so much fun for little hands to engage with, lifting the flaps" and parent tester Abbie told us "it's interactive with flaps, but also simple to understand and great for tackling first words."

Plus, it's a board book and made with thick card pages, so it's durable and can withstand many years of reading (and potential baby bashes!). Parent tester Charlene said, "Dear Zoo is my top recommendation for 1-year-olds and is still a strong favourite in our household. It's engaging, fun and hard-wearing."

We make up stories about the characters on the pages, but the Peekaboo aspect is brilliant!"

Each book in the Peekaboo series, from Peekaboo Dog and Peekaboo Lion to Peekaboo Moon and Peekaboo Sun, features 10 sliders that babies can push, pull or turn, plus there's a surprise mirror at the end. Alongside the fun, interactive elements is a fun rhyming text to ensure that this book will keep babies captivated and engaged.

Baby registries are a great of way make sure you get the items you want and need for your newborn.

Getting ready for your new arrival is exciting – but it can also feel a bit much. From big-ticket essentials like prams and car seats to those adorable extras you never knew you needed until you saw them, the list can feel endless.

That’s where a baby registry can be a game-changer. It helps you organise what you really need, avoid duplicates, and gently guide friends and family toward gifts you’ll actually use and love.

Do you need a baby registry? Not exactly – but it can make life a whole lot easier. It helps you stay organised, avoid duplicate gifts, and lets friends and family feel confident they’re choosing something you’ll genuinely want and use. Guests love knowing they’re getting it right and you won’t have to worry about returning duplicates or awkwardly accepting yet another nappy caddy.

That’s where MyCrib comes in. It’s a modern baby registry platform designed to do exactly that and more. Built for parents-to-be, it brings together real, parent recommendations, effortless sharing, and features like group gifting and universal product links, so you can add items from anywhere.

Here’s everything you need to know about setting up your baby registry - and why we think MyCrib makes it easier than ever.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

Jump to:

What is a baby registry?

When should I start a baby registry?

How to create a baby registry

What to add to your registry

How to share your baby registry

What is a baby registry?

A baby registry is a list of items that parents-to-be would like to receive as gifts – much like a wedding registry, but tailored for everything baby. It’s a helpful way to share what you really need with family and friends, and it helps avoid any unwanted double-ups.

Registries can include everything from everyday essentials like nappies and baby grows to bigger investment items like cribs, buggies and monitors.

Baby registries and baby showers go hand in hand. Many parents create their list in time for the shower, giving guests a clear, thoughtful way to choose gifts they know will be genuinely useful and appreciated – whether it’s something essential or a sweet little extra.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

When should I start a baby registry?

You can start your baby registry whenever it feels right for you. Many parents begin around the 20-week mark, or whenever they have shared their news, as it gives plenty of time to think through what’s needed, plan purchases, and gradually build a list of meaningful gifts for friends and family to choose from.

How to create a baby registry

There are a few different platforms you can create a baby registry on, the most popular would be Amazon, John Lewis and MyCrib. A dedicated platform like MyCrib is a great option as it’s the only one that’s designed specifically for expecting parents. It offers real tips from other mums and dads, honest product reviews, and a super intuitive setup process.

What to add to your registry

Not sure what to add to your registry ? MyCrib has a whole section which shows you what other mums and dads have added to their list and loved, you can see that here.

You can also use their interactive checklist to make sure you have exactly what you might need, neatly broken down by room, routine and life stage. If you create an account on MyCrib you’ll also find a range of example registries to inspire you, from minimalist lists to everything-but-the-kitchen-sink wishlists shared by real parents.

Simply create a free account, add product links from your favourite brands or retailers, and customise your list with colours and baby info. Once you're ready, it’s easy to share via a single link with your nearest and dearest.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

How to share your baby registry

Once your list is ready, sharing it is simple – and it doesn’t need to feel awkward. Many parents pop their registry link into a group chat, email, or include it on a baby shower invitation. You can also ask a close friend or family member to share it for you, especially if you'd rather not send it yourself.

The goal is to make things easier for the people who want to treat you – and having a clear, well-organised list helps them choose something meaningful without the guesswork.

So, if you're waiting for the arrival of your little one with bated breath, why not pass the time and cut down on the buying stress by setting up a baby registry? For all the inspiration and help, head over to MyCrib.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

Read more:

Best thermometers for babies and children in 2025

Best travel cots 2025

Best first pedal bikes

Ashley James joins MAM’s #RightToSoothe campaign as research shows 63% of parents feel judged for using dummies.

Parenting can feel like a minefield of judgement, and now new research reveals that using a dummy is one of the latest sources of scrutiny.

A study by baby brand MAM found that 63% of parents have been judged for their decision to use a soother, with over a quarter admitting they removed it due to external pressure.

Soothers, also known as dummies, remain a divisive topic.

While many parents use them to comfort their babies—whether regularly (42%), as a sleep aid (69%), or as a last resort (38%)—judgement still surrounds their use.

