Heatwaves can be great fun for kids — they can splash about in paddling pools, build sandcastles on the beach, and enjoy nice weather in the park. But too much sun can be harmful for little ones, and even the most attentive parents can find themselves with sunburned kids.

Since kids have thinner, more delicate skin, and spend a lot more time having fun in the sun than adults tend to, they are particularly vulnerable to the sun’s effects. These can range from a bit of sunburn and dehydration to skin cancer and heat exhaustion.

Many parents think they’re doing the right thing by slathering their children with a high SPF or popping a blanket over their baby’s pram, but not all sun protection strategies are created equal.

Some common parenting habits, like using sun cream on under-six-month-olds or relying on cloudy skies as cover, can actually do more harm than good. And others, like forgetting to reapply sun cream or using last year’s bottle, can leave your child exposed to sun damage without you even realising.

We’ve collated some of the most common mistakes parents make when it comes to sun safety as well as how to avoid them. Whether it’s choosing the right kind of sun cream, understanding why shade trumps SPF for young babies, or knowing when it’s just too hot to play outside, we break down what every parent needs to know to keep their child safe in the sun.

1. Staying in the sun too long or at the wrong time

The hottest part of the day tends to be from 11am to 3pm, which is when levels of UV radiation from the sun are also highest.

This is the time to avoid playing in direct sun. Instead, keep outdoor play to the early morning or late afternoon, and stay in the shade during peak UV hours. Or swap any high intensity play for more relaxed activities in the garden, water play, or indoor alternatives.

Dr. Jonathan Kentley, a consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson, tells MadeForMums that it’s best to encourage kids to take regular breaks from being in direct sunlight, especially in the middle of the day.

2. Allowing babies to be exposed to sun

Babies under six months shouldn’t be exposed to direct sunlight at all. Their skin is thinner, produces less melanin to protect against UV rays, and burns much more easily than older children or adults.

And sunscreen doesn’t mean they can go in the sun, either. It isn’t recommended to use sun cream on babies under six months old because their delicate skin is more likely to react to lotions, which can cause irritation or rashes.

3. Forgetting that kids still need sun protection on cloudy days

It might feel counterintuitive to get the suncream and hats out when the sun isn’t out, but it might be necessary.

According to Cancer Research UK, UV rays from the sun can be strong enough to damage your skin from mid-March to mid-October — even if it’s cloudy and cold. 90% of UV rays can pass through clouds, so it’s best to check the UV index on your weather app and use adequate sun protection whenever UV levels are at a three or above.

You can also use the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s UV rays are at their strongest, so you should take extra care to protect your family’s skin.

4. Thinking that kids with darker skin don’t need protection from the sun

People with darker skin are less likely to burn because their skin contains more melanin, a pigment that helps to protect against UV rays. Melanin absorbs UV and scatters it, providing some natural protection against sun damage.

However, this doesn’t mean people with more melanin are immune to the harmful effects of the sun. All skin types require sun protection to prevent long-term harm.

5. Using out-of-date suncream

Sun-protective ingredients in suncream can degrade over time, so using expired suncream can leave children unprotected.

Always check the expiry date on your sunscreen bottles — they tend to last for two to three years.

Check out. MadeForMums’ list of best suncreams for babies and children.

6. Not using enough suncream

The NHS recommends that adults should use six to eight tablespoons’ worth of suncream to protect their whole body, but most people use less than the recommended amounts, which limits the amount of protection they get.

Apply suncream generously, and top it up every two hours, especially if you and your children are swimming or sweating.

7. Thinking suncream alone is enough

Dr. Jonathan says that although sunscreen is essential, it shouldn’t be your only defence against the sun.

Protective clothing, especially those made from UV-blocking fabric, as well as hats and sunglasses are great to provide physical barriers from the sun’s rays.

“Suncream is an indispensable tool in sun protection, but it should be part of a layered defence, not the only line,” Jonathan says.

“Think of it like a seatbelt in a car: essential, but far more effective when combined with airbags and good driving practices. Using sunscreen alongside physical barriers helps ensure that children can enjoy the outdoors safely without compromising their future skin health.”

8. Not dressing your child or baby properly

Dressing children in dark, tight, or synthetic clothing can make them hotter and more prone to heat rash. Whereas light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibres are much better for keeping them cool in the sun.

Likewise, using a heavy blanket to shade a pram can cause the temperature inside to rise dangerously, putting babies at risk of overheating. It is safer to use a light, breathable cover or a purpose-made sunshade, and always check the baby’s temperature regularly.

