You might decide to express so your partner can play a more active role in feeding – offering milk in a bottle and covering night feeds so you can catch up on some well-needed sleep. There are many reasons why breastfeeding can get off to a slow start and using a breast pump can really help you to manage the situation. “If a baby isn’t able to transfer sufficient milk from the breast due to prematurity, illness or oral restrictions, the team looking after you will recommend expressing your milk,” explains lactation consultant Katherine Fisher.

A breast pump helps to mimic the action of the baby at the breast and stimulate milk production. “Expressing can also make it possible to give your baby breast milk if there are anatomical reasons why you can’t feed, or if you simply elect to offer expressed milk and not breastfeed,” Katherine adds.

If you’re at all concerned about your baby's feeding, ask for advice from your health visitor or midwife – or search for a lactation consultant in your area. And remember, it is completely up to you whether you continue trying to breastfeed your baby.

This Elvie breast pump has it's own unique features – it is completely tube-free, hands-free and it’s powered by an internal battery that can be charged via a USB cable, so there’s no need for a power cord when it’s in use – and silent.

Parent tester Dominika, who tested this with their newborn, shared, "This definitely makes my life easier by enabling me to pump on the go. I can do pretty much anything around the house while pumping milk. The design and quality of the materials feels amazing. I was quite pleasantly surprised how it attached to my breast while in working mode."

This pump impresses with its simple assembly, affordable price and portability. Our parent tester Casmine, who tested this with their 2 month old, called it “A really useful pump that is extremely effective. I was worried that the suction might not be as strong as other pumps but it really was.”

The quality of this pump really shines and it includes some really welcome additions not seen on all pumps, such as a clear measuring scale nipple measuring tool and chic, high-quality storage and travel case that makes it perfect for popping in your bag, especially if you're travelling.

This was a feature that particularly impressed MFM reviewer Laura, who said "I was impressed with the high quality of the travel bag. As I will mostly be using this pump in the office at work, it's a nice touch to have a protective case to take it in."

Although it's not the most discreet electric breast pump, it's certainly been thoughtfully designed to be portable and used on-the-go, as reviewer Laura found, "This pump is great if you're returning to work but still planning to breastfeed. It's nice to have a pump that feels like it has been designed with being portable in mind. I will be working in an office, so I won't necessarily be pumping at my desk or in the middle of a meeting (it's not quite discreet enough for that), but it's great that I will be able to continue to work on my laptop while pumping. In terms of use, our testers found the electric breast pump to be very quiet and extremely effective. Reviewer Laura continued, "I initially found the pump really easy to use and very effective once in place, achieving a good collection of milk from each breast. Wearing a double pump can risk feeling cumbersome and heavy on the breasts but not so with this Medela breast pump. As well as being lightweight, they're also incredibly comfortable, MFM reviewer Jess (pictured) said "the cups were so lightweight and fit so well, that it was easy to forget I was pumping!" It's incredibly portable too as the motor unit can easily fit in your pocket.

The pump connects to a SMART app that tracks your sessions and shows when you pumped, how long you pumped for, which breast, how much milk was produced and what level setting it is on. MFM reviewer Jess was extremely impressed with how effective the pump was too: "I pumped 150ml from each breast in less than 20 minutes; so far more effective than any pump I've used before."

Even the cups have been designed to make life easy. The transparent material makes it simple to align them with your nipple and you can look and check to see if your milk is flowing. Plus, with only 3 parts, they’re a dream to clean and they’re safe to put in the dishwasher.

The MomMed wearable breast pump does what it says on the tin. A fairly priced double wearable breast pump that will give you the freedom you need to make milk on the go.

"It looms attractive in that it is modern and simple to use. I like the screen to view how long the pumping session has been although cannot clearly see a battery symbol. It is not the quietest pump particularly when using both at the same time. It is easy to empty the milk obtained particularly with minimal leakage. The suction on the pump is very strong and I have not used past level 9 (goes up to 12)" shared parent tester Chloe.

You'll be able to get about 4-6 pumping sessions on full charge which for some mums is more than enough. Each pump collects up to 180ml of milk. Additionally, the pump is simple to use and there aren't too many parts which means less washing.

Stylish and well-made, with no tubes or wires and a built-in smart touchscreen pump unit, the Lola & Lykke breast pump has been designed to support positive postnatal recovery and the health and wellbeing of new mums.

It definitely looks the part, in muted colours with an embossed leaf pattern on the flange. Although aesthetics aren’t top of the list when choosing a breast pump, it’s a nice bonus that Lola & Lykke has put some thought into making this practical item feel a bit more glamorous.

