They can knock on their doors, not only meeting the townsfolk and uncovering hidden secrets but also getting some sweet treats from Haribo and Maoam.

Enchanted Hollow is an optional extra and needs to be booked in advance.

This year they're also launching a new scare zone called Stone Watchers: Vampire's Lair, a new experience that's a bit on the spookier side. This is in addition to fun shows like Spelltacular and Rising Flame: Shadows of the Tomb and, of course, a fancy dress costume contest!

What are the dates for Chessington’s Halloween event?

Howl'o'ween runs across the October weekends and throughout the school half-term. Here are the dates:

4th – 5th October

11th – 12th October

18th October – 2nd November

What are Chessington’s opening times during Halloween?

Chessington is open from 10am to 5pm throughout Howl'o'ween, giving your little ones the chance to experience rides at dusk.

Is Chessington’s Halloween event family-friendly?

Howl'o'ween is billed as for "families of all ages," so it's definitely family-friendly.

In our Chessington review, we said that the ideal age would be between 6 and 13 if you're interested in going on the rides. But, the good thing is Howl'o'ween has more than just rollercoasters, it also has exciting shows, a cast of characters (who range from friendly to frightening depending on the area of the park) and plenty of activities for small children.

However, that doesn't mean there won't be some scares. For those in the "Brave Adventurers" category, the bigger rides will also be open late, alongside the new scare zone, Stone Watchers.

What is the scariest ride at Chessington?

Dragon's Fury, Mandril Mayhem or the Vampire Ride tend to be thought of as the scariest rides at Chessington.

Dragon's Fury has a ton of twists and turns, dips and dives, meanwhile, the Vampire ride flings you around over the tree-tops at speeds of 45 mph, while your legs are dangling down. The Jumanji themed Mandril Mayhem is one of the newest rides at the park and the first to include an inversion.

Dragon's Fury and Mandril Mayhem have a height restriction of 1.2m while the Vampire has a 1.1m height restriction.

How much do Chessington Halloween tickets cost?

Tickets start at £34 when you buy online in advance and £64 if you walk up on the day.

These standard entry tickets get you one day access to the Theme Park, Zoo, SEA LIFE and Howl‘o’ween activities. If you want to go into the Enchanted Hollow you'll need to buy additional tickets which are £5 for adults and £10 for children (who get a treat bag), although this year's Hollow tickets aren't on sale yet.

You can also book a short break from £34 per person, which includes a one-night stay at the theme park, plus early ride time and animal meet and greets.

Buy Chessington Howl'o'ween tickets from £34 at Chessington

Buy Chessington Howl'o'ween short breaks from £34 at Chessington

Read more of the Best UK theme parks for children and Best family escape rooms.

Warwick Castle has two main attractions during the Halloween season: The Haunted Castle and Warwick Castle After Dark.

Both see the castle get a complete spooky makeover and feature a tonne of family-friendly attractions, including mazes, shows, and Halloween games.

At both you can book a trip down to the Castle Dungeon; a guided walk through the history of the castle featuring true stories, actors, and a few jump scares for good measure.

The Haunted Castle

The Haunted Castle is the day-time part of Warwick Castle's Halloween celebrations. The event features over 15 live shows and attractions, plus full entry to the castle and grounds.

On the Dead Centre Stage there will be new Halloween-themed show playing every half-hour, with performances from the Witches of Warwick and the Headless Horsemen.

You'll also find mazes like the Haunted Hollows where you'll encounter ghosts, demons and other creepy characters.

Plus, don't miss out on The Falconer's Quest, the UK's biggest birds of prey show!

Buy Haunted Castle tickets from <del>£39</del> £25 (save £14 or 39%) at Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle After Dark

Warwick Castle After Dark is the evening version of their Halloween celebrations and is for the slightly more fearless among you.

At night the castle puts on the Festival of Frights, in which the courtyard is filled with live music, DJs, street food and fire eaters. The scare mazes are also more intense, with the actors looking a bit scarier and jumping out at you more.

Plus, you can book a tour of The Castle Dungeon and learn more about the castle's gruesome history.

Buy After Dark tickets from £23 at Warwick Castle

Are the Halloween events at Warwick Castle family-friendly?

Our parent testers also loved how spacious it was inside with its generous 18 litre capacity.

Trunkis are lightweight, can be used as cabin luggage on most airlines and as for the ride-on element, there are grips for stability, the saddle is very comfy and our testers reported that their children loved riding along on their Trunkis. Plus, for extra kid appeal, there are battery-free light-up wheels. There's also an adjustable handlebar and it folds up easily too.

Parent tester Emma, mum of our child tester Mariella, 4 and a half (pictured), praised the "clever design" and in particular the built-in kickstand. She added, "anything that encourages a child too pull their own suitcase is popular with me!" Emma also rated the ride-ability, commenting "it's really easy to ride and doesn't feel too heavy, even when there's stuff in the suitcase," although felt that the limited height settings for the handlebar made this more suitable for children at the younger end of the recommended 2-6 year age range.

Emma felt it was ideal for days out or a "short UK break, such as a self-catering holiday, where it would be useful to bring a scooter."

It can be carried as a rucksack, but if it gets too heavy they can pull it along instead. It has handy pouches to give easy access to drinks and there's a compartment on the back for your child's favourite teddy or doll, too – a very cute touch.

Parent tester Hannah, who tested the bag with her 5-year-old son Noah (pictured), was impressed by how lightweight and easy to use the bag was, saying that "even once fully packed, my son could either pull it along using the top handle or carry it on his back. The adjustable handle made it easy for a child or adult to roll the bag and it moved over pavements and grass perfectly." The bag comes in blue or pink.

Your child can pack their essentials, ride on it through the airport and then, once on the plane, the box turns into a seat extender that, depending on your child's age and height, allows them to use it as an in-flight bed or footrest.

It fits most standard economy seats in aircrafts and has been officially approved for use by some airlines, such as Virgin Atlantic. When being used as a ride-on, there's a top handle to hold onto and a foot ledge to provide comfort for your child if you're pulling them along.

The case itself is compact and parent tester Anita, who tested the JetKids BedBox with her 2-year-old and 4-year-old children warns that it may not be spacious enough to fit everything you need: "Because this luggage is also intended as a foot rest, it comes with padding to put on the seat, so that already took a chunk of space. Capacity wise, it is no replacement for your carry-on luggage. No matter how small, a carry-on can hold more than this. I tried to fit a few nappies, changes of clothes and a couple of activities for a 6 hour flight for 2 kids. Having said that, if you're flying fewer hours, if you only have 1 kid, it may be OK."

Available from: Amazon, Mamas&Papas, Stokke and Natural Baby Shower

Although it has a smaller weight limit than the Micro Eazy ride-on (15kg compared with 20kg), it comes with an easily removable, plush lined seat and 3-point safety harness, so it's a better option for younger children.

It's lightweight (even with the seat unit), comes with a build-in security lock and has great manoeuvrability with a foot brake for extra safety. Parent tester Natalie, who tested the Skyrider Luxury with her 3-year-old son and 21-month-old daughter Emilia (pictured), said that the Skyrider Luxury was "easy to manoeuvre on most surfaces. It was so handy for wheeling baby off the plane and through the airport. It's a decent size inside — we put 2 children's backpacks in there."

However, she did warn that "it can be a little difficult to move over dips in the ground and when moving from one surface to another. Also, the zip pull sometimes got stuck near the wheel."

So the Micro Eazy Ride-on 3-in-1 Suitcase is a fantastic option.

It’s a sleek piece of wheely hand luggage, which your child can ride on top of once they reach 18 months old. It’s '3 products in 1' because, as well as being a ride-on suitcase, the ride on part folds down to become a luggage-approved case which, depending on your airline, you can take on board with you. You can then remove the suitcase altogether and it becomes a slimline, foldable trike. It has a 20kg weight limit too, which is one of the highest for ride-on options on our list.

Available from: Amazon, Micro Scooters, Pramworld

What to look for when choosing children's luggage

Size and capacity — How much can you fit in the luggage? Some children's luggage options, especially those designed to be carried onto the plane, will have limited capacity and may be better for smaller items for the journey itself — such as entertainment for the flight. Others that are larger may be able to fit all of your child's holiday wardrobe inside. Also, look if there are any compartments — is there an easily accessible space to put small, loose items? Does it have any extras such as a bottle holder? If you do want luggage for your child that you can take on the plane as hand luggage, check that it's small enough. Most of the options on our list are suitable as carry-on luggage, but do always check with your airline.

Weight — Check how heavy the luggage is — will your child be able to pull it or carry it themselves with their belongings inside? If it's a ride-on and you're pulling them along, how heavy is it to do? Also, if you're travelling by plane, think about how much of your luggage allowance it will take up.