9. Forgetting a hat

A wide-brimmed hat that protects the ears and back of the neck is important on hot, sunny days, Jonanthan says.

Whereas leaving children’s faces, ears, and necks exposed to the sun can increase the risk of sunburn on these sensitive areas.

10. Forgetting that eyes need sun protection too

“Sunglasses aren’t just a summer fashion accessory,” says Paramdeep Bilkhu, Clinical Adviser at The College of Optometrists. “They play an essential role in protecting eyes from harmful UV rays. Parents often remember to apply suncream and put a hat on their child, but they may not realise that UV rays can still reach the eyes and cause damage over time.”

Children’s eyes are very sensitive to UV rays, which can cause long-term damage and lead to conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration.

Plus, sunglasses can help to ease hay fever symptoms, because they physically block pollen from reaching the eyes.

11. Buying cheap, ineffective sunglasses

Even if you do remember to pop a pair of sunglasses on your child, they might not offer as much protection as you’d like. A recent report by Which? found that many cheap kids’ sunglasses bought online didn’t provide enough protection to make them safe to wear — and none of the pairs met the requirements for them to be legally sold in the UK.

Instead, buy your kids sunglasses from recognised brands, check for a CEO or UKCA mark or UV400 protection, and avoid cheap online products.

MadeForMums has a list of where to buy safe kids’ sunglasses here.

12. Letting their kids get a tan

Some parents believe that slowly exposing children to the sun will help them build up a tan to eventually tolerate sun better.

This isn’t a good idea — children’s skin contains less melanin than adults’, and gradual exposure can still cause burning which increases the risk of skin cancer later in life.

13. Forgetting to hydrate

Drinking plenty of water helps to avoid dehydration, which increases risks of heatstroke and heat exhaustion.

Try to give your child plenty of water and avoid juice and sugary drinks, if possible, for the sake of their teeth and sugar crashes.

If your baby hasn’t weaned yet, they don’t need water — the NHS says that breastmilk is the only food or drink babies need in their first six months. They may want more milk during hot weather. Formula-fed babies might need small sips of boiled (and then cooled!) water during hot weather, on top of milk feeds.

Once your baby has weaned, they can have sips of water, usually with their meals. This doesn’t have to be cooled, boiled water once they are over six months.

14. Not teaching kids about sun safety

If children don’t understand why sun protection is important, they are less likely to follow sun safety guidelines themselves as they get older and more independent.

Teaching them simple rules, like the shadow rule and how powerful the sun can be at peak times, helps them learn when to seek shade.

The sun is a great part of summer, but can be dangerous to children, leaving them vulnerable to sunburn, heatstroke, and dehydration. But by avoiding these common mistakes, you can keep your kids healthy and comfortable in the sun.

With the gorgeous weather we’ve been having this summer, many parents are letting their kids run free in the back garden. Far from the preparation time and mess that some indoor activities like crafting necessitate, garden play is a great, low effort way to entertain the kids while giving them the health benefits of vitamin D, fresh air and exercise.

But gardens can be unexpectedly hazardous, especially for kids, who might not have the knowledge or instincts to avoid dangerous situations. Slippery patios, an unlocked shed, and ponds might not seem like obvious hazards until you have excitable, inquisitive kids around.

Alex Essex, managing director and patio expert at Patio Black Spot Removal, says: "With a little preparation and awareness, you can enjoy a beautiful and safe garden this summer, but many people underestimate just how physically demanding and potentially hazardous gardens can be.”

Alex shared some of the most common garden injuries and how to avoid them so you can keep kids safe and enjoy your garden without fretting this summer.

Slips and falls

Wet paving, sealers on surfaces, and the build-up of organic growth and algae in winter can all contribute to slipping in the garden — especially if you have little children running on them.

Prevention tips for slipping include:

Clean patios regularly to remove moss, algae, and debris.

If you’re re-doing the garden, choose slip-resistant paving and matte or low-sheen sealers on smooth surfaces.

If you can’t replace slippy surfaces, use outdoor mats instead to provide some grip.

Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.

Plant-related injuries

Whether it’s a thorn prick, nettle sting, or cut from a sharp holly leaf, plants can be a hazard in the garden, too. And black nightshade, which can be deadly if eaten, tends to thrive in hot weather.

Plus, did you know that plant sap can sometimes be dangerous?

“Some garden plants, like euphorbia, giant hogweed, and fig trees, release sap that can irritate skin or cause blistering, especially when exposed to sunlight,” Alex says.