Plus, it delivers on performance, too. There are only 5 parts to this simple pump, making it easy to put together and it features 4 pumping modes ; stimulation, expression, automatic and memory.  When charged it lasts for 2 hours, and can be recharged quickly via a USB lead.

According to parent tester Anna, who tested this with their 3-month-old: “It’s quieter than any electric pump I’ve previously used. It’s powerful yet gentle and it feels more like the baby is feeding than a pump. The smart screen is fantastic for tracking battery life and remembers what settings you used previously. It has a great battery life, which is super handy.”

Our testers found this pump to be comfortable, easy to operate and easy to set up. Parent tester Clara, who tested it with her 3-month-old baby, found it to be quick, allowing her to “get cracking with expressing just minutes after getting it out of the box. There are quite a few components which might be overwhelming for a breast pump newbie but it’s definitely not difficult to work out.”  The pump allowed her to “express a good amount in a short time”.

Parent tester Ruth, who tested it with her 4 month old, said she could move easily between settings and speeds, adjusting the pump for what worked best at the time, saying: “Pumping is gentle but effective, making expressing quicker than ever; I can express enough for a feed in about 15 mins.”

A full charge gives you over 90  minutes of power to pump on the go.

"I was able to express just under 120ml from one side in 8 minutes – and it was more comfortable compared to my usual hands-free pump," revealed tester Carly, mum of a 3-month-old baby.

The flanges only come in one size, but parent tester Kristina, who tested this with their 4 month old, said, "the flanges were really, really comfortable and the silicone cups made a massive difference as I didn’t feel like there was any friction on my nipple when in express mode."

There are 9 different levels for both stimulation and expression, which are controlled by a "sleek, modern display." As a double, the pump can be set to different suction strengths on each breast and either dual or alternate pumping in 30-second cycles. Our tester Jessica, mum of a 3-month-old baby, found this variety allowed for "pumping personalisation" that led to a higher milk yield.

The motor unit is “roughly the size of a 500ml bottle, so definitely compact enough for travel“, and quiet too, while the battery can power the pump for up to 3 hours, which should get you through a day of expressing. The fact it can also be used as a manual increases your travel options too, making this a great choice if you want a powerful pump that can be used in lots of different ways.

"The compatibility with MAM bottles is a standout feature that makes the whole process of pumping and sterilising much easier," according to Hannah.

Aside from the Smart ConstantComfort technology, which mimics the natural suckling of a baby to, as the name suggests, improve the pumping experience, the companion app was also a highlight for our parent tester Rebecca.

"I found it simple to connect the pump to the app – simply hold the power button until a blue light shows and link with your phone using bluetooth," noted MFM reviewer Rebecca. "Once connected, you can adjust the settings of the pump, stop and start it, and also record pumping sessions and the amount of milk expressed in each sitting. You can also gather data and insights which can be especially useful when asked about your breastfeeding journey by health visitors, doctors etc."

Overall, this isn't the smallest and most discreet breast pump on our list but it does pack a lot of great features into an affordable, mid-budget package.

As MFM reviewer Joanna (pictured above) noted, "I loved being able to pump on the go – this was a revelation after using a heavy hospital-grade pump for the previous six months." Joanna also praised the pump for how easy it was to use, she said "the MAM Move is reasonably easy to use and the control panel is simple and straightforward."

However, Joanna did note that the pump isn't the easiest to clean and it requires a sturdy bra to hold it in place due to its weight, however the comfort and freedom to do other things while expressing makes this a great buy for busy mums. The comfort and discretion of the pump was another highlight of the pump. According to Joanna, "the MAM Move was really comfortable to wear, and when it was on quiet mode, I even forgot I was wearing it. The pump comes with a range of shield sizes and is well-moulded to fit the breast."

Comfortable, easy to put together and simple to use, the suction is created by a quick squeeze of the silicone pouch towards the breast, with a valve to ease off or release pressure – allowing you to reposition mid-feed with just a press. The pump sits in your bra and can collect up up to 120 ml of milk.

Like any silicone pump it takes some practice to position the Curve correctly but once the silicone pouch is pressed to create suction, parent tester Amber blown away by how comfortable it was to use, commenting; “wearing like this is was as comfortable as wearing nothing!” And because it’s worn inside your bra, it leaves your hands free and the lack of motor means it’s totally silent when expressing.

Use this guide to help decide which style suits you best.

Electric breast pumps are powerful, convenient choice, particularly suited to mums who need to express milk frequently. They are available as wired, battery-powered, wearable, or hospital grade breast pumps. Most feature adjustable suction settings and multiple modes to mimic your baby’s natural rhythm. While the more advanced units aren't always the most affordable breast pumps, they offer time-saving efficiency and comfort. See our detailed section on electric breast pumps above. 

