1. Stokke YOYO3, £399

The launch of the original YOYO revolutionised the lightweight pushchair industry and the 3rd iteration of the popular stroller is still as nimble, lightweight, compact and travel-friendly as its predecessors. The newest version has enhanced suspension, double the storage basket capacity (10kg!), reflective wheels, an added ventilation window and an improved buckle on the harness.

What has remained in this version is the tricky fold mechanism. Out of all the buggies on our list it has the most compact fold (and can even fold with the newborn pack attached), but it's probably the trickiest to fold down and definitely requires a little practice. Once folded however, it is cabin-approved and folds up into a very small, neat and lightpackage.

Lightweight pushchairs usually have a reputation for being flimsy and tricky to manouvre, but reviewer Daisy found the YOYO3 a dream to push: "The wheels offer a smooth ride, and I don’t feel like I need to be monitoring the pavement to steer around any potential bumps in the road (literally), as the pram can easily handle them. It’s also easier to steer and manoeuvre than larger prams I’ve tried, meaning you can zip through crowds or around tight corners confidently. We took it around busy markets and cramped shops and never had any problems."

The YOYO3 also has the option to add all kinds of accessories, from a roll-along bag (£75) to a buggy board (£110). And if you want to use it from birth, you can add on the newborn pack (£195), which resembles a cocoon and fastens over the flattened seat base.

2. Silver Cross Clic 2, £295

Silver Cross has been a mainstay in the lightweight buggy market for years with its umbrella-folding Pop stroller (£195), but the latest version of the iconic Clic, is a much more innovative and modern alternative. It's 1kg lighter than the Pop, has a much smaller fold and the new Clic 2 is loaded with practical features to make day-to-day use, or travel with your child easier.

A real standout feature of the Clic 2 is its fold. The one-second folding mechanism is activated with the click (hence the name) of a button and folds down incredibly compactly. Plus, it's freestanding and there's a shoulder strap included for easy transportation. You can even pack it in the included travel bag for extra protection if travelling.

This isn't the sturdiest buggy on the list, and it does struggle with more difficult terrains. On smooth ground it's a breeze to push and MFM reviewer Lucy said she often pushed it one-handed: "the pushchair moves so easily and feels light as a feather... On smooth terrain it glides without hardly touching it. For a travel buggy, the suspension felt very good. It performs well on tarmac or even short grass but struggles on gravel tracks and cobbles." Understandably, this is definitely a buggy suited to city streets or for travelling.

The buggy is suitable from birth thanks to its lie-flat ergonomic seat, but it is parent-facing only, with no option to add a carrycot or infant car seat. Some parents may not feel comfortable using it from birth, and we think this buggy really comes into its own when used with toddlers or older babies.

The Joolz Aer2 is the latest version of the iconic Aer+, an impressive lightweight buggy that's known for its sleek look, folding carrycot, a quick, intuitive fold and wealth of excellent features. The newest iteration has all of these traits and more. Its lie-flat ergonomic seat is suitable from birth (or you can add on a carrycot for £229 or infant car seat with adaptors for £44.95) it's cabin-approved when folded and impressively, it has an extremely generous warranty.

Not only is the pushchair frame strong, durable built to last, but if you register your Aer+ online within 6 months of purchase, you will receive a 10 year transferrable warranty, meaning that if you sell or pass on your stroller when you've finished using it, the warranty can be passed on to its new user.

The Aer2 really is built for everyday use, it's a dream to push and very easy to manoeuvre through city streets and on public transport, and even trickier terrain too. MFM reviewer Ellen said, "I was able to steer it one-handed on busy streets and up and down kerbs. It is a breeze to get on and off buses, and the four-wheel suspension ensures the rider does so in comfort. I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly it rolled over grass during trips to the park. Even the sand strewn paths in the playground posed no problem for this stroller."

With one of the highest RRPs on our list, it is certainly a premium option but if you have the budget, then its features and durability make the price worth it. According to MFM reviewer Ellen: "the Joolz Aer2’s strength is its longevity and versatility — it is suitable for newborn babies through to four-year-olds — so if you’re looking for a compact buggy that you will use every day, as well as when travelling, then it is certainly a great choice."

4. Cybex Libelle, £289.95

One of the lightest strollers on our list, the Cybex Libelle is is also one of the smallest when folded, at 32cm x 20cm x 48cm. It won a Red Dot product design award for its compact construction, and is tiny enough to store in a plane’s overhead compartment or in the footwell of a car. The secret is in a clever design that sees the wheels fold inward once the frame is collapsed. "In 3 simple movements, it is the size of a large backpack," marvelled parent tester Pooja, mum of a 3 year old, after putting it to the test. MFM reviewer Sarah, who tested this with her 10-month-old son said, "I feel it is worth the price for the compact fold alone – compared to your average foldaway, it is so tiny." You can see it being folded by the MFM team here.

Having unfolded the buggy using just one hand, Pooja was impressed that it doesn't comprise on quality or stability – there’s even front-wheel suspension. "On hilly grass, it handled it a lot better than I expected. It moves and turns smoothly and doesn’t bounce up and down much, making it comfortable and relaxing for my baby." On the downside, the right-angled dual handlebars can make single-handed pushing tricky.

With decent padding, an "infinite" recline and adjustable leg rest, the Libelle is comfortable for babies and toddlers from 6 months and it's definitely designed with older babies and portability in mind, as Cybex describes it as their "ultimate travel stroller." However, it can also be used as a travel system using car seat adaptors (£44.95) too.

5. Graco Myavo, £130

– Best budget buy lightweight buggy

In the struggle to find a low-cost lightweight pushchair that still performs well without being too flimsy, enter the Graco Myavo. At 5.8kg it's the lightest pushchair on our list, at £130 it's less than half the price of many pushchairs on our list, and at H52.5cm x W65.3cm x 32.5cm when folded, it's quite compact too. Alongside this is a good UPF 50+ hood, a bumper bar, a rain cover, a calf rest and an incredibly generous basket, especially for a small and lightweight buggy.