Wheels — Does it have wheels? Designs with wheels may be slightly easier to pull (or push) along than more traditional backpack styles that may be too heavy for your child to carry on a long journey. If your child gets bored or tired and you need to carry or pull it for them, is it easy to do? It may be worth also considering the handle height — if it's not adjustable then it may be harder for you to pull it if you need to.

Is it a ride-on? — Luggage that your child is able to ride on as you pull them along can be a great saviour for little legs on long journeys. There are plenty of ride-on options out there — some that you sit on, like the traditional Trunki, and now even scooter and trike designs. Check the weight limit of the luggage too, most are suitable to approximately 7 years but some may be less than that. Look at the different options and consider whether a ride-on may be the best option for you. If it's not a ride-on, consider how easy it will be for your child (or you) to carry or use.

Materials — How tough and durable is the luggage? How easy to clean is it? If you're travelling, accidents and spillages may happen and it's good to know if any fabric elements are machine washable. Also, check how sturdy the handle is. If it's flimsy then navigating a busy airport may be even more difficult — especially if your child is pulling it.

Style — There are many fun luggage options available for kids, as well as more traditional ones. If you're looking for something cute and appealing for your child's luggage then there's plenty of designs to choose from — from Disney characters to animals and even dinosaurs.

How we chose our 11 of the Best

When selecting our 11 best car seats, we considered size, capacity, materials used, weight, style, ride-on ability, extra features and whether it is worth the money. Most seats on this list have also been tested by parent testers with their children.

Our Best lists rely on a number of sources, including our independent reviews, testing undertaken during the MadeForMums Awards, and feedback from our home testing panel and Top Testers Club. Each year thousands of products are put through their paces by hundreds of parents across the country on behalf of MadeForMums, to ensure we’re bringing you honest and true reviews and recommendations.

Our list is not an ordered ranking from 1-11, instead it is a carefully selected group of tried-and-tested products, each of which we believe is best for a different situation or requirement. We don’t just tell you what is best, we help you discover what is best for your family.

Are you ready to make your next family day out a roaring success? Our guide to the best UK zoos is sure to do exactly that.

With zoos up and down the country, from Chester to Colchester, there's plenty of choice whether you and your family would prefer a day out close to home or whether you'd like to venture further afield to spot some of the most exciting animals in the UK.

Plus, we've included two experiences in this guide — the Paignton Zoo Meet and Feed the Giraffes and Junior Keeper Experience with lunch and day admission experiences — if you're looking to make your day out even more special.

However, the most important thing to consider when visiting a zoo is that your money is going towards helping animals. All of the zoos we've included below are undertaking crucial conservation work; London Zoo has reintroduced the smallest snails into the world, and it cares for critically endangered animals, such as the Sumatran tigers. Did you know that since 1994, London Zoo has co-ordinated the conservation breeding programmes for 25 species of partula snail in 16 zoos worldwide? There's a fun fact to tell the kids!

It's not just London Zoo which does brilliant conservation work, Twycross Zoo is the only zoo in the UK which cares for all four species of great ape.

Let's take a look at our furry good selection of UK zoos.

You can find more of the best days out and family experiences on Made For Mums Love to Visit.

If you'd like to be a part of history, head on down to London Zoo. London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo; it was opened way back in April 1828 and, although intended to be used as a collection for scientific study, London Zoo's mission shifted in the 1960s to focus on conservation due to wildlife decline.

At London Zoo, you and your family can explore various habitats from across the world, such as the rainforests of South America and the jungles of Central Africa. In these habitats, you can meet over 10,000 amazing animals, such as the marching leafcutter ants and the giant 193kg silverback gorilla. Your little ones will be able to learn interesting facts about their favourite animals such as the foods they eat and the threats they face in the wild.

As we mentioned earlier, it's important that when you visit a zoo, you know you're doing great things with your day out and that your money is going somewhere ethical. London Zoo is more than just a zoo, it's part of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which is a global wildlife conservation charity. For more information, you can check out London Zoo Conservation.

Buy London Zoo tickets from £27 at London Zoo

Twycross Zoo

If your children are fans of monkeys, take them to Twycross Zoo; Leicestershire's Twycross Zoo has the largest collection of monkeys and apes in the Western World. As well as fantastic animals, the zoo boasts The Gruffalo Discovery Land — which is new and improved for 2024 — where your little ones can meet Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake and, of course, the Gruffalo himself. There's also a Wet 'n' Wild play area, which is located near the penguins, where children can don their own flippers and splash around, plus a soft play area and nature reserve, too.

Twycross Zoo opened back in May 1963 and became a registered conservation charity in 1972, its mission is to support the preservation of species not only in Twycross Zoo but in animal range countries around the world. The zoo also delivers conservation education to create positive behaviour change for wildlife conservation. This Digital Writer's brilliant friend Denver Anderson works as a Senior Conservation Education Officer (see if you can spot her on the Twycross Zoo website!), so you can be sure your wildlife education is top-notch.

Buy Twycross Zoo tickets from £19.75 at Twycross Zoo

Chester Zoo

Did you know there are the equivalent of Oscars in the zoo world? At the esteemed annual British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) Awards, Chester Zoo won six awards, and with over 37,000 animals, 128 acres of zoological gardens, and brilliant conservation efforts, it's easy to see why!

Each visit to Chester Zoo enables the team to help endangered species around the world survive. Chester Zoo manages populations of species both in situ (which means in the wild) and ex-situ (in zoos and breeding centres) through research, conservation breeding, welfare and monitoring.

At Chester Zoo in Cheshire, you and your family can say 'hello' to an endangered pride of Asiatic Lions, walk next to colourful birds in the Latin American Aviary, and cruise down the lazy river boat ride. Plus, the fun doesn't have to stop when you leave Chester Zoo. Why not adopt an animal for your children? The adoption helps you fund the work Chester Zoo does to protect habitats and wildlife, and you can choose from your child's favourite animals such as penguins, orangutans, giraffes, and rhinos.

Buy Chester Zoo family ticket for £145 at Virgin Experience Days

Do your children enjoy waterparks?
This summer, you can join Dartmoor Zoo in celebrating 10 years of being a conservation, education and research charity. If you're local to Devon — or perhaps you're travelling to the coast for a summer holiday — take your whole family on a trip to Dartmoor Zoo.
This Digital Writer lived in Colchester for two years, and it's one of their biggest regrets not visiting Colchester Zoo! That being said, it's another excuse to return to the bustling Essex city.

Colchester Zoo is a fantastic day out for the whole family with over 160 species roaming around the zoo, from Komodo dragons to giraffes, and 60 acres of parklands and lakes to explore — yes, it is just as picturesque as it sounds. As well as gorgeous landscapes and animals, there are plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained, such as arts and crafts, Dinosaur Realm, the Lost Madagascar Road Train ride, indoor play areas, face painting, and you can hand feed some of the animals such as giraffes, rainbow lorikeets, goats and sheep. It's worth remembering to book these slots online at the Colchester Zoo website to avoid disappointment (and some potentially stroppy little ones!) on the day.

Also at Colchester Zoo, the zoo endeavours to make the experience as accessible as possible to everyone, and you can find out more about the considerations and restrictions at the Colchester Zoo website.

Buy Colchester Zoo tickets from <del>£28.22</del> £26.95 (save £1.27 or 5%) at Love to Visit

Whipsnade Zoo

Just like London Zoo, Whipsnade Zoo is part of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), and it's considered the 'big sister' of London Zoo. Set over a huge 600 acres, Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire is the UK's biggest zoo with over 2,500 animals like lions, elephants, giraffes and tigers, and it has children's play areas and a steam train ride, too, as well as plenty of wildlife to explore. As Whipsnade Zoo is part of ZSL, you can expect plenty of important conservation work going on behind the scenes. Let's take a look.

ZSL is a global conservation charity, with teams of scientists, conservationists, rangers and community workers who protect species and restore their habitats. So what does this look like? Whipsnade Zoo employs crucial breeding programmes for endangered wildlife, such as the scimitar-horned oryx, rhino, elephants and tigers. This means Whipsnade Zoo is breeding the animals to keep the species healthy in zoos before eventually releasing them back into the wild. Whipsnade Zoo also has the first public aquarium in the UK which is dedicated to conserving threatened and extinct (in the wild) freshwater fish, such as the La Palma pupfish and Turkish killifish.