Wearable breast pumps are either manual and electric and fit discreetly inside your bra to collect milk (avoiding the need for any awkward external tubes or power cords). Many double as wireless breast pumps, with an all-in-one design that integrates the motor, bottle, and shield. Because they’re hands-free and don’t require mains power, they’re ideal for multitasking at home or expressing discreetly while out and about.

Manual breast pumps typically tend to be cheaper and compact than electric, making them a practical option for occasional use or travel. Some require hand pumping via a handle, while others use natural vacuum suction to collect milk. Medical or hospital grade pumps are powerful, robust, and durable. They are best for mums with low milk supply or engorgement, but they do tend to be expensive and rented, rather than purchased. It's worth bearing in mind are some hospital-grade pumps available to buy if you're planning on expressing long term.

Electric vs manual breast pumps: what’s the difference?

Electric breast pumps

Electric breast pumps are great for those looking to express excess milk or to maintain their milk supply, particularly if you are returning to work. Electric pumps create suction using a motor powered by mains, USB cord or batteries. These powerful pumps create a rhythmic suction pattern and allow you to control suction strength and frequency, enabling you to pump larger volumes of milk in less time. They are more expensive and often noisier and bulkier than manual breast pumps, although some newer, premium pumps feature a quieter design.

Most electric breast pumps now have at least 2-phase programmes that are designed to closely mimic the way a baby feeds – light but fast sucking initially to stimulate flow, followed by slower and deeper sucks that draw out large quantities of milk – promoting greater comfort and efficiency.

There are now a number of wearable breast pumps that charge up and then slip into your bra for hands-free pumping –– making them more convenient than something with trailing wires.

They are either sold as single electric breast pumps – which allow you to express milk from one breast at a time – or doubles – which enable you to extract milk from both breasts simultaneously. While double pumping cuts expressing time in half, they are more expensive (not twice the price of but certainly more than their single counterparts).

Electric breast pumps are also good for draining breasts with blocked ducts, engorgement or mastitis or when it’s too painful to breastfeed.

Manual breast pumps

There are two types of manual breast pumps; ones that require you to pump using a handle, and ones that use vacuum suction in order to extract breast milk. The more traditional hand pump can take a fair amount of effort and time to pump a volume of milk, and it’s not always possible to adjust the level of suction, so these types of manual pumps are often more suited for occasional use. They are only available as singles because, well, you’ve only got one pair of hands and you usually need both – one to hold the breast shield in place, the other to pull the handle.

Vacuum suction pumps are newer and fit onto your breast like a suction cup. Once fitted (there is a knack to it) it will stay attached to the breast while the vacuum pressure extracts milk. These pumps often double as let-down milk collectors – meaning they collect small amounts of milk from the other breast while you're breastfeeding – making them more versatile than a hand pump.

Both kinds of manual breast pumps are cheaper, portable and tend to be more compact and weigh less than electric versions. They are usually quieter than motorised pumps and you don’t need to remember to charge a manual pump or worry about batteries. However, in general they take much longer to express milk than an electric pump.

What to consider when buying a breast pump

Type of use - There are lots of reasons you may want to express, and this is key to deciding what kind of pump will suit your needs best. Regular pumping with a double electric pump or hospital grade breast pump may help if you're trying to increase a low milk supply or deal with engorgement. On the other hand, if you just need to pump occasionally, a manual or collector pump should do the job. If you're returning to work from mat leave you may want to discreetly express at your desk, so a wearable or manual pump might suit you best.

Portability - If you don’t want to be tethered to a plug socket while you pump, look for a pump that can run off batteries or a rechargeable power pack. This will mean you can move around while pumping. Some pumps are wearable – meaning you can pop them inside your bra. They have no wires or tubes so you can even leave the house while wearing them. For traditional double and single electric pumps, there are accessories such as specially designed expressing bras or bustiers that hold the breast shields and bottles in place to give you a hands-free option. However, the wires and tubes of these pumps do still get in the way, making movement limited.

Price - Prices of breast pumps vary dramatically, with non-electric manual pumps starting at around £20 and high-tech, electric pumps that promise hands-free wireless pumping retailing up to around £250 – and up to £500 for a double. In between, a decent single electric hand-held pump will set you back around £130 to £150.

Ease of cleaning – You have enough to think about without having to worry whether your breast pump is completely clean. Germs can grow quickly in breast milk residue so you will have to clean and sterilise it after every use, and that means taking it apart and putting it back together again. The best breast  pumps come without too many fiddly parts. Some are even colour coded so you know which pieces to remove to wash. Can I use a second-hand breast pump?