The study, which surveyed 1,000 British parents, found that 36% of criticism comes from strangers, 30% from other parents, and 20% from friends.

Even partners (14%) and the parents’ own families (18%) contribute to the pressure, leaving some feeling scrutinised in their personal choices.

This ‘soother shame’ is having a real impact. Over a quarter (27%) of parents said they actively avoid socialising to escape judgement, while others admitted they feel self-conscious in public when their baby has a dummy.

‘You are not alone’ – Ashley James supports parents’ choices

TV presenter and mum-of-two Ashley James has joined MAM’s #RightToSoothe campaign, encouraging parents to stand firm in their choices.

She urges parents not to give in to pressure: "If you're feeling isolated or criticised, know that you are not alone—there is support, and you are doing an incredible job."

One of the key concerns parents face is misinformation about soothers. Nearly a quarter (23%) admitted they had taken away a dummy due to fears about dental issues.

However, MAM's leading consultant midwife, Zoe Watson, reassures parents:

Through the #RightToSoothe campaign, MAM hopes to educate parents and the public on the benefits of soothers and create a more supportive environment.

For many parents, dummies are a vital tool in comforting their little ones—and no parent should feel judged for making the best choice for their baby.

Read more:

Best dummies and soothers for babies

Norovirus cases still rising: what pregnant women and parents need to know

TUI launches sensory rooms to make family holidays more inclusive

Viral hack actually help babies sleep

Whether it’s a first-time experience or your child has already been through it with a younger sibling, the arrival of a new baby can bring big emotions.

According to parenting expert Jo Frost, preparation is key. “If both you and your partner are organised and in control, your child will feel a lot happier, calmer, and more secure,” she advises. By making small changes in advance—such as adjusting sleeping arrangements or encouraging independence with tasks like feeding—parents can help their child feel more settled when the baby arrives.

How to tell your child you’re having a baby

If Peppa’s reaction is anything to go by, toddlers don’t always grasp the idea of pregnancy straight away.

Young children may repeat phrases like “there’s a baby in mummy’s tummy” without fully understanding what that means.

Jo Frost suggests introducing the idea early and involving your child in the process.

Rather than one big announcement, drip-feeding information in small, age-appropriate chunks can help little ones process the change.

Handling tricky questions

In The Big Announcement, Peppa asks the inevitable: “How did the baby get in there?” Mummy Pig awkwardly nudges Daddy Pig, who swiftly changes the subject by offering cake.

It’s a relatable moment for parents, but it highlights how natural curiosity about pregnancy can catch us off guard.

The key is to keep explanations simple. As Frost advises, “Small children need straightforward information that’s easy for them to digest.”

If your child is older and asking more detailed questions, you can gently introduce the idea that babies grow from a tiny seed inside mummy’s tummy and need lots of time to get ready before they’re born. Books about new siblings can also help explain the process in a way that feels fun and engaging.

Preparing for big emotions

A new baby can bring excitement, but also jealousy, confusion, and uncertainty. Peppa’s next chapter will explore her feelings about becoming a big sister again – something that many older siblings will relate to.

Frost suggests helping your child build a connection with the baby before birth. “When your bump gets really big, talk to your child about the baby inside and let them rub cream into your tummy and feel the baby kick,” she says. This can help create excitement and positive feelings.

So, how can parents help children adjust?

Involve them in the journey – Let them feel the baby kicking, help set up the nursery, or choose a toy for the baby.

Acknowledge their feelings – It’s okay if they feel unsure or even upset. Reassure them that they’re still just as important.

Maintain routines – With so much change ahead, keeping their daily life stable can help them feel secure.

Make it playful – Role-playing with dolls, reading stories about siblings, or drawing family pictures can help toddlers express emotions they might not have words for yet.

What Peppa Pig’s new storyline teaches us

Peppa Pig isn’t the first children’s show to tackle pregnancy. Bluey recently introduced Aunt Brandy’s pregnancy, hinting at past struggles with infertility, while Peppa Pig itself has previously shown Mummy Rabbit giving birth. But Mummy Pig’s pregnancy is a major moment – it’s not just a side character’s journey; it’s happening to Peppa’s own family.

By weaving the realities of pregnancy into a beloved series, Peppa Pig is giving parents an easy way to start conversations and help children navigate their own feelings about new siblings. Whether your child is excited, nervous, or completely uninterested for now, they’ll likely see a bit of themselves in Peppa’s journey.

As for the biggest question – will Peppa’s new sibling be a boy or a girl? We’ll have to wait and see. Until then, if your toddler asks how babies are made, you might want to have some cake ready – just like Daddy Pig.

Read more:

134 easy last-minute World Book Day costume ideas for 2025

The best bedtime stories for kids in 2025

Firstborn and only children more likely to face anxiety and depression, study finds

What do you do if your child asks questions about difficult news topics? Here's some expert advice on how to broach tough subjects in a suitable way for children of all ages.