Buy Whipsnade Zoo tickets from £32 at Tiqets

Paignton Zoo

Would you and your children like to join the keepers at Paignton Zoo in Devon to help out with the giraffes' feeding time? With this brilliant experience at Virgin Experience Days, you can! During the activity, you'll also learn lots of fun facts about Paignton Zoo's tallest resident. This experience also includes entry to Paignton Zoo, and it's worth noting that the activity is available seven days a week, all you have to do is book your preferred time slot once purchasing the voucher.

Buy Paignton Zoo Meet and Feed the Giraffes tickets for £122 at Virgin Experience Days

When it comes to accessibility and conservation efforts, Paignton Zoo certainly excels. The zoo (and this giraffe feeding experience) is suitable for wheelchair users, and there's great disabled access throughout the park, too.

In terms of conservation, did you know Paignton Zoo is part of Wild Planet Trust? Wild Planet Trust is a conservation charity working internationally to achieve the shared mission of preserving declining species. Wild Planet Trust was established in 2019, however, the organisation has been working as a registered education, scientific and conservation charity since 1957.

Buy Paignton Zoo tickets from £23.95 at Love to Visit

For South Lakes Safari Zoo especially, our best stain removers for clothes guide will come in handy!

What are the best toddler-friendly waterparks that also have plenty of excitement for older kids? We’ve narrowed down the top waterparks for the whole family in this handy guide.

For lots of us, a trip to the local waterpark was the ultimate school holiday treat — one of those all-day, towel-wrapped, hair-still-wet-on-the-way-home kind of memories.

Fast forward to parenting life, and waterparks are still a brilliant way to make memories with your own children. Whether it’s their first time paddling or they’re already wave machine pros, there’s something magical about seeing their faces light up at the sight of a massive slide or bubbly toddler splash pool.

Waterparks really are one of those rare all-ages crowd-pleasers. Most have a mix of toddler-friendly zones, shallow pools, flumes for older kids and thrill-seekers, and lazy rivers where you can all unwind together. Some even offer indoor and outdoor sections, so you’re sorted no matter what the weather’s doing.

If you’re planning a visit, it’s worth having a few essentials to hand to make the day run smoothly. Swimming is surprisingly thirsty work, especially for little ones who are in and out of the pool all day. Most parks have vending machines or cafés, but packing your own water bottles is a simple way to keep everyone hydrated without extra faff.

If you're heading outdoors, staying sun safe is a must. A lightweight T-shirt over swimwear is a great shout for keeping shoulders from burning, especially if your child only returns to you when snacks are needed (we’ve been there). Add in some water-resistant sun cream, sunhats and sunglasses, and you’re good to go.

It’s also worth packing according to your child’s swimming ability. Armbands, goggles or float vests can help boost their confidence — and yours — so you can all enjoy the day with fewer worries. Thankfully, most UK waterparks cater for all levels, from non-swimmers to underwater explorers, with plenty of lifeguards on hand and clearly marked areas.

So, grab the swimsuits, roll up the beach towels, and get ready to make some waterpark memories. Whether it’s your toddler’s first splash or your tween’s fiftieth flume ride, there’s a brilliant day out waiting just around the corner.

Best UK indoor and outdoor waterparks at a glance:

Best for indoor activities: Alton Towers Waterpark

Best for adults with toddlers: Savannah Splash Pool

Best for UK's largest waterpark: Sandcastle Waterpark

Best for inflatable fun: Moorways Sports Village And Water Park

Best for small children: Amity Beach

Best for thrilling rides: Splashdown

Best indoor and outdoor waterparks to visit in the UK

Alton Towers Waterpark, Stoke-on-Trent

Best for: Indoor activities

Tickets from £18 | Best for toddlers and over | Free parking with your waterpark ticket | Uttoxeter station is 10 miles away from the resort

Pros:

You can purchase discounted tickets online

Free parking with your waterpark ticket

Plenty to do for toddlers

Cons:

If travelling via public transport, the train station is a sizable distance away

It’s no exaggeration when we say the Stoke-on-Trent theme park has something for every member of the family. For fearless teenagers, there’s daring rides such as The Smiler with 14 loops, Oblivion with its vertical drop (which is only spoken about in fear-stricken whispers), and Wicker Man with its realistic flame effects.

For younger children, there are rides such as the In The Night Garden Magical Boat Ride, as well as themed areas like The World of David Walliams, which is inspired by David Walliams' books, Gangsta Granny and Billionaire Boy, just to name a few. If you have young children, we’re sure you’ve already heard of CBeebies Land, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year. CBeebies Land has attractions such as Hey Duggee's Big Adventure Badge and Andy's Adventures Dinosaur Dig. Plus, did you know you can currently meet Bluey at CBeebies Land?

If this wasn’t enough to warrant a trip to Alton Towers, the theme park also has an indoor and outdoor waterpark.

In the indoor Alton Towers Waterpark, you’ll find lazy rivers, crazy cannons, interactive play areas which are great for smaller children, and high-speed water slides such as the Master Blaster water coaster which will test even the most fearless of older children’s nerves.

If the weather is warm enough during your day out, head outside to swim underneath the sun, chill out in the Bubbly Wubbly pool while your kids are playing, and experience the thrilling Flash Floods flume ride.

It’s worth noting that Alton Towers Waterpark operates a strict adult-to-child ratio for all children under the age of eight: one adult (aged 16 or over) to one child aged four or under; or one adult (aged 16 or over) to two children aged five, six, or seven.

Buy Alton Towers Waterpark tickets from £18 at Alton Towers

Our friends at RadioTimes.com have put together a guide on how to get cheap Alton Towers tickets.

Savannah Splash Pool at Chessington World of Adventures, Chessington

Best for: Adults with toddlers

Free if you’re staying at Chessington World of Adventures Resort | Best for all ages | Parking from £15 | Chessington South Station is a 10-minute walk away

Pros:

Free if you book a stay at Chessington World of Adventures

Great for toddlers

Relaxing environment

Cons:

Not open to the public

Not many attractions for older children

Located just one hour outside of London, in between Epsom and Weybridge, Chessington World of Adventures has plenty of attractions for the whole family, including 40 rollercoasters and water rides, a zoo with more than 1,000 animals, and shows, too.

If you’re familiar with Chessington, you’ve probably heard of the talked-about Vampire, Dragon’s Fury, and Rattlesnake rides, Tiger Rock and the Gruffalo River Ride Adventure log flumes, and the World of Jumanji, which is the park’s latest addition.

You can sleep over at Chessington World of Adventures in one of the six themed rooms at the Safari Hotel, and this is where the Savannah Splash Pool is.

More tame than the other waterparks in this guide, the Savannah Splash Pool is perfect for parents and toddlers who are looking to wind down after their Chessington World of Adventures experience.

The Savannah Splash Pool has a 15-metre swimming pool, a kids splash pool with jets and water canons, a steam room, spa pool, and a sauna; it’s the perfect oasis in the middle of the theme park.

As we mentioned, the Savannah Splash Pool is only open for Resort Hotel and Explorer Glamping guests, and be sure to book your slot online.

Get Savannah Splash Pool tickets for free at Chessington

Buy entry tickets to Chessington World of Adventures from £29 at Chessington

We've put together a guide to how to get cheap Chessington World of Adventures tickets.

Amity Beach at Thorpe Park, Surrey

Best for: Small children

Tickets from £25 | Best for toddlers and over | Parking from £10 | Staines station is 3 miles away from Thorpe Park

Pros:

Great for toddlers

A relaxing haven away from the main theme park

Under threes go free

Cons:

Small in comparison to the other waterparks

Limited opening dates

Alongside Alton Towers, Thorpe Park is one of the big names in the theme park world. Located in the middle of Chertsey and Staines-upon-Thames in Surrey, just one hour’s drive from London, Thorpe Park has an impressive rides repertoire; the theme park has over 30 heart-pumping rides, such as Stealth, Colossus, Nemesis Inferno, and the Swarm.

For younger children, Thorpe Park has the equally as exciting Flying Fish junior coaster and Angry Birds 4D Experience. There are also water rides at Thorpe Park (separate to the actual waterpark) such as Tidal Wave, Storm Surge and Rumba Rapids.

But how does the actual waterpark fare?

If you’re looking for a relaxing and quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle of Thorpe Park, Amity Beach is a prime location. Best suited to young children, Amity Beach offers a place to paddle and play in the sand, as well as having plenty of loungers for (probably worn-out) parents.

It’s worth noting that Amity Beach is only open on selected dates, so we’d recommend checking the website or booking online in advance before showing up, and availability may change depending on the weather. Plus, and this perhaps goes without saying, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

In terms of accessibility, manual wheelchairs are permitted, however, electric wheelchairs are not permitted in wet areas. There is step-free access, and Amity Beach is appropriate for those with sensory needs.

Buy Amity Beach tickets from £29 at Thorpe Park

To help you save those all important pennies, here's how to get cheap Thorpe Park tickets.