It has a quick and intuitive fold too which our testers loved. MFM reviewer Steph, who tested the Myavo with her 1 year old and 3 year old said, "I loved its intuitive, quick and easy one-handed fold. What really stood out to me was how effortlessly I could do this one-handed, even while holding my baby in my other arm. I was genuinely surprised by how smooth and user-friendly the mechanism was." Steph also loved the manoeuvrability of the stroller and was impressed by how smooth it felt to push, despite its lightweight frame: "pushing the stroller is effortless. It feels as sturdy and smooth as a larger, more premium pushchair, despite being compact and lightweight. The steering is extremely smooth, and compared to other strollers I’ve used, including Maxi-Cosi and Silver Cross, this one is noticeably better in terms of handling and manoeuvrability."

It can be used from birth thanks to its full, lie-flat recline, but there isn't a parent-facing option, so you may feel more comfortable using this once your baby passes the 6-month mark.

It is, understandably, missing some features found on more expensive strollers, such as mesh panels and padded shoulder straps, but the stroller still offers incredible value for money and is a great option if you're looking for a lightweight day-to-day stroller on a budget, especially for an older toddler.

6. Baby Jogger City Tour 2, £284

– Best lightweight buggy for toddlers

If you have a child who's high on the height percentiles, the sleek oval design of this buggy includes a low footrest and long adjustable calf support that's great for longer legs. MFM reviewer Helen, who tested this with her 7 month old and 3 and a half year old said, "I appreciated the adjustable calf support, not always a feature of lightweight pushchairs, which really helped make both children look and feel more comfortable."

This slimline buggy impressed our parent testers with its superior ability to fit through narrow spaces and be pushed and steered one-handed down shopping aisles, busy pavements and public transport. They also praised how comfy the buggy was for their riders. “As the buggy was so lightweight I was surprised how padded the fabric was,” commented parent tester Carolynne, mum of a 4-month-old. For young babies, the seat reclines to a near-flat position but a carrycot or car seat can be added above the seat too. Like the Didofy Aster 2, the fabric remains on the seat when you add these items, which does look a bit odd but doesn't affect performance or practicality.

Other key features include a one-hand folding mechanism and one-piece fold — you can find out how to fold the Baby Jogger City Tour 2 buggy here — as well as the storage bag with long straps. And while it won’t quite fold down to cabin-luggage dimensions, it does fold very flat (19cm deep) so is ideal if you need to keep it in a car boot or a narrow hallway or cupboard.

The UV 50+ canopy has an extension panel and mesh panel to allow you to keep an eye on your child. MFM reviewer Helen said her baby slept well in the pushchair and the hood "helped to keep him in cosy darkness," but some home testers reported that the back panel flaps about in the wind.

A lightweight pushchair can be a game-changer in a busy city, especially if you're out and about using public transport a lot. So having a reliable, nippy and compact pushchair option is a must if you're an urban dweller or take a lot of family city trips. It's in this environment that the Cybex Orfeo really shines, it's ultra-compact when folded and unfolded, has an integrated carry strap for easy transportation, and according to MFM reviewer Allie, who tested the Orfeo with her 5-month-old son (pictured above) its chassis is "strong and durable and doesn't scratch easily", meaning it can survive scrapes in a bustling environment.

Despite its light frame, it pushes beautifully and provides a comfortable ride for children too. MFM reviewer Allie said, "I was surprised by how easy it is to push the Cybex Orfeo. I’m used to pushing the YOYO 2 around, which is a notoriously bumpy ride for little ones, but the Orfeo glides fairly quietly over a variety of surfaces."

8. Joie Signature Tourist, £175

If you're looking for a lightweight stroller with good travel system functionality, we love the fact that the Tourist quickly adapts to hold Joie's ever-popular infant carriers or the brand's Ramble carrycot (£150). Unlike some others on this list, the seat fabric can be removed before doing this so the resulting look is a little more sleek and has a lot in common with a larger newborn pram.

The Tourist is suitable from birth as the seat unit is designed to lie flat, but MFM reviewer Jen, who tested it with her 6-month-old son and 3-year-old daughter, said "there is still a slight angle" and recommended the carrycot as a more secure option for children under 6 months. "Niftily combining a carrycot, infant carrier and forward facing seat option 'all in one sweet ride', it’s a clever combination if you’re looking for something flexible and stylish without a hefty price tag," she added.

As part of Joie's Signature range, a curated collection of premium products, the Signature Tourist is clad in luxe fabrics in 2 tones that make the stroller look smart ("a more premium feel than the £200 price point might suggest," said MFM reviewer Jen) and feel soft and cosy for your baby or toddler. It also boasts clever magnetic buckles that make securing wriggling toddlers that bit easier, plus an adjustable calf support for a comfortable ride.

Users love the the hands-free magic fold – press the button while pressing down the handlebar and watch as the buggy tucks itself into a neat, freestanding package ready to be carried using the integrated strap or stowed out of the way. Despite the "tourist' name it doesn't quite fold small enough to be used as hand luggage, but it's still neat and tidy for travel.

The water repellent and SPF 50+ canopy will see off brief showers and overhead sun but some parent users reported it doesn’t reach down far enough to fully protect from the sun in some positions, so you may wish to consider an additional parasol or safe buggy cover.

9. Maxi-Cosi Lara 2, £189.99

In order to keep lightweight buggies as streamlined as possible, one thing that you often have to compromise on is storage. A light frame just can't accommodate a big basket. However, Maxi-Cosi has come up with a really innovative solution with its Lara 2 buggy: it's added a second basket directly underneath the seat. It's not huge, but it's perfect for keeping items like your wallet and phone within reach, and even provides a secure spot for valuables while your baby naps – when the seat is reclined it reduces access.

Along with those storage options, this buggy also packs in other great features like a bumper bar, carry strap, and double wheels for more manoeuvrability on varied terrains (as with the GB Pockit+, this doesn't mean a smooth ride over very tough terrains, just that it'll tackle slightly uneven surfaces with a little more grace). All this and it still comes in at only 6.4kg.

The fold is a one-touch magic fold, and it collapses to an admirably small size that Maxi-Cosi claims meets cabin baggage for some airlines (do check before you fly as it's a little deeper than some others on this list).

This pushchair also has the benefit of being compatible with Maxi-Cosi's range of infant carriers, although there isn't a carrycot option. The seat is suitable from birth if you don't mind it being world-facing.