Buying second-hand pumps is cheaper than brand-new pumps, but this is generally not recommended by manufacturers. This is because plastic parts can deteriorate or become defective with frequent use and over time. If it is not a closed system pump it is possible for milk to be drawn up the tubing and into the motor housing and this could increase the risk of cross infection. Have a chat with your midwife, health visitor or a breastfeeding consultant before you buy a second hand pump, and if you do, choose a brand that sells spare parts so you can replace any worn out elements.

When can you start using a breast pump?

As with so much of parenting, there are no set rules – the best time will depend on you and your baby. UNICEF recommends waiting until your baby is 6 weeks old but you may be advised to express milk sooner. Katherine advises this can be as early as day 3 if you need to stimulate milk production or provide milk for top-up feeds. And don’t worry if you’re not filling a bottle on your first day. “Don't be discouraged if you only manage to collect a few drops at first. Keep pumping 6-8 times a day and your milk levels will increase,” Katherine says. "If milk volumes are not increasing a lactation consultant will be able to assist you to find a solution low milk supply can be caused by a number of issues, most of which can be fixed with expert support".

What time of day is best to use a breast pump?

If you’re aiming to build up a store of milk, try to use a breast pump in the morning if you can. “Prolactin levels are highest for the first two feeds of your waking day so you will produce more milk at this time. If you need to pump later in the day, it helps to have a small sleep first. “A nap in the afternoon can also help to boost prolactin levels,” says Katherine.

If your aim is to increase your milk supply, Katherine advises pumping every time you feed your baby. “Expressing at the same time as you are feeding your baby means you’re extending the feed your baby may have made at the breast,“ she explains.

Whatever your reason for pumping, the best time to do it is during a feed by expressing milk from the breast your baby has already fed from. Alternatively, use the breast pump immediately after your baby has fed. ”This way, you’re saving time and you’re not compromising your next feed,” Katherine says. If you’re away from your baby for any reason, aim to use the breast pump at the time you would normally be feeding your baby.

While most other sterilisers are chunky and made from plastic, so they're quite bulky to move around, the Nuby UV steriliser is reminiscent of a travel bag or cosmetics case. It's hard-sided but lightweight and covered in a wipe-clean fabric, making it really light and easy to transport.

It is quite large at over 30cm wide, but it fits neatly on a countertop and looks quite stylish. Although it's big, you can only stack items in one layer, meaning it holds only 2 bottles at a time. This shouldn't be too much of an issue, though, given how quickly it does its job: the really impressive thing about this steriliser is it completes its cycle in only 3 minutes.

Since it uses UV light rather than steam or water, it's also mess-free. Parent tester Georgina, mum of a 6-month-old, said, "The ease and speed of this machine make it well worth the money, and there’s no need for descaling or cleaning after each cycle. It is a massive time-saver and will make your life easier."

The latest version of this steriliser claims to kill 99.9% of bacteria in as little as 5 minutes, using no chemicals or other added ingredients, with a lower power consumption compared to electric steam sterilisers. Simply pop your items inside and close the lid. MFM reviewer Amber, who tried out the previous version of the steriliser, loved how easy it was to use, saying "all of the settings are incredibly easy to use and for our family, it has been a lifesaver."

As well as sterilising, the latest version of this product also has a drying function, which ensures your bottles, dummies and other items will be free of drips and ready to use safely. The full sterilising and drying cycle takes an incredibly impressive 22 minutes.

What makes this steriliser stand out is its impressive drying function – there are 3 different drying cycles, starting at 30 minutes, and once dry, bottles will remain sterile in there for 24 hours. MFM home tester, Neve, said this was one of her favourite features: “I love the drying function! Goodbye, wet bottles. Although this seems like something trivial, it is brilliant.”

One of the first of its kind, this 4-in-1 device from Bebello is certainly an innovative product in the parenting world. This handy product not only sterilises and dries baby bottles, it washes them for you too — saving you much-needed time and energy.

It uses high-temperature water and 26 dynamic water jets to remove dried-in milk and other residue found on baby bottles or pump parts. The wash cycle takes 19 minutes, sterilisation 10 minutes, and the drying cycles either 45 or 120 minutes.

It has an easy-to-use digital display, and everything is self-explanatory, according to our parent testers. Our parent testers also praised the Bebello for its multi-functionality and, most importantly, the time it saved by no longer needing to wash and dry bottles or pump parts.