Sandcastle Waterpark, Blackpool

Best for: UK’s largest waterpark

Tickets from £15 | Best for toddlers and over | Parking from £12 | Blackpool South station is a 12-minute walk from Sandcastle Waterpark

Pros:

Ability to book online

Train station is very close for those travelling via public transport

Biggest waterpark on our list

Accessible

Spa for adults

Cons:

All tickets are valid for up to three hours only

Parking isn’t free

Sandcastle Waterpark has everything you’d expect from the UK’s largest waterpark. For plucky older kids, there’s the Master Blaster (the world’s longest indoor roller coaster waterslide), Aztec Falls, Sidewinder (the world’s first indoor white knuckle sidewinder, with an almost vertical drop), and more. For younger waterpark-goers, there’s the Typhoon Lagoon wave pool, Treetops water chutes, Caribbean Storm Treehouse, and Fort Riptide, just to name a few.

We love that Sandcastle Waterpark has the Sea Breeze Spa, a spa for adults. In the Sea Breeze Spa, there’s a sauna, steam room, aromatherapy room, salt inhalation room, as well as heated loungers and foot spas.

Another fantastic element that Sandcastle Waterpark certainly leads the way with is that the Blackpool waterpark is accessible for all guests. The waterpark is barrier-free and step-free, it has exacted measures for people with mobility impairments, and has features such as an autism-friendly Quiet Room. Sandcastle Waterpark has plenty of information about accessibility on the website, so be sure to read that before you travel.

With a waterpark as popular as this one, it won’t come as a surprise to you that Sandcastle Waterpark gets busy during school holidays and weekends. We recommend that families with small children visit the waterpark first thing in the morning or towards the end of the day, or during out-of-season periods, for example, if you’re able to go mid-week.

Also, session times are a permanent instalment at Sandcastle Waterpark, admitting you to a three-hour session. It’s important that you book online in advance to secure your family’s slot.

Buy Sandcastle Waterpark tickets from £15 at Sandcastle Waterpark

If you're looking to visit a theme park with your family, be sure to read our best UK theme parks guide. Plus, here's how to get cheap LEGOLAND Windsor tickets.

Moorways Sports Village And Water Park, Derby

Best for: Inflatable fun

Tickets from £9.95 | Best for ages 5+ | Free parking for up to 3 hours | Peartree station is a 15-minute walk from Moorways

Pros:

Under fives and carers go free

Free parking

Accessible sessions for those with special education needs and disabilities

Inexpensive.

Cons:

Fairly small leisure pool

One of our favourite memories as a child was taking part in the inflatable assault course at our local leisure centre — racing against our siblings to see who can make it to the end of the track and whizz down the slide first! At Moorways Sports Village And Water Park in Derby, the waterpark has The Atlantis inflatable located in the Main Pool on Saturdays and Sundays, then between Monday to Friday in Derby school holidays.

As well as The Atlantis, there’s a 50-metre swimming pool and leisure pool.
Find out what our reviewer Hollie and her two young children thought of this Eurocamp site close to both the capital and Disneyland Paris and only a few hours drive from Calais.

Anyone with young children and a desire to get away during the holidays will have heard the name Eurocamp. It's often passed around in conversations between parents when the subject of fuss-free budget-friendly family holidays come up. Nearly everyone who's been mentions how much more affordable it is than its well-known Dutch competitor, especially when it comes to the price of the activities.

Aside from the cost-saving element, Eurocamp appeals to parents for the brilliant flexibility they offer, the fact that the accommodation is all self-catering and has multiple rooms, the sheer quantity of activities on each site and the English-speaking staff and kids' clubs. For many parents the fact that you can take the ferry and drive to many of the camps is a real draw too.

Who we are and when we visited:

Hollie visited Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont with her husband and two children, aged 7 and 4, during half term in May 2025.

Hollie is Senior Digital Journalist at MadeForMums and has over a decade's experience reviewing holidays for national publications. This trip was Hollie's first foray into the world of "camping" and she was pleasantly surprised to find that Eurocamp caters for both holidaymakers who love to sleep under canvas as well as those who value double beds, private showers and modern amenities.

Hollie chose Eurocamp's La Croix du Vieux Pont site because of its proximity to Disneyland Paris and how easy it was to access from Calais. The five-star camp rating was also a big draw!

What is Eurocamp and how does it work?

Eurocamp is based in Cheshire, UK, but doesn't have any UK-based parks. Instead there are 400 sites to choose from across France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Switzerland, Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Germany, so if you fall in love with the company's offering and ethos, there's no chance of ever getting bored when it comes to location.

Eurocamp doesn't own each individual campsite, except for those under the Marvilla Parks umbrella. Instead, they partner with various different private campsites and parks across Europe and act as a tour operator to create package holidays that make booking a trip with ferry crossings simple, easy and budget-friendly.

In a nutshell, Eurocamp is a flexible, affordable and activity-packed self-catering family holiday option that encourages kids and adults to get off screens, into the great outdoors and spending quality time together as a family.

What is the location of Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont?

La Croix du Vieux Pont is one of Eurocamp's most popular parcs with British holidaymakers and for good reason – this parc is all about location, location, location. It's one of the closest Eurocamp sites to both Disneyland Paris and Paris itself and is also an easy 2.5-3 hour drive from Calais. If you live in the south of England, you can get up in the morning and be at your holiday destination by the afternoon, making it one of the easiest Eurocamps to get to from the UK.

The campsite is in Berny-Rivière, a lovely rural location on the outskirts of a small town called Soissons and the drive to the entrance takes you through undulating farm land and through charming, but rather sleepy French villages. The 1000+ acre parc is situated on the bank of the River Aisne, (although depending on where your accommodation is you may not see much of the river), and is centred around several small lakes, so if you like being by the water, it's a brilliant choice.

You really do get the best of both country and city life here, as it's under an hour and a half by car to Disneyland Paris (or there's a weekly shuttle that runs from the site), just 1 hour to Parc Astérix and less than an hour to another amusement park called La Mer de Sable. Paris is also only an hour and a half away and easily doable in a day.

Champagne lovers will be delighted to hear that Reims and the start of the Champagne route in the Vallée de la Marne is just under an hour away and history buffs will be in their element with many of the major WW1 Aisne battlefields, memorials and museums on the doorstep.

Even with two small children in tow and in the space of just 6 days, we managed a visit to a Champagne house as well as multiple cultural trips out to chateaus, medieval towns and historic sites thanks to the excellent location.

What is the nearest airport to Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont?

The nearest airports are Paris Beauvais, 86km away or Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, which is 72km away. If you're not hiring a car at the airport, you can get a train from the airport to Soissons, but it involves a change at Paris Nord and then Soissons to the campsite is about 20 minutes by taxi.

Would you recommend travelling by car?

We'd highly recommend travelling by car to Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont, especially as it's one of the closest Eurocamp parcs to Calais. The rural location means it's difficult to access by any other means, plus having a car gives you the freedom to explore the lovely Aisne Valley countryside around the parc and to make your own way to Disneyland Paris (and leave when the kids are shattered or enjoy "just one more ride" if they're not!).

If you don't want to spend time in the car or leave the park once you're in situ though, it's completely possible to just unpack and relax thanks to the on-site boulangerie, shop, restaurant and takeaway.

What is the accommodation like at Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont?

There's everything from camping pitches for people with their own tents to huge ski chalet style gîtes for large groups at this campsite, depending on your budget and preferred holiday style. Eurocamp definitely provides for families who like the idea of the great outdoors but with all the modern luxuries of indoor living, such as hot showers, separate bedrooms and a kitchen, so it was perfect for a tent-averse mum like me who loves her creature comforts.

When booking through Eurocamp, you can choose between holiday homes (classic, comfort, premium and ultimate), apartments, suites and studios (in the main building above the shops) as well as the larger lodges and chalets that sleep 5+ guests. As a family of four, we were in a premium holiday home, which had three bedrooms, a kitchen and dining area and a lovely large verandah that felt like it was brand new, plus a private area of grass that became a makeshift football pitch for the week.

Our holiday home also came with air conditioning, which was a blissful little extra when the weather suddenly turned hot, and an outdoor barbecue, which really got us in the holiday mode. Our accommodation was very modern and clean, but quite bijou (it can sleep 6 but that would be very tight!) and while the kitchen was well kitted out, there wasn't an oven – just a hob and microwave – which meant we had to be inventive at times when cooking dinner. Some lodges do come with ovens though so worth checking that detail.