Prevention tips include:

Keep prickly plants trimmed and well-managed.

Learn to recognise common hazardous plants and keep kids away from any in your garden.

Wash any skin exposed to sap immediately with soap and water.

Power tools and machinery

“Lawnmowers, trimmers, and other electric or petrol-powered tools are essential for garden maintenance but can be extremely dangerous if misused,” Alex says. If children get their hands on garden equipment, fall on it, or run into the path of someone using a power tool, it can spell disaster.

Prevention tips include:

Keep children at a safe distance when using power tools.

Have children wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and footwear if there’s garden work going on.

Lock sheds, garages, or wherever else you keep gardening equipment

What else should parents look out for?

Alex says that one often-overlooked danger is structural wear and tear in gardens.

For example, “uneven or sinking paving can shift underfoot and lead to sudden falls. Poor installation methods show overtime and can be made worse by aggressive pressure washing and freezing winters,” he says.

“Regular inspections (especially after extreme weather) and timely repairs are crucial for safety. Investing in well-laid, high-quality materials and the correct preventative maintenance not only reduces risk but also extends the life of your garden features, saving money and injury in the long run,” he says.

Gardens are brilliant places for kids to explore, play and get their daily dose of fresh air – but keeping them safe does take a little forward thinking. With just a few tweaks to your outdoor setup, you can enjoy a summer of fun and not have to worry about first aid.

Read more:

Garden safety for kids

Top common poisonous plants in UK gardens

10 of the best outdoor toys and garden games for kids and families

So, your baby's first tooth has arrived, what now? It's exciting, adorable and a hugely important milestone in their development. It's also a great time to kick off a good brushing routine. The enamel on your baby's teeth is thinner than yours, making it more at risk of decay. And considering the fact that milk contains sugar, you'll need to clean their teeth (or tooth) regularly.

Our expert dentist Dr Manrina Rhode shares, "As soon as a baby gets their first milk tooth it’s good to get in the habit of wiping it with a soft cloth twice a day, morning and night. Once a baby is able to hold a brush you can give them a soft child’s toothbrush for them to chew on. Best to use an age-appropriate brush."

Best toothbrushes for babies and toddlers at a glance:

Best electric toothbrush for babies: Brush-Baby BabySonic Electronic Toothbrush, £11.19

Best for teething babies: Brush-Baby Chewable Toothbrush, £7.99

Best for first set of teeth: The Brushies Baby & Toddler Toothbrush, £8.50

Best for protective shield: MAM Teach Me Toothbrush Set, £9

Best long-lasting electric toothbrush: Brush-Baby Wild Ones Sonic Toothbrush, £29.99

Best budget electric toothbrush: Colgate Kids Extra Soft Battery Powered Toothbrush, £8

Best for travel: Aquafresh Little Teeth Children’s Toothbrush, £1.65

Best for sustainability: Wild & Stone Bamboo Kids Toothbrush, £5.99

Best recommended by dentists: Oral-B Kids Electric Toothbrush, £50

Best budget buy: Boots Kids Toothbrush, £0.50

With young babies, alternatively, you can start them off with a chewable brush. These very early toothbrushes clean teeth, massage and soothe teething gums, and means babies get used to having their teeth brushed. Or you may decide to go straight onto a standard toothbrush. It's best to invest in a small-headed one with soft bristles. Just a small smear of children’s toothpaste will be enough. For safety, she says, "Initially let the babies chew on the brush, then introduce toothpaste, then start to brush your baby's teeth for them and then let them hold the brush and chew on it. Eventually, they will be able to do it themselves under your supervision."

According to the Oral Health Foundation, "Tooth decay is almost entirely preventable, yet it remains the number one reason for childhood hospital admissions for general anaesthesia in the UK".

One tip worth trying for children reluctant to brush their teeth is to use a toothbrushing app (we have one detailed in the list below) to make brushing fun. Maybe try hanging a calendar in the bathroom and marking a reward star each time they brush. It may require some persuading and encouragement at the start for some children, but over time they will have a well-developed brushing routine.

Other useful bathroom products for kids include baby and children's toiletries and children's towels.

Best toothbrushes for babies

1. It's up to you whether you use toothpaste, but if you do, ensure it's a fluoride-free one. Babies do not need fluoride until they are two years old.

Designed to fit your baby's mouth, there's no problem reaching the molar teeth, and if you cool it in the fridge and dab it with some teething gel, it's great for sore gums too.