What to consider before you buy a lightweight buggy:

Age suitability – Many manufacturers advertise their strollers as suitable from birth as they have lie-flat seats. However, some seats marketed as such do not actually lie completely flat, and you may feel they’re not suitable for your newborn or little baby. It's always best to check to see exactly how flat the seat unit is and how much head support is on offer if you’d like to use it from birth. A compatible carrycot or bassinet may be needed to provide the ideal lie-flat position for young babies.

Parent-facing or world-facing seat positions – While many larger pushchair seats can be adjusted to face towards you or out towards the world, lightweights are traditionally limited to world-facing only. Think about what’s important to you and your child: toddlers often prefer to face outwards to see what’s going on in the world around them anyway.

Terrain suitability – By nature of the design, lightweight buggies tend to come with small wheels which are better suited to pavements, flat paths and urban areas, although most can handle grass and footpaths without any issues. If you need something that can deal with heavier terrains and bumpy ground, you may want to consider an all-terrain pushchair.

Sun and rain covers – You’ll probably need a hood/sun canopy to shade your baby against the sun but on lightweight strollers these can be flimsy or not reach far enough to protect from morning or afternoon sun. Look for extendable canopies with built-in SPF, or keep room in your budget for an additional sun shade, cover or parasol. Also check if a rain cover is provided as many of the hoods on lightweight buggies won't protect from showers.

Recline – Some lightweights have seats that can recline in multiple positions, which is useful for the times when your baby or toddler has fallen asleep and you want them to lie as flat as possible. Look at how this is controlled, on many lightweights it's a simple pull cord and buckle, rather than a click mechanism.

Adjustable calf support or footrest – This will give your toddler’s legs something to rest on, but not all strollers have them.

Shopping basket/storage –Strollers generally have much smaller baskets than their larger pushchair counterparts so do take a look at the dimensions if you need to store items in your stroller. Others may have additional pockets or bags that can fasten on, which significantly add to the available storage.

Price – As with any buggy, the more you spend, the more features you can expect, but there are bargains to be had. You can get a perfectly decent lightweight buggy for under £100 but it won’t fold down to cabin-luggage size or be as durable as a buggy that costs three times that amount. Coming in at under £120, the Apino stroller from Kinderkraft represents really amazing value in this category, especially as it has some key features included that are missing on some far more expensive strollers (such as a bumper bar and one-handed magic fold). That said, it is missing a rain cover – a must in UK weather – and it isn't the smoothest ride of all the compact folds we tried. It's also heavier than most other models on this list. However, at this price, we definitely think it still stands out.

"The overall design is very sleek and compact, yet it’s functional. The stroller has very nice details, such as leathery handlebar and bumper bar, padded seat / backrest, smooth wheels and a large canopy with a small window," says parent tester Hannah, who tested this with her 5 month old. If you're looking for a cheap day-to-day runaround that folds up super small and is super-light, you can't go far wrong with Graco's great value Myavo stroller. At a third of the price of some of the very high-end models in this list, it still packs in plenty of great features, including a good-sized UPF 50+ hood, solid wheels, a bumper bar, a calf rest, and a decently-sized basket, especially for a compact stroller.

Although the buggy doesn't have a specific newborn cocoon or pod, it can be used from birth due to its full recline, although it doesn't have a parent-facing option and it's probably more useful from around the 6 month mark.

Parent tester Carol, who tested this with her 6 month old said, "the stroller folds down with one hand, one click and stands on its own within seconds. Storing it once folded is really easy as its quite compact, which is quite handy if using public transport, restaurants and you needed to fold the stroller down to make space. I would definitely recommend it as a travel stroller particularly in city areas. I also think for older babies and toddlers this would be a really good everyday stroller."

MFM reviewer Cher tested the Butterfly with her 2-year-old son (pictured) and 6-month-old daughter and told us how comfortable her children found the pushchair, especially her toddler: "the seat unit has a padded insert which is super comfortable and in the words of my 2-year old son, is “very cosy”. He liked the leg rest, which can be adjusted and set to 5 different positions, but it can also be folded away if preferred. There seems to be a fair amount of growing room for him and I definitely think it will last another year or so before he outgrows it."

Cher was also glowing in her praise of how compact the Butterfly is, saying "it is so compact, it takes up hardly any room in my car boot, and it self-stands too so can easily be taken on buses or trains. It also has a shoulder strap which makes it a breeze to lift and carry handsfree."

It has a basket that will hold up to 8kg, was described by Cher as "one of the easiest strollers to fold" and is incredibly sturdy despite its light weight and compact design.

The Cybex Libelle has one of the most eye-catching compact folds in our round-up: it doesn't just fold down, but in too (find out how to fold it in our video), making a neat, flat package that's smaller than most hand luggage allowances. It's a two-handed fold, but it's easy to operate and ideal for travel.

The compromise you pay for that tiny fold is a pushchair that's slightly less versatile than some other models. It doesn’t come with a carrycot option and the recline doesn’t go near-flat, but it is compatible with Cybex’s range of infant car seats, so you can use it from birth as a travel system if you’re not planning to be on the go for too long at a time. The sun hood doesn’t provide as much coverage as some other models on the list, but this pushchair definitely wins on weight and portability. MFM reviewer Sarah (pictured) also added, "The seat unit is surprisingly large and roomy."

The YOYO was one of the first truly compact folding pushchairs of this type and is still popular with parents far and wide, having set the bar in the sector. Now in its 3rd iteration, the Stokke YOYO3 retains the compactness of the original and still stands out thanks to its ease of use, clever details and overall super functionality. Plus, not only is it a great everyday pushchair, it's approved to go in the cabin by a number of major airlines.

As well as two newborn options (the newborn pack (£195) or the shell (£245)) it is very easy to use the bespoke ride-on board for older kids (£110), and you can get a roll-along bag to store an extra 10kg (£75). There's even the YOYO Connect seat (£325) that turns it into a tandem double pushchair. This means it gives owners far more options for expansion than simpler compact buggies. In fact, many parents have ditched their primary prams for a YOYO-only approach.

MFM reviewer Daisy, who tested the YOYO3 with her two-month-old son, said that the YOYO3 really does stand up as an everyday pushchair: "while expensive, the Stokke YOYO³ pushchair and 0+ newborn pack more than holds its own as an everyday pushchair for parents who want to get out and about with their new baby, which I think justifies the price tag. If you're looking for the luxury touches and robustness expected from an iCandy pushchair, but don't have the space for a pushchair with a pretty large footprint, then meet their new compact stroller: the Pip.