The location of the accommodation on the parc can have a big impact on your stay, so it's also a good idea to look at the map and think about the area you'd like to be in. The quietest area is over the other side of the road away from the facilities (accessed via an underpass), while the most private lodges looked to be the ones down by the river or on the opposite side of the lake to the kiosk, as these all had tall hedges around them.

We were in a small collection of lodges just behind the swimming pool and restaurant, which meant we were in the thick of the action and found everything very easy to access, however it could be noisy at times and if we booked again we'd definitely opt for a lake or river view to make the most of the pretty surroundings.

What are the facilities like at Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont?

There's a dizzying array of activities and facilities to choose from on a Eurocamp holiday. Some sites come with theme parks or water parks attached. There's even a parc in The Netherlands with free entry to the neighbouring safari park. As we were travelling with a 7 and 4 year old (who both hate rides), theme parks and large slides weren't what we were after, but if you do have daredevils in tow, you'll find La Croix du Vieux Pont still delivers.

As well as its proximity to Disneyland, La Croix du Vieux Pont is known for it's variety of water-based activities and facilities, including two indoor and one outdoor pool, waterslides, three lakes, the river and a lagoon with sandy beach and beach bar (which was unfortunately closed when we visited but looks like an amazing facility for summer).

The parc has been open since the 1980s, and while some areas are a little dated, many areas, including the main restaurant and pool bar, have clearly been updated very recently. Inside the main building, there's a smart botanical vibe and lots of comfy seating, and the terrace overlooking the pool is a delightful place to enjoy cocktails. Down on the lower level, there's an arcade area decorated in cool neon paints, that has something for both younger kids to enjoy as well as teenagers.

The outside pool looked a lot more modern than the indoor ones; however, it wasn't heated like the indoor pools, so only a few brave swimmers (including my husband and son!) dared swim in it. If having a warm swimming pool is a top priority for you, you'll want to do your research on other parcs, as many Eurocamp sites do have heated pools.

We went swimming every day (the pool opens from 10:30am - 7:30pm) after a leisurely breakfast of viennoiseries from the boulangerie – my son had perfected "deux pains au chocolat s'il vous plait" by the end of the week. I was initially worried the 10:30am opening time would be way too late, but found that my kids were so exhausted by all the fresh air and late nights that they slept in every morning – bliss!

Our favourite area was down by the main lake and my kids spent many happy hours throwing sticks into the water, running around the play area, and making the most of the kiosk area where you can do everything from trampolining, go-karting and jumping on the bouncy castle to riding a flamingo Pedalo or taking a mini motorised bumper boat out on the lake. We also enjoyed a very competitive round of mini golf on the 18-hole course.

Every activity required a ticket, but at around 2 euros each, it was still very affordable. Plus, there's a bar right by all the activities, so weary parents can pull up a chair and enjoy a nice crisp glass of French wine while watching their kids exhaust themselves.

We were blessed with some excellent weather while at La Croix du Vieux Pont so spent most of our time outside, but had it been raining we'd have been well catered for as other activities on site include 10 pin bowling, a soft play area, a laser tag labyrinth, a billiards and games room and a huge multi sports complex. We did also glimpse an indoor water splash park that would have been fabulous for toddlers but appears to have been closed for some time.

Older children can also make the most of some more challenging outdoor activities, including archery, a zip line, cycling, fishing or table tennis.

What is the entertainment like for both children and adults?

Eurocamp is so family-friendly that we didn't see the need to spend any time away from our two – but if you do want a break or to make use of the small wellness centre for a massage, there are free kids' clubs starting from as young as baby club for an hour going up to teen club for 14 - 17 year olds.

As our children are quite shy and were absolutely exhausted by all the sun and fresh air by the evening, we just stayed in our lodge and played games, built Lego before bed or visited the arcade for a quick game, however if you've got slightly older kids or kids with more energy to burn then there is evening entertainment in the form of mini discos or themed shows. Adults can enjoy the regular quizzes, bingo and the brilliant vibe at the bar, especially when sports are on the big screen.

The main entertainment for us though, was when we were out and about exploring. During our stay, we took a day trip to Disneyland Paris and enjoyed watching the parade and soaking up all of the magic involved in the current Music Festival, running until September 2025. Read our full review of Disneyland Paris here. We also managed to fit in memorable day trips to the Champagne town of Chateau-Thierry, the gorgeous and historic canalside Amiens and a visit to the hidden gem Fort de Condé with its hilarious swinging nets activity.

What are the food and drink options like at Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont?

Eurocamp holidays are all self-catering, which is a huge draw for parents catering for fussy kids on a budget. However, we were delighted to find that there were a couple of restaurants and a takeaway service (Brother's Corner) on site, so mixed up cooking in our holiday house or on the BBQ on our deck with delicious takeaway pizzas and one night in the main restaurant, which had both adult and kid-friendly options. There's also a restaurant next to the lagoon called La Place, although as the lagoon was out of action, we didn't use this during our stay.

There was a well-stocked shop at the entrance to the park, which is open from 8am to 7pm, and the boulangerie, which we visited every morning without fail. We also did a big shop at the start of the holiday in a much larger Intermarché in the nearby village of Vic-Sur-Aisne, which also had a couple of authentic-looking French bistros if you fancy eating out.

The food in the restaurant, La Brasserie Willo, was nice but not super high end or expensive, and the service was friendly and fast. At one point, some garlic butter shot out of the snail my husband was eating straight into my daughter's eye (only in France!) and the staff couldn't have been more attentive – providing iced water and napkins as well as bringing sweeties and flowers to the table to distract her.

The takeaway pizzas were delicious and a real hit with my kids, but in an attempt to get a feel for real French culture and food, we headed to the nearby town of Soissons for a meal in a bistro by the gorgeous cathedral.

Is Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont good value for money?

In a word: yes! We couldn't believe how many activities are on site for the cost of the holiday. In a week, you can take part in a multitude of activities for free or just several euros a go that would cost hundreds of pounds back home in the UK. With three pools and the lagoon (when open) as well as lakes and the river, there's plenty of free water-based activities to enjoy, and it's brilliant that it's all just there within walking or cycling distance whenever you fancy.

Our six-night stay with Eurocamp during May half term in a premium mobile home and including return ferry crossings and end of stay cleaning, came to £1,366.44. Or around £342pp, which is really well-priced, especially when you think we could have added two more people to our holiday house. If you have younger children and can go out of the main holidays, the savings are even more impressive. What we valued the most, though, was that Eurocamp doesn't have set arrival or departure days. We arrived on a Monday and departed on a Sunday and found the flexibility invaluable.

While we were staying at La Croix du Vieux Pont, the weather was lovely, but with the lagoon closed, the swimming pools did get very crowded, and it was difficult to find a sun lounger. We did occasionally have to queue for activities at the kiosk too, however, for the price of the holiday, that's to be expected, and if you're after exclusivity and peace and quiet, this isn't the place for you.

MadeForMums verdict

Eurocamp's La Croix du Vieux Pont, as well as the company's other sites, are most definitely family holidays and everything is geared towards kids. We'd say this camp works best for slightly younger children from toddlers to tweens, as some teenagers might get a little bored with the slightly smaller slides and gentle activities after a while. Our 4 and 7 year-olds however, barely scratched the surface of what was on offer, and we could have easily stayed another week.

A stay here is all about giving kids access to endless amazing activities and exercise while adults can sit back and relax knowing they are safe, happy and have plenty of healthy things to do that don't involve screen or cost the earth to take part in. Parents of slightly older kids can even give them freedom to walk or cycle around by themselves as it feels very safe and secure.

If you're really looking to get under the skin of the country you're visiting though or immerse yourself in the culture, you'll be disappointed, as once on site we could have been anywhere and everyone speaks perfect English.

Our main takeaway from this stay is that you'll never hear the words "I'm bored" – which, as far as we're concerned, is pretty much priceless!

Go there:

Seven nights from Saturday 16th August 2025 (school summer holidays), staying in a Classic XL two-bedroom holiday home that sleeps up to six guests, from £1,200.78 per party.

Seven nights from Saturday 25th October 2025 (October half term), staying in a Comfort XL two-bedroom holiday home that sleeps up to six guests, from £476.70 per party.

Book your stay at La Croix du Vieux Pont here

Read more:

Best Disneyland Paris deals

Best family cruises: fun for all ages

11 of the best children's luggage options

Although the theme park is well signposted, it really is tucked away in a very rural location – so much so you may feel like you’ve taken a wrong turn as you drive through country lanes to get there. Just trust in the satnav – use ST10 4DB – follow the brown road signs and you will get there eventually!

Is Alton Towers near a train station?

The closest train station to Alton Towers is Uttoxeter, which is 10 miles – a 30-minute bus ride or 20-minute taxi drive – from the resort. The taxi drop off is located in the Express parking section, so you’re right at the entrance to the park.