As your little one chews away, the toothbrush massages tender gums and gently cleans any teeth that are poking their way through.

Available from: Amazon

What to consider when buying a toothbrush for your baby or toddler

Age suitability – "Age recommendations will be indicated on the packaging, you can’t go wrong" shares expert doctor Manrina Rhodes. Always check the packaging to get an idea of the appropriate toothbrush for your child.

Colours and themes – There are lots of colour and character theme variations your child can select from. Your child might be able to select a toothbrush with their favourite cartoon character on it or simply their favourite colour – all to make toothbrushing a bit more fun!

Function – There are different kinds of toothbrushes depending on what stage your child is at. Our list has manual toothbrushes, as well as electric and soft teething toothbrushes, too.

Safety – For babies, there are things to look out for that help the toothbrush be safer. One of the toothbrushes on our list has a guard to prevent the toothbrush being pushed too far into the mouth.

How we tested these products

When testing these baby and toddler toothbrushes with home testers, we asked them to report back on effectiveness, design, potential length of use, and whether they thought it was worth the money.

Our Best lists are compiled by qualified and experienced parenting journalists. They rely on a number of sources, including our independent reviews, testing undertaken during the MadeForMums Awards, and feedback from our home testing panel and Top Testers Club. Each year thousands of products are put through their paces by hundreds of parents across the country on behalf of MadeForMums, to ensure we’re bringing you honest and true reviews and recommendations.

Our list is not an ordered ranking from 1-10, instead it is a carefully selected group of tried-and-tested products, each of which we believe is best for a different situation or requirement. We don’t just tell you what is best, we help you discover what is best for your family.

Keep your home cooler during a UK heatwave without breaking the bank with these 5 smart tips – plus clever product picks for babies, kids and hot nights.

With temperatures soaring across the UK, keeping your home cool can feel like a losing battle at the moment.

Many houses in the UK aren’t designed for extreme heat, and are built to keep heat in, not out — which is lovely in winter, but less so when your children are red-faced and sweaty by 10am.

But there are ways you can keep your home cool, using both quick fixes and smart swaps. We’ve rounded up the best heatwave hacks for parents, plus some handy products to help keep things chill.

Whether you’re trying to settle a baby in a stuffy nursery or juggle work, parenting and sleep during a heatwave, these tricks might just save your sanity this summer.

1. Block out the sunlight early

It might feel counterintuitive, but opening your windows as soon as the sun comes up can actually be worse for maintaining a liveable temperature in your home. Sun streaming through windows can raise the temperature significantly.

The better option is to shut curtains and blinds early – ideally before 9am – and keep windows closed during the hottest part of the day (usually 11am–3pm), particularly in rooms that get a lot of sun.

Blackout blinds work best at keeping rooms cooler. They also keep rooms darker which can be a lifesaver during light summer nights, especially if your kids rise with the sun. Look for thermal or reflective backing for extra protection.

MadeForMums reviewers loved the Gro Anywhere Blackout Blind with its suction cups that can be attached to any window — perfect for renters or families who like to travel.

2. Create a DIY cross-breeze using windows and fans

Good airflow is key to keeping a space cool. You can create a cross-breeze in your home by strategically opening windows and doors: in the evening, when the outside air finally starts to cool, open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a cross-breeze. Prop open internal doors to help air circulate through hallways and bedrooms, and if you have an attic or loft hatch, open that so that the hot air rises out of your living spaces.

Of course, be mindful of safety around open windows, particularly if you have young children. Ensure windows are secure or fitted with childproof locks if needed.

3. Use fans strategically

Fans are a quick way to provide some relief in hot weather, and you can boost their effect with a few tricks.

If you have two windows/doors opposite each other, you can increase any cross-breezes you’ve created. Place a fan near a window or door, facing into the room to draw cooler air in, and another fan facing out of the other window/door to suck warmer air out.

Some people use the “fan and ice” trick, too. To do this, place bowl of ice or frozen water bottles in front of a fan to create a mini air-con effect as the air is cooled as it passes over the ice.

If you’re in the market for a fan, MadeForMums has compiled a list of the best tower fans this summer.

Some of the best tower fans offer features like sleep modes, oscillation, and quiet operation, making them suitable for use in bedrooms and living spaces. Bladeless fans can be a safe choice around young children.

4. Rethink your bedding

It’s obvious that fleece bedding and 13.5 tog duvets aren’t the best for heatwaves, but there are other changes you can make to your bedding to make sleeping in the heat slightly easier.