Parent tester Emily said, "I have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the extra time it has given me by not having to wash and sterilise bottles and dummies by hand. I do think that the price makes this more of a luxury item, but I do believe that if parents can afford to invest in this product, it will save so much time and make life so much easier, particularly with a newborn."

There were some minor reports of water marks on teats and sometimes wet bottles, but overall, our testers praised the Bebello for its high-quality performance. If you're a time-poor parent and can commit to the investment, then the Bebello Washer will probably be worth it for you.

This electric steam steriliser and dryer from Dr Brown's is a great option if you find yourself needing to sterilise a lot of bottles and accessories, particularly if you're a parent of multiples. It can sterilise up to 6 bottles at once — similar to the NUK Vario Express steriliser — but unlike the Nuk you can also use the included accessory tray to sterilise bottle teats, dummies, teethers and other accessories at the same time as the bottles.

It's incredibly easy to use — just turn it on, select your preferred setting (sterilise only, dry only, combo sterilise and dry) and it will get to work. A full sterilise and dry cycle takes 45 minutes, and like most sterilisers on our list, after sterilisation the items remain germ-free for 24 hours if you leave the lid on.

Despite being spacious, the steriliser isn't particularly bulky and looks sleek and modern. However, our testers did report that the power cord is on the smaller side, so you may need to take this into consideration depending on your kitchen worktop layout. The steriliser comes with 2 HEPA filters, with each one lasting up to 6 months.

Parent tester Charlotte, who tested the steriliser with her 3-month-old really rated the capacity of the steriliser, telling us "it's definitely made my life easier, being able to load 6 bottles plus lids, teats, dummies, etc. has been incredibly useful. The tray on the top is spacious. In comparison to sterilisers I've used before, loading the bottle teats and lids was a breeze.  I feel that this product would especially help parents of multiples due to the quick drying and spacious room."

This Tommee Tippee steriliser claims to kill 99.9% of bacteria in just 5 minutes – one of the shortest electric steriliser cycles we’ve found. It's simple and easy to use too — just add 80ml of water, load your contents, and then it's just a one-button start. Parent tester Nicola, who tested the steriliser with her 18-week-old baby, loved how quick and easy it was to use too: "It's easy to use and does a great job — 5 minutes for 6 bottles is good going. I like the fact that I could just put the bottles in, press go and forget about it. It's also light, compact and quiet while it's on."

It will automatically switch off once the sterilising cycle is complete, and as long as the lid is properly secured, the contents will remain sterile for 24 hours. The easy-lift handles prove incredibly helpful too, helping to keep hands free of steam. 

For a relatively compact steriliser, it has a generous amount of space — you can fit up to 6 bottles in the lower tray and then use the top tray to sterilise soothers, bottle teats, lids and other accessories. Plus, you're not limited to Tommee Tippee bottles as the steriliser has been designed to fit a wide range of other leading bottle brands and sizes, including anti-colic bottles.

However, our tester Nicola did find that it was trickier to fit MAM bottles in the steriliser, she said "you can sterilise 6 Tommee Tippee bottles, but when using MAM bottles, the most I could fit was 4 and I had to be creative to fit the teats and the bases in."

It's also impressively flexible; the steriliser comes with 6 movable bottle rods and a removable basket, so you can adapt it depending on what you need to sterilise.

It's quiet and easy to use with a one-touch power button and also has an automatic switch-off, switching itself off once sterilising is complete. Plus, the sterilised bottles will remain germ-free for up to 24 hours if you keep the lid on, similar to other models.

For an electric steriliser, it's very competitively priced and has a range of impressive features. However, unlike other similar entries on our list, such as the Babymoov Turbo Pure or Baby Brezza Steriliser Dryer Advanced, it doesn't have a drying function.

Although it's the most expensive steam steriliser on our list, this option from Baby Brezza has a host of impressive features that really make it stand out — including modular expansion, a super quick drying cycle and ample capacity.

One of the most impressive features about this steriliser is its adaptability — it has 4 different configurations that you can adjust depending on what you need to sterilise. It has a lower bin, top bin and an accessory tray that can easily be modified if you need to try and fit in particular bottle sizes or different accessory types. It's sleek, fairly compact despite its large capacity, very quiet when sterilising, but is somewhat louder when it's drying.

There's an easy-to-use LCD control panel, and you can choose from 4 functions: sterilise only, dry only, sterilise and dry or storage. It also, similarly to the Babymoov Turbo steriliser, has an extremely impressive 30-minute drying cycle. Parent tester Alice really rated how quickly the steriliser worked, saying "I've found even with the steriliser full, 30 minutes is more than enough to fully dry the contents, which is very impressive. The contents came out very dry and ready to use at the end of the cycle. I've not found a single drop of water on anything!"