The Pip has so many features that iCandy's pushchairs are known for, including plush and soft fabrics, great suspension and a stylish finish, but in a very compact package (folded, it's just H 44cm x W 24cm x L 56cm which makes it cabin-approved for most airlines). Despite this compact fold, it has a tall and wide seat with a generous 25kg weight limit, so could last your child up until they're around 5 years of age. MFM reviewer Steph said, "my daughter settled straight in; she seemed happy sitting on the padded liner and the seat is generously spacious... I found the pram was perfect for naps on the go, reclining deeply to create a comfortable place to sleep for my daughter. The seat is lie-flat so can even be used from newborn age. The footrest can also be adjusted to give your baby extra room as they grow."

Also, despite it's compact size and light weight, the Pip has exceptional manoeuvrability, especially if you're primarily using it on city streets. It's not going to replace an all-terrain buggy or tackle any muddy off-road trails with ease, but MFM reviewer Steph told us, "the Pip stroller zipped along pavements, and was nimble going up and down kerbs, and onto buses and trains. Easily manoeuvrable, it steers well even one-handed and made smooth work of cobbles, uneven pavement and station platforms. Any city dweller knows that getting around sometimes requires speed and fast reactions, but this agile pram was well up to the task, cutting through crowds easily."

With the Pip, you're not only getting a premium pushchair that's durable and sturdy enough for everyday use, it also provides an extremely comfortable ride for your baby or toddler and comes with some great extras including a bumper bar, multi-position footrest, carry bag and rain cover.

Ergobaby's entry to the compact fold pushchair market addresses a number of the issues people have with some very stripped-back lightweight strollers: there's a generous basket, decent-sized wheels, plenty of padding, a good seat recline, and – perhaps most importantly – an adjustable handlebar. For very tall or short caregivers, this could mean a far more comfortable push.

It also has a clever in-built newborn "nest" that makes it more comfortable for babies under the age of 6 months: the calf rest folds up and fastens in place to create a comfy, flat sleeping space for your newborn.

Those added features do make the pushchair slightly heavier overall, at 7.8kg (vs an average of around 6kg). However, the fold is still very compact and those features do really add to the comfort and convenience of the stroller. MFM reviewer Bianca, who tested this with her 6 month old, said, "My baby seemed extremely comfortable and secure thanks to the ergonomic padding and robust safety straps. I believe it will last my baby well into her toddler years as there’s plenty of room for her to grow into."

Parent tester Connie said, "The Ergobaby Metro+ stroller is extremely simple to use. It is not a one hand open but is still very simple and quick to open and fold back down which is very beneficial for me. it is lightweight and easy to carry (with the bonus of the carry handle on the seat cushion) and folds up very small, so could even fit in the smallest of cars." If you're familiar with UPPAbaby's larger prams like the Cruz and Vista, you'll know the brand is known for its huge shopping baskets, and that popular feature has been replicated – albeit on a smaller scale – in the brand's travel-friendly stroller, the Minu — with a basket that can carry up to an incredibly impressive 11.3kg. It also offers a solid build at a compact size, with a lightweight frame that still feels built to last. As MFM reviewer Steph, who tested the pushchair with her 6-month-old daughter, explains, "unlike other city pushchairs I’ve used, where lightness often comes with a flimsy quality, the MINU V3 felt completely sturdy. "

When folded, it also has a convenient shoulder strap "which made carrying it much easier than I anticipated," continued Steph. "It was surprisingly light at 7.5kg and, thanks to the padded handle, I could hang it on my shoulder comfortably while holding my nappy bag and baby." The MINU V3 is also IATA compatible, meaning it's cabin-approved which also makes it a great travel stroller option.

Thanks to its lie-flat seat, it can be used from birth but is forward facing only. However, you can purchase adaptors to add a car seat. The pushchair really will grow with your child too. The seat unit is incredibly roomy with a height of 52.1cm and has an adjustable 3-position footrest so can be used comfortably until your child hits the 22kg weight limit.

If you're looking to buy only one pushchair/travel system from birth but still want something with a relatively small fold size, the Bugaboo Dragonfly could be your perfect match. This replaces the much-loved Bugaboo Bee as the brand's flagship city pushchair, and it boasts some great features, namely a collapsible carrycot that folds while on the frame, and a huge 10kg storage basket.

Although it lacks the tiny fold of a buggy designed for air travel, it folds tall and flat, making it great for narrow hallways and staircases. If you're looking for a does-it-all pushchair that takes up minimal space, this could be the one for you but do note, this is not a traditional compact fold stroller – it's a full pram/travel system.

The extra inches and kilograms on this frame does mean it can offer many things more lightweight buggies can't, including a reversible seat, superior suspension and loads of storage space.

MFM reviewer India was impressed with how it feels to push, saying, "The Dragonfly’s built in suspension ensures comfort and a smoother ride for both parents and babies." She did, however, find the folding carrycot tricky to get used to, and this is something we've found in our testing too. Once you get the knack it's easy as you can see in our video below, but it does take some practice at first.

What should I look for or consider when buying a compact-fold pushchair?

Frequency of use – Some strollers are super-light and the perfect solution for travel, but might feel a bit too lightweight for everyday use. Others are more substantial as they combine a comparatively compact fold with all the versatility of a full-sized travel system and are designed for everyday use with a newborn. Identifying what your priority is will make choosing much easier.

Age suitability – A lot of compact folding pushchairs are designed for older babies and toddlers who can sit up, but an increasing number are suitable from birth, either offering a lie-flat seat or the option to buy an additional carrycot. Some may also be travel system compatible, meaning you can attach an infant car seat. In order to keep the frame light, it may be that a carrycot or car seat attaches on top of the seat fabric. This is perfectly safe and functional, but it can look a bit odd.

Seat recline – Some compact folding pushchairs only have a small recline. This may be fine for some toddlers, but it's not suitable for younger babies. It's also worth noting that pushchairs can be categorised as lie-flat even if they’re not completely flat – they can still lie at 150° angle rather than a flat 180°. We’d strongly recommend that if you’re using this as your main buggy from birth, that you ensure you choose one that lies completely flat or comes with a carrycot.