The world can be a scary place and it's not always possible to shield young people from distressing stories in the news.

War, violence, death, terrorism, natural disasters... they're not exactly the sort of topics of conversation you want to be discussing around the dinner table with your kids.

Sadly though, distressing news is a fact of life and with more access than ever to media on a whole host of platforms, it's practically impossible to stop your child from hearing scary news.

Whether your toddler overhears a conversation you're having about a sad news story with another parent or picks up on something on the radio in the car or your teenager comes across a frightening news article on TikTok, Instagram or a website, it's important to know how to help them process what they've seen or heard.

Every parent will have a different approach - some might want to completely gloss over the bad stuff and make childhood a happy, safe space for as long as possible. Other parents might take the opposite approach and try to educate their children as early as possible.

To find out what's right for a child at each age of their development, we asked the experts for their top tips for speaking to your child about what's on the news.

Create a safe space

"When discussing frightening news stories with kids, it's important to start the conversation from a place of security, so the child feels safe and heard," says Dr. Huriye Atilgan, Neuroscientist and Founder of TAK Index.

"You should avoid including any unnecessary details that might make your child feel anxious and instead focus on reassuring them by highlighting the many good aspects of the world."

“In the wake of traumatic events, children may feel confused, scared or anxious," says Alex Gray, Service Head at Childline. "It’s important that parents and carers are able to offer them reassurance, comfort and kindness – be patient with them and let them know that they aren’t alone.

"It can sometimes be difficult for parents or carers to know what to say to a child, so it is important they know that Childline is a safe space. Through Childline young people can talk through their thoughts and feelings with a professional who is there to listen."

Be honest with them

"I recommend being as honest as possible with them while emphasizing the safety measures in place to ease their fears," says Dr. Atilgan. "Begin by asking open-ended questions to gauge what they already know and how they feel about the situation.

"This helps you correct any misinformation and tailor your approach to their specific concerns."

Cormac Nolan, head of Childline Online agrees: "Having an open conversation with your child, finding out what they already know and talking to them about the news in an age appropriate way is the main piece of advice we’d give when it comes to helping a young person understand distressing news."

Be an active listener

"To help children process and comprehend distressing news, I suggest becoming an active listener," says Dr. Atilgan. "By paying attention to their emotional state, you can validate their feelings and provide context to help them understand the situation.

"I find that visual storytelling aids make it easier for young children to grasp complex topics, so you might want to draw them a picture or do a little puppet show to simplify the situation for them.

"For older children, it may be beneficial to break down the information into manageable pieces, offering reassurance throughout the conversation. Encourage them to express their thoughts and fears, and be prepared to revisit the topic later as they process the information."

"Your child might say they aren't worried," says Cormac, "but you might notice them becoming withdrawn, irritable, or talking and behaving in a way that is out of character. If you think that your child is concerned, a gentle check-in can be helpful."

Use age-appropriate language

When explaining challenging news to kids, it helps to use age-appropriate language that your child will understand.

As Dr. Atilgan explains; "You can avoid boring or overwhelming them by tailoring the discussion to suit their cognitive abilities. Sometimes analogies work better than the actual thing, so try to make your examples as relatable as possible.

"For instance, you might compare a difficult situation to something they've experienced in their own lives, which can make the concept more understandable and less frightening.

"Encouraging them to ask questions and being patient in your responses can also help them feel more in control and comforted during these discussions.

"Finally, it’s crucial to emphasise that it's okay to feel upset or scared and that they can always come to you to talk about their feelings."

"No matter how old your child is, if you are concerned they are worried about something they’ve seen in the news we’d recommend you speak to them so you can explore their concerns and reassure them you are here to support them," says Cormac.

"Ensure you use age-appropriate language and the level of detail you decide to share will also be influenced by the age of your child. It can help to begin by checking in and seeing what they already know before you have that conversation."

Avoid information overload

"Encourage children to take a break from the news," says Cormac. "Seeing the same news and information all the time can feel overwhelming. Turn off notifications and let them do something they enjoy can help them take their mind off what’s happening.

"Remind them not everything they find online will be accurate and it’s not always easy to spot fake news. Let them know news outlets they can trust.

"Finally, encourage them to do something positive. This could be supporting a friend, sharing something good online, or anything else that helps other people. This can help them cope and feel more in control."

Make use of specialist resources

You don't have to go it alone when it comes to explaining scary news to your kids. There are plenty of resources out there and experts who will know exactly what your child needs in each specific situation.

"We’d encourage parents to let their children know there are lots of resources on Childline that can support them," says Cormac. "This includes the Childline calm zone which has a number of activities and tools to help children who are feeling overwhelmed and anxious, including breathing techniques, yoga videos and games."

“Our trained experts at Childline are here 24 hours a day if a child or young person wishes to speak to someone in a confidential and supportive manner," says Alex. "We are available on 0800 11 11 and also online via webchat, which you can access here: www.childline.co.uk.