Its capacity is also certainly generous; it can fit up to 8 bottles plus accessories, and also has a universal fit, meaning it works with all bottle types and brands. Parent tester Alice said, "I could fit 2 full sets of Medela swing pump sets and 2 MAM bottles with ease. The steriliser saves a lot of time as you can bulk wash, sterilise and dry in under an hour!"

It comes with 1 free HEPA filter, but do bear in mind that this will need to be replaced.

This funky-looking steriliser is an ideal option if you’re short on space and don’t want a traditional electric steriliser in your kitchen. Even though it’s so compact, it can still fit up to 6 bottles inside, plus teats and lids, and items are sterilised in the microwave in as little as 5 minutes.

It also gives you the choice of using it as a cold water steriliser if you don’t have access to a microwave.

With its handy latches, the lid is easy to open and close, and it doubles up as a drainer for sterilised items too. Leave the lid on, and as with other models, the contents remain sterilised for up to 24 hours. Parent tester Gemma, who tested this with their 3-month-old, loved how easy it was to use the steriliser: "The steriliser is so simple and easy to use. The quality is fab too, I've found it to be stronger than other brands."

MFM reviewer Sarah was also a big fan and called it a "practical, space-saving, easy-to-use, no-leak steriliser." She added, "It’s a big plus that it can cope with different brands of bottles, breast pumps and other baby feeding accessories." However, she also added that "even after the stipulated cooling time, I still found the steriliser was hot to touch, so it was a bit tricky to get out of the microwave."

This fast-acting portable steriliser uses ultraviolet light technology to kill almost all germs in just 59 seconds. If your baby drops their dummy often, then you may be glad you packed this in your changing bag.

It’s powered by a USB cable or battery, and it impressively provides over 100 uses on a full charge. The UV light shuts off automatically when the lid is opened, and the transparent base allows you to see the UV light working when it's powered on.

Whilst it’s designed to be a dummy steriliser (or for other small items such as nipple shields or bottle teats), you can also use it to sterilise anything that fits inside. Bear in mind that if you are bottle feeding, then you will need another, larger machine to sterilise your daily bottles. This affordable device works well as an add-on, but it won’t replace your main steriliser.

Cold water sterilisation is very much a traditional method, and Milton has been in the business of sterilising baby products for over 70 years. If you want a tried and trusted method, this Milton steriliser ticks all the boxes.

To use, simply fill with water, add Milton fluid or Milton tablets, then place all the items you want to sterilise in the unit with the weighted grid on top. It takes 15 minutes for the items to clean (which is longer than all the other sterilisers mentioned here), and utensils can be used straight away.

Parent tester Rebecca, who tested this with her 12-week-old baby, described the Milton steriliser as "a very effective method of sterilising all baby feeding items, teethers and toys. I also loved that you could just keep adding items to sterilise within the 24-hour window!"

With a large 5-litre capacity, you can fit up to six standard bottles as well as breast pumps, soothers, teethers, toys and more. Other useful features include a lockable lid and a carry handle.

MFM reviewer Sarah did notice a chlorinated smell that "takes some getting used to", but found it to be a "fast and effective method of sterilising that won’t break the bank and is a cinch to use."

12. Milton Solo Travel Steriliser, £11

Another entry from trusted brand Milton is their simple and convenient travel steriliser, which proves to be a useful, reliable backup for when you're travelling or away from home with your baby and need a portable bottle steriliser. At £11, it's also one of the most affordable options on the market, but can understandably only accommodate one bottle at a time.

You can either use it as a cold water steriliser (similar to the entry above) or you can put it in the microwave. If using the cold water method, you just simply need to place the bottle in the steriliser, add one quarter of a Milton tablet, fill with water, screw the lid on and press the safety vent and then shake gently. Within 15 minutes, everything will be ready to use.

If opting to use the microwave method, your sterilised bottle can be ready to use in as little as 5 minutes — faster than many traditional steam sterilisers and very handy when you're on the go or using it for middle-of-the-night feeds. Just add water, place your items in, screw on the lid and press the safety vent down and then pop it in the microwave (remember to allow it to cool for around 3 minutes once it's ready). It's also been cleverly designed to fit all microwaves due to its lay-flat flip. If it's too tall to stand up in the microwave, just lay it down.

Like many of the other sterilisers on our list, your sterilised bottle also remains germ-free for 24 hours as long as you keep the lid closed. It's 100% watertight too, so you can leave it in your changing bag until you're ready to use it without fear of water leaking.