Adjustability – Many compact strollers don’t offer that much in terms of adjustability – no extendable handlebar, a seat can’t be parent-facing, it can’t lie flat, and so on. These features add weight and bulk, which is why they're often the first to go. If you value a degree of adjustability, you might want to go for a model that is slightly less compact, but we've also found models in this list that offer those extra features while still being travel-friendly.

Fold type – Not all folding mechanisms are created equal, and just because a pushchair has a compact fold, that doesn’t mean it’s a smooth, fuss-free folding process. Some are truly one-handed with the push of a button. Others require a bit more involvement, two hands, or a few steps to fold it down, but they may fold down much smaller as a result making them more suitable for travel, particularly by plane.

Comfort – Often, when a design focuses so much on minimising size, comfort features, such as soft padding or extendable hoods to ward off harsh sunshine, can be neglected. The compact buggy category spans a huge range from purely functional with minimal comfort features, to rather luxurious models. If you’re planning to use the buggy as your everyday mode of transport, this might become a crucial factor in decision-making.

Storage – If you find yourself relying on your buggy to do all the heavy lifting – shopping, changing bag, sports kit, snacks – then choosing a compact buggy might be tricky. There are many that don’t offer much in terms of storage, some don’t even allow you to store your handbag. So, basket size – and access to that basket – can become a top priority.

Accessories – Since their compact, and often lightweight, design means they have a more stripped-back feel, many of these models come with the option to purchase additional accessories like footmuffs, cup holders, shopping bags, parasols and so on. Some don't even have a rain cover included as standard, so do look out for this when calculating overall cost: what was a bargain may be less of one when you work out how many added extras you'll need.

Price – Although these buggies are small, light and streamlined, all the technology to get them so compact means they often come at a cost. The majority of buggies in our list are around the £200-£400 mark, but a more comprehensive option suitable from birth could set you back over £1,000.

The Urban Glide 3 has a lockable swivel front wheel, integrated twist hand brake and reflective features on the canopy and wheels which helps visibility and safety if jogging or pushing the buggy in low light conditions. Plus, the ergonomic handlebar is adjustable, the basket size is extremely generous and it has an easy, one-handed fold.

Although relatively compact for a jogging buggy, the stroller is still quite large and heavy when its folded — so you will have to consider where you'll be storing the buggy, especially if it's not going to be used as your main, everyday pushchair.

When running, the buggy does what it says on the tin — it really glides — thanks to its large, 16'' rear wheels and excellent suspension.

As expected from a CYBEX pushchair, their jogging stroller — the Avi Spin — is an extremely stylish, high performance option that is perfect if you have an active lifestyle and want a jogging buggy that will support you and your family.

The front swivel wheel can be locked for extra stability whilst jogging or for navigating tricky terrain whilst the suspension and air-filled tyres offer great stability according to MFM reviewer Harriet, who tested the pushchair with her 11-month-old son: "It felt safe, smooth and unmatched on rougher terrain. We tested on grass, gravel, and woodland areas and the suspension took the edge off bigger bumps, the tyres gripped well, and the buggy stayed steady."

Other welcome features include an extra large canopy that offers great sun coverage, quick wheel release, a one-pull harness and an adjustable handle with a deceleration brake. There are also reflective rings and stitches throughout the pushchair to increase visibility in low light conditions.

Its sleek design makes it perfect for city living and weekend park runs alike, although do bear in mind that it's still a jogging buggy and its wide footprint won't be the easiest to navigate on small pathways or public transport. However, it does have a relatively compact fold (for a jogging stroller) according to reviewer Harriet, but it's not free-standing and may still take up quite a lot of room in your car boot.

As you can see from the entrants on this list, jogging strollers tend not to come cheap. Finding a good quality pushchair that's suitable for jogging and won't cost over £500 can be a very tricky task, but step forward the Ickle Bubba Venus Prime Jogger stroller. Its price point in no way limits the performance of the stroller. Thanks to its strong and robust chassis, large air-filled tyres with reflective trims, a self-locking front wheel and wrist strap, this buggy is a dream to handle — whether you're pushing it over bumpy terrain or running with it through the park.

Included in the great value price is also a newborn cocoon, so if you're looking for an all-terrain option to use from birth that you can eventually run with once your baby is old enough, this is a really fantastic option. MFM reviewer Alice (pictured above), loved the versatility of the pushchair, and said "it is a nimble, lightweight, versatile stroller that can be used for exercise and for everyday local walks, making it a good choice for active parents who don't want to compromise on comfort, quality or price."

Jogging strollers don't tend to fold down compactly, due to their strong frames and large wheels, but the Venus Jogger surprised us with its compact folded size.

The fold is easy to do and once folded, MFM reviewer Alice said, "If you're using the newborn cocoon this must be removed first, meaning it is essentially folded in two parts. Despite this, I found it easy to store at home when not in use. The Venus can be further reduced in size for storing if the bumper bar is removed (an easy task) and stored in the seat of the buggy. Likewise, you can remove the larger side wheels, which are easy to take off. With three kids, space in the car is a premium so we need a buggy that folds easily and to a relatively small size. I could easily pop the Venus in the boot of my car (an Audi Q3) without removing the bar or wheels."

If you regularly run in woodland, or even anywhere with a lot of bumpy surfaces, then the UPPAbaby Ridge is an ideal pick for your running buggy. Is clever design and well-thought-out features make handling tricky terrain a breeze, even while running. Plus, your child will enjoy the ride thanks to the deep, tall and comfortable seat.

Parent tester Aisling, who tested the Ridge with her 15 month old son (pictured above) told us "the seat is very well padded and the harness is very secure. My little one seemed very content in the seat. He normally hates going over really rough terrain but I didn’t hear a peep out of him while traversing the bumps when heading into the forest across large rocks and fallen branches."

The buggy has a swivel-locking front wheel, reflective accents, a disc hand brake system, adjustable handlebar with wrist strap and a patented two-stage suspension system — all of which make this a comfortable and smooth ride whilst running. Plus, it even has an included water bottle holder on the handlebar — a very welcome feature! It also has very generous storage which includes a zipped pocket on the pushchair's hood and a large, covered basket. Christy, former head of Consumer Content at MadeForMums, tested the Ridge with her 21 month old on bumpy woodland and long grass said, "while most pushchair baskets are open, I love the fact this is covered so nothing is going to fly out when you go over bumpy ground."