What is parking at Alton Towers like?

Standard and blue badge parking costs £12 per car. The standard car park is a good 15–25 minute walk to the park, although you can catch the monorail instead, which will help save little legs (and is also exciting in itself for Alton Towers first timers!). The monorail runs regularly throughout the day and drops you right at the entrance to the park.

You can pay more for Express parking, which is right at the entrance of the park. This costs £20 or £10 for Gold, Platinum, or Premium Merlin Passholders. It’s essential to pre-book Express Parking in advance online.

Knowing we were going to be walking a lot during the day, we treated ourselves to Express Parking and, if your budget stretches, we’d 100% recommend it. It was a lifesaver at the end of the day when everyone was exhausted.

When we drove into the park, we initially missed the turning for Express Parking – which is at Gate 4, alongside blue badge parking spaces – and had to drive to the main car park before doing a big loop back to where we started. Don’t make the same mistake as us, or you’ll be queuing in traffic for no reason for a long time!

Is CBeebies Land separate to Alton Towers?

CBeebies Land is one of 12 themed areas within the Alton Towers Resort. The resort has more than 40 rides and attractions in total, and your tickets include access for all. However, there are other attractions on site, such as the Alton Towers Waterpark, which you need to buy separate tickets for. You'll find CBeebies Land mercifully close to the entrance – excellent news for parents of young children who want to keep walking to a minimum.

Buy Alton Towers Waterpark tickets at Alton Towers

How much do Alton Towers tickets cost in 2025?

On-the-day walk up prices cost up to £68 a person, so it’s well worth booking online in advance – tickets booked ahead of your visit start at £29, depending on the time of year you go.

Alton Towers offer Parent & Toddler tickets, for just £29 for an adult and toddler aged 5 and under. These special tickers are not available during weekends and school holidays but are a great way to make your visit more affordable if you have young children and aren’t tied to specific days. Children under 0.9m go free.

If you plan on visiting regularly you could always consider an Alton Towers Annual Pass, which gives you year-long access to the theme park for £109, or a Merlin Annual Pass which starts at £99.

Buy Alton Towers tickets from £29 at Alton Towers

What were the opening and closing times for Alton Towers like?

Alton Towers is open from March until November. It closes for the winter season but does host its Christmas Day Out event on selected dates in November and December.

The park opens at 9am, with rides starting at 10am, but closing times vary during the seasons, depending on the light and the weather. Opening times are updated on the website, so do check there before you book.

How big is Alton Towers?

Huge! The theme park is spread out over 550 acres and there’s no getting around the fact you’re likely to do a lot of walking. We clocked up a whopping 20,000 steps on our visit (and that was the adults – it will have been a lot more for our children’s little legs!) making our way through all the different parts of the resort.

There’s over 40 rides and attractions to explore, with half aimed at young children and families. Despite being there all day, we still ran out of time, so I’d recommend planning out in advance your must-dos and head to those rides or attractions first. That way, no one ends up disappointed.

What rides does Alton Towers have?

If your child is 0.9m or above there’s a massive choice of rides for them to enjoy. But of course, Alton Towers s famous for its high-octane rollercoasters like Nemesis Reborn, The Smiler, Oblivion and the resort’s newest ride, Toxicator. If you’ve got older kids who are thrill-seekers, there’s a lot on offer here. While our children weren’t tall enough for most of the white-knuckle rides, there was still plenty to enjoy.

Some of our favourites included:

Th13teen (Minimum 1.2m) – A thrilling high-speed rollercoaster that takes you through blacked out tunnels and features the world’s first vertical free fall drop. None of us had a clue what to expect and even our 5-year-old (fearless!) declared it the best ride of the day. Not for the faint hearted though!

Wicker Man (Minimum 1.2m) – Themed around the film, this wooden rollercoaster is breathtakingly fast. While I loved the immersive feel, including a scene-setting film as we queued, it was a bit too much for the children, cue a lot of eye and ear covering.

Congo River Rapids (Minimum 1.1m) – Hop into one of the circular rafts and splash down the rapids. Oh, and prepare to get wet! This is a great ride for the whole family, offering enough speed to feel thrilling, with the added bonus of water. Our children loved it! Top tip: pack your own waterproofs rather than forking out for the ponchos, which cost £20 per adult.

Runaway Mine Train (Minimum 1.1m) – This classic runaway train ride is perfect for children who love fast rides, but aren’t keen on the scary theming around some of the other rollercoasters like Wicker Man. This was one ride both my son and daughter wanted to go on multiple times.

If you’re after a change of pace, we enjoyed visiting the Sharkbait Reef by SEA LIFE at Alton Towers Resort, which was a small aquarium tucked away in Mutiny Bay. The kids loved the touch pool, where they could stroke chocolate chip starfish and let shrimp nibble their fingers, but it was the walk-through shark tunnel that really wowed.

Buy Alton Towers tickets from £29 at Alton Towers

What rides does CBeebies Land at Alton Towers have?

CBeebies Land is a must-visit for families with young kids. It’s such a well-designed space, featuring rides themed to popular CBeebies shows and it feels like every little detail has been thought out here to make it accessible and enjoyable for families. The Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure is the fastest ride here – and usually draws the biggest queues – but if your little ones prefer more sedate offerings, the Postman Pat Parcel Post and Get Set Go Tree Top Adventure are worth queuing for.

Alongside the rides, CBeebies Land has an excellent Hey Duggee-themed adventure playground, which we found was the perfect place to let the kids run around after being in queues for a while. There’s also a brilliant schedule of Live Shows and meet and greets; just make sure you check the Big Fun Show Time schedule as you arrive at CBeebies Land, as we missed Bluey by seconds and my daughter was not happy. Thankfully we did catch Peter Rabbit for a cuddle instead!

Which rides at Alton Towers have height restrictions?

For most of the thrill rides you need to be 1.4m tall, but Spinball Whizzer, Wicker Man and TH13TEEN have a height restriction of 1.2 and over. My daughter measured in just over 120cm and was given a green wristband to show she was tall enough to ride – something that saved us being measured each time.

Most of the rides at CBeebies land don’t have height restrictions, instead they just require each child to ride with an adult. The exceptions are Peter Rabbit Hippity Hop, Go Jetters Vroomster Zoom, Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure and Justins Pie-O-Natic Factory, which all have a minimum heigh of 0.9m.

What are the queue times like at Alton Towers?

Queuing is part and parcel of any theme park visit, and Alton Towers is no exception. I won’t sugar coat it, the queues can get very long, although we were pleasantly surprised at how much shorter the queues were on our visit that we’d expected. Queue times are displayed at the start of every ride, so you have an idea of how long you’re going to have to wait.

My top tips for beating the queues – or at least reducing your queue time as much as possible – are:

Get there for opening time. Although the rides don’t start until 10am, the park gates open at 9am, so we arrived just after 9am and got straight in the queue for Wicker Man – a ride we knew would get busy and one we all were keen to try out. Once the rides opened, we were on in about 15 minutes.

Download the app. The free Alton Towers app is handy for all kinds of reasons, but the live queue times was a game-changer. We were able to keep an eye on the length of queues via the app, to plan where to head to next.

Buy Alton Towers tickets from £29 at Alton Towers

Does Alton Towers offer fast track passes and how much do they cost?

If you really want to make the most of the day, Fastrack passes will help you jump to the front of the queue for some of the most popular rides at the resort. The catch? These don’t come cheap. Fastrack passes range from £35 to £140 per person, depending on the level you opt for. Yes, it’s very expensive, but ours made the world of difference, especially when queuing with kids. You can buy Fastrack on the day, but at an inflated price, so I’d suggest booking in advance if you can.

What are the food and drink options like at Alton Towers?

It’s very much usual theme park fare as far as the food and drink options go at Alton Towers – with lots of burgers, fries, pizzas and ice creams on offer. There are numerous sit-in restaurants, kiosks, coffee shops and vending machines dotted around the park, so you’ll never have to go far to find somewhere to grab a bite to eat.

Three portions of chips and beans, a large chicken wrap and drink from a kiosk in Mutiny Bay set us back £27.47, while two ice creams and a Calippo cost £8.90. Price-wise it’s what I would expect to pay on a day out like this, and we were all happy with the quality of the food and the service we received.

I liked how the Little Explorers Lunch Box food kiosk in CBeebies offered pick and mix picnic boxes fir children, alongside hot and cold sandwiches.

There are plenty of spaces to have a picnic, so if you do want to save a bit of money, I’d recommend taking a packed lunch.

What are the other facilities like at Alton Towers?