Bedding made from breathable, natural fabrics like cotton or bamboo can make a noticeable difference to sleep quality for you and the kids. Lightweight cellular blankets are ideal for babies in hot weather, as they have small holes to avoid overheating.

If you can’t buy new bedding right now, try using a spare sheet or a duvet cover without a duvet instead of a blanket.

If you're co-sleeping or still breastfeeding, it's even more important to keep things cool. Look for moisture-wicking cot sheets and pyjamas that help regulate temperature.

For older kids and grown-ups, try putting your pillowcase in the freezer an hour before bed for a nice cool bed.

5. Switch off the heat sources you don’t notice

Electronics and appliances give off more heat than you might realise, and in a heatwave, every degree counts.

Try switching off gadgets at the wall when they’re not in use, especially TVs, computers and kitchen appliances. Avoid using the oven or hob if you can – now’s the time for cold pasta salads, air fryer dinners, or picnics.

And don’t forget lightbulbs: swapping halogen bulbs for energy-efficient LEDs can reduce heat buildup, especially in smaller rooms.

6. Stay hydrated — and wet

Staying hydrated is essential in hot weather, as it helps the body regulate temperature, so encourage everyone in your household to drink water regularly throughout the day.

Taking cold showers, spraying yourself and the kids with water, or draping a wet towel over your shoulders can also be very effective at keeping you cool.

Keeping your home cool during a UK heatwave can feel like a full-time job, but with a few simple swaps – and the right kit – it’s doable. And while we can’t promise a good night’s sleep for everyone, we can help make things that bit more bearable.

Read more:

How hot does it have to be for UK schools and nurseries to close?

Fewer children in the UK’s most deprived areas are receiving the HPV vaccine – a simple, one-dose jab that protects against several types of cancer – and health experts are sounding the alarm.

New data from Public Health Scotland shows a 20% gap in HPV vaccine uptake between children in the UK’s wealthiest and most deprived areas. Among Year 8 pupils in the most affluent communities, 82.1% were vaccinated, but that drops to just 59.9% in the poorest areas.

The HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine is offered to all 12–13-year-olds across the UK. Since the programme began in 2008, it has been a major public health success, dramatically reducing cases of cervical cancer, and not a single case has been found in women who were fully vaccinated as girls.

While these figures are from Scotland, health professionals believe the trend reflects a nationwide issue, with rising post-pandemic health inequalities leaving many children at greater risk.

What does the HPV vaccine protect against?

HPV is a common virus that’s usually spread through sexual contact. While most people will get HPV at some point, some types can cause cancers of the cervix, throat, penis and anus. The vaccine is most effective when given before teenagers are exposed to the virus.

Originally offered to girls, the vaccine has been available to boys since 2019 and protects not just the individual child, but the wider community by stopping the spread.

Speaking to the BBC, Dr Claire Cameron from Public Health Scotland said, “No cervical cancer cases have been detected in women who have been fully vaccinated.”

But she also warned: “Inequalities are increasing since the Covid pandemic... this virus can affect everybody and we want everybody to be vaccinated so they can be protected.”

Why are fewer kids getting vaccinated?

Experts say the reasons for falling uptake are complex and linked to both social and educational challenges post-Covid.

Dr Cameron told the BBC: “We think it’s maybe something to do with vaccine confidence not being as high as it has been. Maybe people’s engagement with healthcare has changed, but also we offer this vaccine in schools, and we know that there has been a change in how young people engage with education, and there are challenges there.”

Nationally, the average coverage has dipped slightly to 71.5%, but the gap between wealthier and poorer areas is what’s most concerning to health professionals.

School workshops help reduce fear and boost understanding

At Castlebrae High School in Edinburgh, researchers from the University of Edinburgh’s BioQuarter have been running science-based workshops to help students feel more confident about getting the jab – and it’s already making a difference.

Dom Cairns-Gibson, who leads the project, told the BBC: “We noticed there was quite a lack of knowledge on HPV and a lot of people conflated it with HIV, so they just didn’t necessarily know what it was, why they needed to get it.”

The sessions give kids the chance to ask questions, see how the virus works under a microscope, and learn how vaccines protect communities.

What parents should do next

If your child missed their HPV jab at school, it’s not too late to get them protected. You can speak to your school nurse or contact your local GP or NHS immunisation team to arrange a catch-up appointment.

The vaccine is offered as a single injection and is available to all children aged 12–13 in the UK. It's free, safe, and one of the most effective ways to protect your child against cancer in the future.