Portable, reusable and easy to use, these bags will sterilise bottles, pumps, teats and all other feeding utensils in just 3 minutes in the microwave. You’ll get 5 bags in a pack, each of which can be reused 20 times.

Why do you need to use a steriliser?

Warm milk can be a breeding ground for germs and harmful bacteria, especially when it's left sitting in bottles. Young babies have immature immune systems, making them more vulnerable when it comes to illnesses such as gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting.

As advised by the NHS, all babies’ milk-feeding products need to be sterilised until they are 12 months old.

Your steriliser will quickly become a vital, hard-working part of your baby’s kit during the first year. While bottles still need to be washed after use, sterilising them is what kills any remaining milk bacteria and helps to protect your baby from any tummy upsets.

What are the different types of sterilisers you can buy in the UK?

There are 3 types of sterilisers to choose from – steam sterilisers (electric or microwave) and cold water sterilisers are most common, whereas newer models now use UV light as well.

Steam sterilisers, as the name suggests, use high-temperature steam to clean and rid your bottles of bacteria. The two main options are:

• Electric sterilisers: plug into the mains and use an electric plate to heat water in the steriliser and form steam
• Microwave sterilisers: work by adding cold water to a sealed unit and then heating.

Cold water sterilisers is the traditional method that uses an antibacterial fluid or dissolving tablet along with cold water to clean bottles, dummies and expressing equipment. This system is particularly handy if you’re travelling or as a back-up, although some people don’t like the smell of the fluid.

UV sterilisers is the latest method of sterilisation on the market, and use ultraviolet light. As it doesn't use water or steam, you can use a UV steriliser to sterilise toys, books and even mobile phones. Although they are often more expensive to buy, UV sterilisers don’t use chemicals or need descaling like steam sterilisers do, and they have lower power consumption than other electric sterilisers.

What to consider when buying a steriliser

What to consider when looking for the steriliser that fits your needs...

• Where will you use it? – Will you be at home with mains electricity all the time? Some sterilisers can also be used with a microwave ­– do you have one and how big is it?
• Space – Is there room for a larger unit that can sterilise several bottles (standard and/or wide-necked) at once, or is a more compact device that takes up less space going to work better for you?  Do you plan to use it past the bottle-feeding stage for feeding bowls and training cups when weaning?
• Convenience – Do you want a cycle that completes quickly, or one that you can run overnight?
• Accessories – Do you want a bundle that also comes with bottles? Some sterilisers on our list with a drying function also come with a HEPA filter (air purifier filter) which will need changing – are there extra filters included in the price?
• Sterilising method – Steam, UV and cold water methods have all made our list of best baby sterilisers. They all have pros and cons when it comes to speed, maintenance and what you can sterilise, so it's worth weighing up which one will suit your family best.
• Portability – If you travel often, it's worth choosing a portable, compact steriliser that's easy to take with you.
• Maintenance – Steam sterilisers will need regularly descaling so it continues to work properly so it's worth factoring this in.
• Running costs – Electric and UV models use power, but for cold water sterilisers you'll need to buy tablets or fluid, which can add up over time.

Just in case you forget (not likely, we know), before sterilising always:

• Clean the feeding bottle and teat in hot, soapy water as soon as possible after a feed, using a clean bottle brush (only use this brush for cleaning bottles).
• Rinse all your equipment in clean, cold running water before sterilising.

The material is durable and easy to clean and it folds neatly with a convenient carrying strap.

MFM home tester Elisa, mum of 5 year old boy said, "we use the Munchkin portable one with the pouch in the bottom to store bits in because we could use that when we went out too and he was always comfy in it". It's made from a slightly squishy but very strong foam-like material that feels comfy for the child and wipes clean easily in case of spills, it also won't scratch your furniture.

MadeForMums writer Gemma tested the seat with her 2-year-old son and said, "Now he's older and tall enough, we've got rid of the high chair completely and just use the Bumbo booster seat. He seems really comfortable and will sit in it for play and craft time as well as meals. He's even learned to climb up onto it himself."

However it's worth noting that it may not be the best travel highchair for older toddlers and pre-schoolers. Amanda had concerns about the recommended age range and said of her 2-year-old daughter, "the straps didn't fit round her shoulders properly, like she had already out grown the seat."

We asked Dr. Harvey Karp, a paediatrician and child development expert who promotes children's rights to a healthy and safe environment, if he has any safety advice for using a travel highchair or booster seat. This is what he advises:

"Whether your child is in a regular highchair or a travel highchair, it needs to be sturdy, so they can't easily tip over. So when you're securing a travel highchair to a kitchen chair, that chair needs to be sturdy too.