The ease of using the buggy over tough terrain is really where its shines. Parent tester Christy told us, "the large wheels and good suspension meant I felt confident putting the Ridge through its paces on rougher ground, and it coped well, even when going over large tree roots on a slope. It’s really easy to fix the front wheel by pressing 1 button, which gives it more stability over bumps."

The large wheels that allow the buggy to tackle this terrain do mean that storing the pushchair can be tricky — particularly when its folded in a car boot. Although the fold is easy and it folds neatly in one piece, you may need to click the wheels off to be able to store it once it's folded.

The seat unit is world-facing only and is suitable for babies from 6 months old, however it is compatible with an UPPAbaby carrycot (£249.95), or you can buy car seat adaptors and attach a compatible infant carrier if you want to use the stroller before baby is old enough to jog with.

Now in its 5th generation, the Nipper Sport from outdoor brand Out'n'About is another staple of the jogging buggy world. Its large, 16'' air-filled tyres and advanced suspension make it a breeze to push while running and over tricky terrain. The front wheel is fixed and there is a handlebar brake too.

Unlike many jogging buggies, this pushchair can be used from birth thanks to its lie-flat seat, car seat adaptors or additional Nipper Pod (£75). Although you shouldn't jog with your baby in the pushchair until they're at least 6 months old, this flexibility is very welcome, especially if you're looking to start using the pushchair earlier. Although it might not be the easiest pushchair to push around your local shops, the Nipper Sport does have quite a lightweight frame — at 9.8kg it's one of the lightest jogging pushchairs on the market — and a relatively compact fold too, so can be a welcome companion to everyday life as well as your jogging adventures. We also love that a bumper bar, seat liner and rain cover is included in the price.

Double buggies that you can run with are rare to find, so we love that this option from Out'n'About not only exists, but is a really great quality option. This dedicated double running buggy has all the features that the single version has, such as an adjustable handlebar, multi-position reclining seats, 16'' pneumatic tyres, fixed front wheel and handlebar brake.

At 11.5kg, it's also relatively lightweight for a double buggy — and an all-terrain one at that – and can fold down to a quite compact 70cm x 36cm x 90cm if you remove the wheels.

The Baby Jogger Summit X3 is the perfect do-it-all buggy for active families who like to jog but don't have the space for a larger, dedicated running buggy. Travel system compatible and with an incredibly easy, one-handed fold, the Summit X3 behaves just like a normal buggy until you take it off road or start running.

And when you do start running, the quality really shines through. MFM reviewer Becky was a huge fan of the buggy's suspension: "the Baby Jogger Summit X3’s all-wheel suspension made a huge difference to my experience as a runner, and a parent, because it enabled me to push myself with fitness while I was pushing the baby, smoothly. I particularly liked that the rear wheels were set widely apart so there was no risk of kicking them when I was running."

The buggy offers an incredibly smooth ride for little passengers too, even on rough terrain, as Becky found: "Running on bumpy terrains might be more challenging for parents, but it appeared to create an equally smooth ride for my son because the suspension in the wheels reduced any impact."

What is a jogging buggy?

Quite simply, a jogging buggy is a pushchair that you can run with. Most everyday strollers and pushchairs aren't suitable for running because they don't have adequate suspension, or robust enough tyres to roll over rough terrain at speed.

What features does a jogging buggy have?

Jogging buggies typically have three wheels — two larger 14in or 16in wheels at the back and one smaller wheel at the front. The front wheel is usually able to be fixed so that it only goes in one direction — this is to make it easier to push the buggy at speed and over potentially rougher terrain. Other features jogging strollers tend to have include a 5-point harness to keep your child secure, a hand-operated break and a wrist loop. Also look out for a good rain cover — this is essential if you're braving the elements while you run. When is it safe to start running with a stroller?

Your baby should be at least six months old before running with them in a pushchair. Some experts actually suggest waiting until they are 8 or 9 months. But the real standout feature for our MFM reviewer and testers was its super simple fold – you just pull on the 2 separate loops located on the seat. One of our testers did note that the seat fabric is left exposed on the outside once folded which "could easily get muddy/worn when in storage/being taken in and out of the car boot." However, this is where the freestanding fold comes in handy, making it easier to keep clean and store.

For a pushchair that suits both city and country life, Bugaboo’s popular Fox 5 has impressive all-terrain features including smooth suspension, a robust chassis and large puncture-proof wheels. Plus, there's some great parent-friendly features as well, such a generous 10kg basket, a one-handed fold and a one-handed adjustable handlebar.

MFM Reviewer Alex (pictured above) tested the Fox 5 with her 8-week-old son and 2-year-old daughter and thought the buggy was a joy to push, saying "it feels very light to push with both the baby and toddler inside." She was also impressed by how well the Fox 5 handled on difficult different terrain: "on pavements, wooden decking and roads, it glides along, and I didn't have a problem going through water or muddy/boggier areas. Uneven ground including tree roots and stones were, of course, less smooth, but my baby didn't complain. Going up an down kerbs is a dream."

The Fox 5 is definitely one of the pricier all-terrain buggy options on our list, but the carrycot comes included in the price, which reviewer Alex really rated: "it feels very spacious... my eight-week-old baby was content inside and slept happily in it on walks out an about," making this a great all-terrain buggy for a newborn. The carrycot is also suitable for overnight sleeping when used with the additional Bugaboo carrycot stand (£174.90 at Bugaboo). Once your baby has outgrown the bassinet, it then easily converts into a toddler seat, which is a brilliant concept that saves on money and space. The seat unit can both world and parent face and impressively grows with your child, with its highest setting being 59cm from floor to seat.

We also like that you can adapt the fold depending on your storage space. The most compact fold comes from removing the seat and storing it in 2 pieces (however, it can be quite tricky to fold this way). You can also fold it with the seat (and even carrycot) attached and leave it free-standing. Alex said that when folded, "the buggy doesn't take up much space, picking it up is very straightforward and we found it fitted easily inside our car boot."