When visiting a theme park with kids you really don’t want to have to be traipsing around for miles to track down a toilet. Thankfully, toilets here were plentiful and clean. Each toilet block had a baby changing room, but accessible toilets and changing places were a little more spread out.

As I’ve mentioned before, there’s a lot of walking involved on a day out to Alton Towers, so if you regret your decision to leave the stroller at home there’s always the option of hiring a single (£10) or double buggy (£15) from Towers Trading Co. just inside the entrance of the park.

There are Quiet Rooms fitted with sensory equipment for those with additional needs, as well as the option to hire ear defenders. I was impressed with the boards at the entrance to each ride and attraction, listing the sensory level in an easy-to-read colour coded display. We found these quite useful when deciding whether a ride was suitable for our children.

Buy Alton Towers tickets from £29 at Alton Towers

What is Alton Towers like for families?

As the UK’s largest theme park, Alton Towers has a reputation as one of the best with some of the biggest, most extreme rides and rollercoasters. But it’s also widely known among parents of pre-schoolers as the home of CBeebies Land and for older children as the home of The World of David Walliams.

It’s such a big, well-known destination that it’s always going to be busy here and it’s never going to be cheap. But it’s worth it for a special day out or weekend away.

Alton Towers is an unforgettable experience for children and is filled with fun.

Are there any scary/boring elements that young or sensitive children might not enjoy?

One thing Alton Towers does particularly well is commit to a theme, and the main rollercoaster rides are themed from the moment you join the queue (think atmospheric music, props and visuals). While this only enhances the experience for teens and adults, we did find some of the staging scared our rollercoaster-loving kids. They were desperate to go on the rides, but needed a lot of reassurance while we were waiting to go on.

How accessible is Alton Towers?

The site is very flat. So, accessibility is not an issue and accessible, step-free routes are well sign posted. However, pushchairs aren’t allowed in most of the ride queues. So, you do need to leave them in designated buggy parks – meaning you are holding your baby/toddler for some potentially long periods of time.

For wheelchair users, there are designated access points on most rides and Alton Towers offers a Ride Access Pass to guests who may find it difficult to stand for long periods of time that allows them to join a “virtual” queue then arrive at the ride at a fixed time. Disabled visitors can also bring a carer for free.

Disabled toilets (RADAR key required, available to loan on the day) are found throughout the park and a designated Changing Places facility can be found in the X-Sector zone.

Guide dogs are welcome but cannot go on any of the rides so must be left at the access points.

In CBeebies Land, Mr Tumble’s Something Special Sensory Garden is a great quiet space for children who may be overwhelmed by crowds, noise or just all the excitement of the day.

Buy Alton Towers tickets from £29 at Alton Towers

Would you recommend visiting Alton Towers in bad weather?

As the majority of the park is outdoors there’s not a lot of opportunity to escape the rain if the weather turns. We were treated to a beautiful sunny day, and I can’t help but think the enjoyment would have been dampened a bit by continuous rain. There are a few indoor rides and attractions, but as most are outside you do run the risk of these closing in very bad weather.

While rain showers won’t dampen your day, I wouldn’t recommend visiting in heavy rain with kids, No one wants to deal with the fallout from that!

Sarah, a freelance parenting writer and editor, visited Warwick Castle with her husband and their eight-year-old and five-year-old children on a dry and sunny Thursday during the school Easter holidays.

What age is Warwick Castle best for:

Best for: Primary school age children who will love the Zog theme, Princess Tower, Horrible History maze and live shows

Still good fun for: Grown-ups and older children. There’s so much to explore and the live shows really do cater for all ages.

Avoid if: You have mobility issues or have a young baby. Pushchairs can’t be taken into the main house of the Castle due to stairs, and wheelchair accessibility is limited in certain parts.

Buy Warwick Castle tickets from £26 at Warwick Castle

How easy is Warwick Castle to get to?

We found Warwick Castle so easy to get to. It’s situated on the outskirts of Warwick and is well signposted from all directions. It’s just 2 miles from junction 15 of the M40 and we had no problems following the brown attraction signs which took us straight to the entrance of the car park. Use the postcode CV34 6AH and your satnav should get you to the main Stratford Road car park, no problem. Once you arrive at the entrance, stewards will direct you to where to park.

Is Warwick Castle near a train station?

Yes, Warwick Castle is only 1 mile from Warwick Railway Station, with direct services from London Marylebone (1hour 45 minutes). It’s a 15-minute walk from the train station to the Castle, so no need to worry about taxis.

Where to park at Warwick Castle?

Parking is plentiful at Warwick Castle but be prepared for a bit of a walk to get to the Castle from the main car park. Because the Castle and grounds are protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and are Grade I listed, parking needs to be a certain distance away to preserve these spaces. We’ve attempted the walk from the car park to the Castle many times with our kids, and it varies in time between 10-20 minutes, depending on how tired they are and how much we need to carry them! Thankfully Warwick Castle run a shuttle bus from the car park to the main entrance, which takes just a few minutes. We walked straight onto the first bus of the day and only had to wait 10 minutes for our return. Absolute lifesaver (plus the kids thought it was very fun)! Parking costs £7 and you can pay via contactless payment at a kiosk as you leave the Castle.

Blue Badge Holder parking is much closer to the Castle and also costs £7.

How much do Warwick Castle tickets cost?

A day ticket for Warwick Castle can be bought in advance with prices starting at £26. The ticket includes all the live shows and attractions; the only think you need to pay extra for is entrance to the Castle dungeons (£6 in advance, £10 on the day) which is suitable for children age 10+. Under 2s and carers go free.

If you live nearby and can make the most of it, there’s a Warwick Castle Annual Pass available from £49 up to £79, which offers between 300 -345 days entry (depending on which level you go for) as well as discounts on short breaks and evening events. Or you can invest in a Merlin Annual Pass (with access to all kinds of attractions including Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures, SEA LIFE centres and more) which starts at £99.

Buy Warwick Castle tickets from £26 at Warwick Castle

What were the opening and closing times for Warwick Castle like?

Warwick Castle opens at 10am during the main season and closing times vary depending on the time of year and light. Typically it’s between 4pm and 5pm, but always check the website for closing times on your chosen visit date.

We arrived at the car park at just a few minutes after 10am and were the third car there. We were lucky enough to walk straight onto the first shuttle bus from the car park to the Castle.

What is there to do at Warwick Castle?

There was a LOT more to do at Warwick Castle than we first thought. In fact, there was so much going on we didn’t have enough time to fit it in to our almost full day at the Castle.

What is there to do inside Warwick Castle?

The Castle itself is awe-inspiring, cue lots of “wows!’ and “oohs” from the kids when they got up close. Built by William the Conqueror in 1068, it packs well over 1,000 years of history into its walls and grounds. We loved exploring the Great Hall and State Rooms, with their incredible displays of armour and weaponry (the child-size suit of armour was a particular hit with our 2!). There are history talks running throughout the day, some specifically aimed at children, and we were disappointed not to make any of these. Definitely next time!

Inside the Castle there’s a walk-through experience called The Kingmaker, which tells the story of the night before The Earl of Warwick’s final battle in the War of the Roses. It features figures in staged settings, alongside audio to set the scene. While our fearless 5 year old loved it, our 8 year old wasn’t quite so keen, as it gets pretty dark and noisy in parts.

Another attraction inside the Castle is the Princess Tower; a sweet, interactive storytelling experience aimed at children aged 3-8. I won’t give too much away, but all the children – aka the princes and princesses – have to help solve a riddle to crown Princess Eve as Queen of Warwick Castle, with plenty of magic involved. There are steep stairs up the Tower, so you won’t be able to take a buggy up there, but if you’re visiting with a preschooler or primary school age child it’s worth a visit. Our 5 year old thought it was very exciting! While The Princess Tower is a free attraction, you do need to book a time slot beforehand as spaces are limited for each session. Just head to the princesses standing outside the Tower entrance and they’ll book you in.

Our 2 really loved exploring the Castle Ramparts, and the view from the top was well worth the steps to get there! We’ve visited Warwick Castle many times, but this was the first time we had taken both children along the Ramparts and they were blown away by it all. There’s a real sense of history as you make your way along the ancient Castle walls and it’s a must-do experience on your visit, as long as your children are old enough. We once made the mistake of attempting it with a 3 year old and the sheer terror of trying to grab her as she made a bid for freedom is not worth repeating!

The Castle Dungeon is an immersive live show set in the real dungeons and tickets can be bought separately for between £6-10. Prior warning: this is a self-proclaimed “gruesome” and “hauntingly thrilling attraction that is not for the faint-hearted”. With an age recommendation of 10+ (with all under 18s accompanied by an adult) we gave it a miss, but we’ve heard great reviews from friends with teens, so if you’re visiting with older kids it may be worth booking.