"Whenever your kid is in their travel highchair, always utilise the child safety straps, including the crotch strap. Never forget to secure the safety straps that attach the booster to the chair it's sitting on. Before placing your child in the travel highchair, double, triple, quadruple check that the seat is fastened securely to your kitchen chair. You shouldn't see any movement in the booster highchair when properly fastened.

"Don't place your travel highchair near the counter or the table. Just one hard push against these surfaces can tip the chair right over.

"Never leave your child alone in a highchair, travel highchair or not.

"If you're considering using a travel highchair that hooks onto a table, they may not work well with round, thinner or lightweight tables. The table must be heavy enough to support your child's weight without tipping over and make sure it securely locks to the table. Once attached properly, there should be zero movement and your child's feel should not be able to reach the table support where they could push against it and dislodge the seat.

"Be very diligent about checking the age and weight limits before placing your child in a travel highchair".

Can you put a booster seat on a folding chair?

Dr Karp advises that you "don't place your child's travel highchair on a folding chair. It's simply too unstable and risky."

When can I use a booster seat instead of a highchair?

"If it has a 5-point harness, it's likely safe for babies who are old enough to sit upright in a regular highchair. But again it's very important to check the age and weight requirements before using," advises Dr. Karp.

All the booster seats included in this list are not suitable until at least 6 months. If your baby cannot sit upright by themselves they should not be using a booster seat.

What types of travel highchair or booster seats are available

• Travel highchairs – A bit like the seat part of a highchair, minus the long legs. They sit on top of a dining chair and are strapped on. They can be folded to a compact size for portability.
• Booster seat – Much like a travel highchair, it straps onto a dining chair. You can get either foldable or unfoldable booster seats. They're designed to give your child a boost in height so they can reach the table, while safety harnessed in.
• Clamp-on seats – A seat that attaches to the table’s edge, rather than the chair.
• Fabric seat harnesses – A piece of fabric you put around your baby with clip restraints that fasten at the back of a chair. They're easy to fold, but don't give your baby any additional height to help them reach the table.

What to consider when buying a travel highchair in the UK

• Age suitability – Travel highchairs and booster seats tend to not be suitable until 6 months and some backless ones may only be suitable for older toddlers. Make sure that the one you choose is age appropriate for your baby or toddler.
• Maximum weight – Much like age suitability, consider whether the travel highchair can hold the weight of your toddler. Also, if you want it to last a long time, think in advance – if your toddler is already nearly the maximum weight it might be a good idea to choose a different one which offers greater longevity of use.
• How long will your baby or toddler be sitting in it? – You need to think about how long your child will be sitting in the travel highchair. If it's a long time then comfort is key and you may need one that has padding or some kind of cushioning.
• How you will have to carry it around – As it's a portable highchair you'll naturally be carrying it around with you, so bear this in mind when choosing which one works best for you. You may have to squeeze it into your bag, in which case a fabric seat harness would be a good shout. Alternatively, look for a seat that fits in your buggy basket. • Do you want up-to-the-table feeding? – If you want up-to-the-table feeding, a clamp-on seat ensures your child is table height, making it easy to join in at mealtimes. When choosing the right travel highchair or booster seat, remember that for up-to-the-table feeding it's a good idea to have a removable tray – that way the tray doesn't get in the way of the table.
• Do you need height? – If you want to give your child some height, consider how much is needed. Booster seats are a great option for boosting your child that little bit higher. However, as previously mentioned, if you want to ensure they're table height, a clamp-on seat is your best bet.
• Where are you going to use it? – Do you plan on using the travel highchair when eating out at various places? If so, you need a flexible one that's suitable for different chairs and tables. If you're after a chair or booster to take to the grandparents' for overnight stays, you can opt for something a little bulkier that won't need to be carried around too much.
• How easy is it to clean? – As with any highchair or booster, you're going to want to pick a design that's easy to clean. Look for plastic and foam chairs that are easy to wipe down quickly, as well as fabric styles and covers that can be thrown in the washing machine.
• How easy is it to assemble? – Is it easy to assemble or attach one-handed, while holding your child? Be mindful that some models are fiddly, so it's worth testing if possible.
• Chair compatibility - not all travel highchairs fit securely on every type of chair. For example, wider chairs or those with a curved back may not work with a fabric seat harness, and folding chairs might not be suitable for clamp-on seats.
• Price - If it's just for use occasionally, a budget-friendly travel highchair or booster seat will be fine, but if you know you'll be having regular holidays and outings, a m0re durable and multi-functional one, could be worth the extra investment.