Out 'n' About has a well-established reputation when it comes to all-terrain pushchairs and the latest version of their Nipper pushchair is a worthy addition to the range. There’s no denying that the Nipper is ideal for long walks over multiple terrains and it's a great option if you're looking for a multi-purpose pushchair that can also handle going off-road and jogging. MFM Reviewer Miranda, who tested the Nipper v5 with her 2-month-old baby, said "this buggy would be good for any parent who lives in the countryside or who has to deal with many different terrains. The seamless movement and sheer manoeuvrability of the Nipper V5 make it a real joy to take out, particularly over muddy or rough terrain"

The seat is world-facing only and does recline flat so can be used from birth, but you can also attach a carrycot (£185 at Out'n'About) or car seat. Miranda said her baby "seemed very happy in the carrycot", but did suggest that the Nipper "would be ideal for a slightly older baby who could sit front-facing and for a family who would be able to make use of the jogging functionality."

The seat itself is spacious and padded with an improved 5-point harness so your baby or toddler should remain comfortable and secure as you navigate off-road. There's also a reasonably-sized removable shopping basket, zip pockets in the hood and a pouch on the rear of the seat unit which is great for keeping essentials to hand.

The Thule Urban Glide 3 is a sleek option in the all-terrain market, especially if you're looking for an option you can run with. There's an ergonomic, adjustable handle, the front swivel wheel can be locked to provide greater control over rougher terrain, it has large 16'' air-filled rear wheels, great suspension and an integrated twist handbrake. Plus reflective rims on the wheels and canopy are useful if you're out and about in dark or low light conditions.

MFM reviewer Sophie, who tested the Urban Glide 3 with her 3-month-old baby (pictured above), was glowing in her praise of the buggy when she put its terrain-tackling capabilities to the test: "You will struggle to find contenders out there that will rival the smooth push of the Thule Urban Glide 3 pushchair. On pavements and indoors, it pushes like butter. You can steer it on a sixpence with just one finger — no exaggeration. On rougher terrain, the 16-inch rear wheels come into play and drive the pushchair over rocks, tree roots and uneven grass with ease. The option to lock the front single wheel also meant that there was never anywhere that we couldn’t go."

If you're looking for an all-terrain option that will still be useful day-to-day, the Urban Glide 2 has some great features that help it go from hills to the high street — the standout one being its storage. As Sophie said, "the covered basket is the unsung hero of the Urban Glide 3. The basket size is much larger than other all-terrain pushchairs and with the ability to hold 7kg, it rivals many other multi-purpose travel systems too. We also loved the smaller zip pocket on the back of the basket and used it for keys and phone whilst we were out and about."

If you're looking for a reliable all-terrain pushchair that's robust, comfortable for babies and toddlers and is genuinely easy to manoeuvre over tricky terrain, but are looking for a more affordable option — there aren't many better choices than the Hauck Runner 2.

With an RRP of less than £200, this buggy still offers an incredibly smooth ride thanks to its large pneumatic wheels. MFM reviewer Shauni, who tested the pushchair with her 13 month old and 5 year old, said, "this is one of the best pushchairs I’ve pushed and steered on multiple terrains. It’s so light to push and so easy to steer, you can even do so one-handed! It effortlessly glides over kerbs, rocks and roots, although on our more heavy off-road walks I did get the front wheel stuck in between a root before lifting the front wheel over it. It’s very easy to push through mud too, although the tyres do seem to like to cling to sticky mud."

Shauni found the seat unit "large and roomy" and said both her children felt comfortable, even her "5 year old (20kgs) comfortably fit in it too, which reassured me that it will be a long-lasting pushchair."

The buggy also has an adjustable handlebar, a very spacious basket (that does have mesh sides so do watch out for mud and water seeping in!) and a great, weather-resistant hood with a reflective trim. Considering its bulky size, it also folds relatively compactly for an all-terrain pushchair, but when folded it is understandably heavy and awkward to lift.

There are relatively few wagons on the UK market right now, but they do appeal to many parents, especially those who need to regularly transport multiple young children or spend a lot of time on days out at theme parks or the beach. The WonderFold W4 Luxe is definitely at the premium end of the wagon market, but you certainly get a lot for your money and it's definitely worth considering investing if it will be useful for your family lifestyle.

The wagon holder up to 4 children (with a combined weight limit of 133kgs) and has removable, raised seats. It's comfortable for kids too, MFM reviewer Victoria tested the wagon with her 3 children told us, "my children (and a couple of their friends who hitched a lift on occasion) absolutely LOVED it. The seats were comfortable and even reclined, and the 5-point harness is padded. The harnesses were a little fiddly to use, but once in and fastened my children were all comfortable and secure."

Due to the heavy and large nature of the wagon, it can be difficult to store and fold, as reviewer Victoria found: "I struggled to fold the wagon by myself. It's quite large and a bit difficult to have your arms across both sides of the body of the wagon to lift the latches while pulling it up to fold it together. It is obviously a fairly big and bulky piece of equipment so you would need a suitable place to store it."

Inspired by the Scandinavian lifestyle, the Noordi Fjordi focuses on keeping children comfortable in all types of weather. Parent tester Rachel, who tested the pushchair with her 4 month old, found that all parts of the travel system worked seamlessly with each other and said that "each attachment feels built to last and all connect together really well."

When you are walking over bumpy trails and footpaths, an important consideration for an all-terrain pushchair is the quality of the suspension – especially if your baby is sleeping! The Fjordi doesn't disappoint. It boasts adjustable four-wheel suspension and puncture-proof gel wheels. MFM Reviewer Sadia, who tested the travel system with her 5 month old (pictured above) and 3 year old said that it "was a joy to push around. It handles beautifully, can be steered easily with one hand and veered between pavement and indoor shop floors without so much as a bump, navigating cracked pavements and tree roots rising through paving slabs with ease."

Our testers were also impressed with the buggy's ergonomic features, such as the height-adjustable handle. Parent tester Verity, who tested the travel system with her baby and toddler added, "well made, gorgeous to push and stacked with clever features, the Noordi offers a comfortable place for both my baby and my toddler and it’s held up in good condition on our many (many) lockdown walks!"

Although not a traditional all-terrain pushchair, iCandy's Core pushchair has a range of features that make it a worthy contender if you're looking for a pushchair to use on multiple types of terrains such as woodland walks or strolls on the high street.

One of the standout features of the Core, and what makes it a great all-terrain option, is the multi-mode wheelbase. The pushchair comes with two sets of wheels: a 'rural' set which is a longer, more substantial wheelbase for handling tricky terrain and an 'urban' set which is shorter and lighter, transforming the Core into more of a lightweight, compact stroller. MFM Reviewer Tara, who tested the pushchair with her 5 month old (pictured) and 3 year old, says "it's simple to adjust the chassis from country to city mode and swap to the smaller wheels."