What is there to do outside at Warwick Castle?

The grounds at Warwick Castle are vast and really beautiful. We were lucky with the weather so were able to have a proper explore. The Peacock Garden, in front of the Conservatory Tea House is well worth a potter around, purely for the fact you’ll get up close with numerous peacocks. Never mind the kids, I thought it was amazing to see these stunning birds casually strutting past (one even came to join us when we were eating lunch, which as you can imagine, caused mild hysteria amongst the kids!).

Close to the entrance of the Castle there’s the Zog Playground, an excellent Zog-themed adventure playground for children up to age 10. If you’re visiting with little kids it’s a dream come true, with a huge choice of swings, slides and climbing frames to burn off all that energy. I liked how each piece of equipment had an age recommendation and how much space there is for different age children to play alongside each other. As well as the Playland there’s the Zog and the Quest for the Golden Star activity trail; a Zog-themed challenge spread out across the grounds, where you can complete each task (like squirting water to put the fire on Zog’s wing out) to graduate from dragon school. There’s also regular Zog meet and greets if your children want to meet the big guy himself.

Next to the Zog Playland is the Horrible Histories maze, which was a big hit with our whole family. Pick up your card at the entrance then work your way through the maze to collect all the stamps from different eras. Heads up, this is a PROPER maze, and I’d recommend keeping close to your kids at all times in case you lose them. It’s not that easy to retrace your steps to find them again! It’s such great fun though, and there’s plenty of interactive activities dotted around the maze to keep kids engaged.

If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s archery sessions available to book for an additional cost, and these are suitable for children age 6 and up.

Buy Warwick Castle tickets from £26 at Warwick Castle

What shows do they have at Warwick Castle?

Warwick Castle run a packed schedule of shows typically between April and September or November, and I honestly can’t recommend these enough.

First, we watched The Legend of the Trebuchet show, where we got to see the Castle’s enormous trebuchet in action. This was properly mind-blowing for the kids (although I think it was my husband who got the most excited by it all!).

In the afternoon we caught The Falconers Quest, which is a dazzling bird of prey display, featuring over 60 birds. We were lucky enough to sit in front of one of the perch’s where some of the birds landed and it really was a very special experience. Having these giant birds swoop overhead was utterly unforgettable.

This show is very popular, so I’d advise getting there at least 10 minutes before it starts – earlier on busy days or if you want to bag one of the wooden benches rather than sit on the grassy hill. We got there early and found a great spot towards the bottom of the hill (top tip: bring a picnic blanket with you), but just as the show started a family with a pushchair sat right in front of us, completely blocking our view. I’d definitely suggest families with pushchairs park at the top of the hill, which is what we did when our youngest was still in her buggy, as numerous groups had to move to find alternative spots once the view was blocked at the bottom of the hill. If it was a very busy day, we would have struggled to find a space to move to, but thankfully it was relatively quiet when we visited.

Finally we visited the Zog Live Show, which brings Julia Donaldson’s story to life on stage. My daughter is a big Zog fan and thought it was very funny. If you’ve got young children, it’s worth arriving early so they can bag a spot on the coveted beanbags at the front of the stage.

Buy Warwick Castle tickets from £26 at Warwick Castle

What type of events do they have at Warwick Castle?

Every year from the end of November to early January, Warwick Castle host Christmas at the Castle. Here the State Rooms are decked out with beautiful Christmas trees and festive lights, and a traditional Christmas food market selling everything from hog roast rolls to mulled wine is set up in the grounds.

If you’re struggling to get into the festive spirit, a trip to Warwick Castle will definitely do the trick. You can book your time slot for all the activities, which means there’s no waiting around. I've been a few times now and it's become a much-loved family Christmas tradition.

Ice skating right next to the castle walls and huge turrets feels really special (it costs from £21 per person). You need to be 3 or over to go on the rink, and there’s a choice of clip-on, double-bladed skates for young children, as well as the traditional skates for older kids and adults. Thankfully skate aids are available – it’s fair to say my husband relied on them as much as the kids! – but be aware these are at an additional cost to the skating and can’t be pre-booked. We thought with such young kids we’d only be out on the ice for 10 minutes or so, but the full 45-minute slot went by really quickly and we all loved every second of it. If you’re not a fan of the ice, there’s a large spectators’ area where you can still get into the festive mood thanks to the cool light show and Christmas music.

The highlight of our visit was, of course, meeting Santa himself. Stories with Santa (from £29 including the standard day ticket) starts with a cute game with the elves, which all the kids got involved with, before we were led through to the most picture-perfect setting inside the castle to meet Santa and Mrs Claus. They were as warm, friendly and wonderful as you’d hope and, while our youngest was a little nervous, our son was very excited to say hello and pose for photos! Each child gets a castle-themed gift, and we all went away with huge smiles on our faces – even our pre-schooler.

As well as this, you can book onto the amazing light trail around the grounds (from £23) and indulge in the offerings from the Christmas food market – toasting our own marshmallows was a big hit but be warned the food and drink prices are high, as seems to be standard at markets like this. As a full day and evening out, the cost does add up, but it’s truly the most perfect Christmas treat all ages will love.

Buy Warwick Castle tickets from £26 at Warwick Castle

Is Warwick Castle dog-friendly?

While you can’t take pet dogs to Warwick Castle, they do of course welcome Assistance dogs. These can go everywhere apart from the Towers and Ramparts and the Castle Dungeon, although Warwick Castle states on its website they are “currently working with Guide Dogs for the Blind, to enable us to introduce reasonable adjustments in these 2 areas.”

Would you recommend visiting Warwick Castle in bad weather?

While there is lots of explore inside the Castle itself, the things which our kids loved the most were the outdoor shows and attractions. While these can be enjoyed in light showers, if it’s really rainy I’d say not so much – plus they run the risk of being cancelled if the weather is particularly bad.

Warwick Castle offers a Rainy Day Promise which means if it rains solidly for more than one hour during your visit – and you’ve booked in advance – you can return for free within the next 60 days. Just make sure your original visit day is eligible for the Rainy Day Promise and check out the terms and conditions before you attempt to claim. This is such a great touch that takes the pressure off navigating the unpredictable Great British weather.

What are food and drink options like at Warwick Castle?

I was expecting typical theme park fast food, but we were all hugely impressed with the food and drink options during our trip to Warwick Castle. There are a few food and drink kiosks dotted around the site, as well as two indoor restaurants; the Conservatory Tea House (a very fancy looking building that looks out across the peacock garden) where you can grab a light lunch or cream tea, and the Undercroft Café (which is tucked away in the lower level of the Castle), which sells hot and cold snacks and offers a takeaway service as well.

My husband and I opted for slices of sourdough pizza from the Pizzeria truck, which came in at £6.80 each for very generously sized square slices. The verdict? Genuinely delicious and far better than we expected. The kids went for fish and chips, which were freshly cooked in front of us at the small kiosk near the trebuchet. The quality was amazing and the portions huge – our 2 couldn’t finish them – and cost us £11.50 each. While this is quite pricey, we couldn’t fault the quality and taste and we felt it was worth every penny.

There are plenty of picnic areas around the grounds, with lots of picnic benches available to use if you prefer to bring your own food. this While this is a great way to save money, we were so impressed with the food quality that I think we’ll be treating ourselves again on our next visit.

What are the other facilities like at Warwick Castle?

Due to the nature of the historical site, toilets are slightly limited, although we never had a problem finding one close enough. Toilets are situated near the Undercroft Café and Conservatory Tea House, as well as in the entrance of the Castle in the Stables Courtyard. I love that there is a toilet block right next to the car park too, very handy after a long drive with kids! You’ll also find accessible toilets here, and baby changing facilities. There’s a private area for mums to breastfeed in the Undercroft and both the Conservatory and Undercroft restaurants have microwaves available for heating baby food or bottles.

Pushchairs can’t be taken into the main house of the Castle, but there are marked pushchair parks outside for you to leave your buggy. Parents of young babies may find a baby carrier easier to get the most of their day.

Buy Warwick Castle tickets from £26 at Warwick Castle

Overall verdict of Warwick Castle: is it worth it for families?

Definitely! Warwick Castle has so much to offer families with children of all ages, from the historic Castle itself to the amazing live shows and the gorgeous grounds complete with fancy peacocks. Whether they have an interest in history of not, its impossible for kids not to get swept up in the magic of visiting a real Castle in such fantastic condition. I think it offers so much for the entrance price and the fact that we are regular visitors goes to show how much we genuinely live this as a family day out.

Buy Warwick Castle tickets from £26 at Warwick Castle

Visit the Warwick Castle website