The rural wheelbase, whilst offering larger wheels that, according to Tara "perform really well on the open forest, grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles," understandably doesn't handle as well on rougher ground as some of the other options on our list with larger wheels. However, if you're looking for a compact or lightweight pushchair that you can transform to take on woodland or forest walks, the Core quite efficiently ticks both boxes.

There's also a host of other impressive features such as an adjustable handlebar, integrated toddler ride-on board, spacious basket with drainage hole, large padded seat unit as well as the game-changing LED Visibility lights located on each side of the buggy. The lights are easy to use, rechargeable and really help to improve visibility if you're out walking in dark or low light conditions.

If you're looking for a lightweight, easy to push double buggy then the Nipper V5 Double from Out 'n' About might be the pick for you. Building off of the already fantastic single version of the Nipper V5 we included above, the Double version is durable, offers excellent suspension and is good to look at to boot.

"This updated version of Out 'n' About’s rugged, outdoorsy double buggy handles tricky terrain with ease," noted MFMs reviewers Maria and Alice. "Kerbs are no match for the pneumatic tyres and, despite the buggy’s size, the wide, height-adjustable handle makes one-handed steering a breeze."

The real drawback with here is the surprising lack of storage. Compared with the other all-terrain strollers, the basket is definitely on the smaller side.

That being said, the fact that this is fairly lightweight is remarkable. As Alice pointed out, "Considering its size and that it holds 2 children, the Out 'n' About Nipper V5 Double is incredibly lightweight, at just 12.8kg. It can hold up to 22kg per seat and I used it with my 15kg toddler and 5kg baby and never broke sweat."

Overall, if you're a parent to twins and you want to get out and about more often, then the Nipper V5 Double is a fantastic option.

If you're looking for a buggy you can use everyday but can also handle rougher ground on all-terrain walks, the Roma Atlas is a great option. As well as great features such as an easy-to-use and responsive brake pedal, adjustable handlebar, a generously-sized sturdy basket and a large, extendable 50+ UV hood, it also copes really well on tricky terrain.

Parent tester Rebecca thought that the standout quality of the Roma Atlas was how well it performs as an off-road buggy, saying "it moves smoothly and easily, turning corners nimbly and goes up and down hills without working up too much of a sweat. It glides over pavements, leaps over grass and tackles cobbles and woodland paths happily." Parent tester Kayleigh, who also tested the Atlas agreed that it is "an absolute breeze" to push on pavements even one-handed. She continued, "the stroller tackled mud, grass, gravel, woodland and rocky pathways in the park all without any difficulty in steering."

The large, puncture proof tyres are robust and durable, plus you can easily lock the front wheel to help tackle tricker terrains. However, Rebecca noted that they are very wide: "they stick out well beyond the width of the handlebar and chassis. This size might cause struggled down narrow paths or tracks and it would not fit through the back door from my garden without removing the rear wheels." The wheels, however, are easy to remove and the pushchair is relatively compact when folded, as parent tester Kayleigh said, "it fits into the boot of our small Skoda Fabia with only one rear wheel needing to be removed (which is easily done)."

What to consider when buying an all-terrain pushchair

• Wheel size – The general principle is the larger the wheel, the better it will handle rough terrain. Many regular pushchairs have two larger wheels at the back and two smaller ones at the front. All-terrains with large wheels both front and back will give you and your baby the easiest ride and lightest push even over very rough terrain.
• Tyre type – Air-filled tyres give the smoothest of rides on the bumpiest of grounds, so if you’re looking for a really tough all-terrain or a buggy you can jog with, these are a great option. However, they are prone to punctures and you’ll need to carry a repair kit. Increasingly, we’re seeing all-terrain pushchairs designed with foam- or gel-filled tyres, which handle rough terrain very well but can add weight.
• Suspension – Good suspension will also help to make off-road pushing easier and the journey more comfortable for your baby. Some all-terrains feature adjustable or heavy-duty suspension and shock absorbers.
• Number of wheels – A 4-wheel pushchair offers stability and often a bigger shopping basket, as they don’t narrow at the front. However, 3-wheel models tend to be easier to manoeuvre over rough ground (particularly lumps and bumps, such as high kerbs and tree roots) due to the single steer at the front.
• Weight and size – All-terrain pushchairs tend to be quite heavy and bulky compared to standard pushchairs. Think about how often you’re going to be lifting your pushchair when folded (e.g. loading it into a car boot or carrying up stairs). Often, 3-wheelers have large back wheels, which can make the pushchair quite wide. While you can also use an all-terrain pushchair for walking around town, it is worth noting that the width of some models can make it difficult to navigate the smaller spaces and aisles inside shops.
• Accessories – The joys of UK weather mean that we can encounter rain all year round. If you’re out on long walks a rain cover will be essential, so check if this is included in the price or if you have to buy it separately, along with other accessories such as a footmuff for winter or a cup holder.
• Fabric – Are the fabrics waterproof? If you plan to take your pushchair off-road, then you will certainly have to factor in getting it muddy and damp, especially with 3-wheelers being closer to the ground, so check if the fabric is water and mud resistant.

Do I need to buy an all-terrain pushchair?

• Yes – If you regularly encounter bumpy terrain, especially if you live in a rural area, a standard pushchair or pram might not have the features to help you tackle this with ease. For example, regular pushchairs that have small wheels at the front can quickly get clogged up with grass, sticks and mud that may prevent the wheels from turning.
• Probably not – If you’re looking for a buggy that will be able to handle occasional country walks and regular trips to the park. A regular pushchair is likely to be able to handle these kinds of terrains, as long as it has reasonable-sized rear wheels. The only buggies that really struggle with very rough terrain are strollers with small front and rear wheels and little suspension.

Are all-terrain pushchairs suitable from birth?

Most of the pushchairs on our list are suitable from birth, either with a separate carrycot or a lie-flat seat. However, according to standards that assess whether a pushchair is suitable from birth, "lie-flat" only has to be 150°, not 180°.

Given the scientific evidence behind keeping your newborn baby lying flat in a pushchair, we recommend that if you’re using this pushchair on a frequent and regular basis with your newborn, you use either a carrycot or choose a model with a full 180° flat recline.