As Dr Cameron told the BBC, “This virus can affect everybody – and we want everybody to be vaccinated.”

Quick facts: The HPV vaccine for kids

What is it? A vaccine that protects against the Human Papillomavirus, which can lead to several types of cancer.

Who gets it? All Year 8 pupils in the UK – both boys and girls.

Where is it given? Usually at school; catch-up clinics are available through the NHS.

Why does it matter? It’s already helping to eliminate cervical cancer – and protects others, too.

What if my child missed it? Contact your school nurse, GP or local NHS immunisation service.

Read more:

Drowning Prevention Week: how your child can learn to stay safe around water

Mums still face pregnancy discrimination at work, but a new free legal service launches to help

Leeds hospital trust faces fresh calls for independent maternity care inquiry

What your child eats goes through their mouth as well as their stomach, but some supposedly healthy foods can be harmful to teeth.

Family Health

School and family

Added sugar, added salt, preservatives, ultra-processed foods — there’s a million and one things to look out for in your child’s diet. But one thing you might forget to think about is the impact of diet on their teeth.

Everything your child eats goes through their mouth, so it’s important for food to be good for their teeth as well as their stomach.

You probably know that sugary foods are bad for your teeth. But some foods that you might think of as healthy can be harmful for young teeth, too.

MadeForMums spoke to a dietitian and a dentist about how to feed your child to protect their teeth as well as provide a healthy diet.

Sugary foods cause tooth decay

When we eat or drink, plaque forms on our teeth. Bacteria that cause decay live in that plaque and convert the sugar into food and drink into acid. Over time, this acid breaks down the enamel on our teeth and eventually the inner parts of the teeth too, leading to cavities.

This doesn’t mean you have to cut sugar out of your child’s diet completely. It’s more about how many times a day they eat sugary foods, rather than how much they eat.

“Any food or drink consumed (other than water) results in acid attacks in the mouth. If you eat three times in a day, these acid attacks are limited to three daily. If there is frequent snacking throughout the day, this results in multiple acid attacks and a higher risk of tooth decay,” says Theviya Naveenan, a London-based dentist and former committee member of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry.

Lucy Upton, a registered dietitian specialising in children’s nutrition based in the Cotswolds, told MadeForMums: “The highest risk foods for tooth decay include sugar-sweetened drinks, fruit juice, and high-sugar foods like sweets, chocolate, pastries, ice cream/lollies, cakes, and even some cereals.”

Some foods are more sugary than you might think

But it’s not just the usual suspects that contain tooth-threatening sugar.

All foods that contain sugar can cause tooth decay — even whole foods like fruit.

“Foods high in natural sugars, or with a sticky consistency that easily clings to teeth, such as dried fruit and raisins, can also pose a risk for tooth decay,” Lucy says.

And foods that are marketed as “healthy” are often still high in sugar to make them palatable for kids.

“Parents will find that many children’s snacks or foods use marketing claims like ‘no added sugar’ or ‘only natural sugars’ but are still high in sugar. Snack bars, cereal bars, and many dried fruit or jerky snacks can be included in this,” Lucy says.

“While I never say these foods can’t be included as part of a balanced diet, I would suggest parents consider how often these foods are on offer, and prioritise other nutritious snacks which are lower in sugar where possible,” she adds.

"I really want to emphasise that fruit does not need to be demonised, and offers a wide range of benefits to children from fibre to essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I encourage parents to focus on whole fruit options wherever possible, as the natural sugars in whole fruits are still contained in their cell walls, so do not act in the same way as added sugars."

How to reduce tooth decay via diet

Lucy says, “When considering sugar intake, I encourage parents to be aware of guidelines and to approach the issue pragmatically.”

Dietician Lucy and dentist Theviya have plenty of tips to help protect your children’s teeth:

Try to offer your children only water and milk. If your child needs help cutting out sugary drinks, Theviya recommends Air Up bottles, which use scent to make plain water taste flavoured.

If your kids are drinking juice or fizzy drinks, limit them to one portion (100-120ml) a day — and consider diluting to 1 part juice and 10 parts water. Have them use a straw, so less sugar reaches their teeth.

Avoid your child eating or drinking anything other than water within an hour of going to bed. This is because acid can sit on the teeth for much longer overnight.

Try to reduce the amount of sugar in your child’s diet. Theviya recommends only giving children sweet food and drinks twice a week, but Lucy says that making healthy swaps can help, too. For example, consider tooth-friendly healthy snacks like cheese or hummus with crackers, peanut butter with oatcakes, or unsweetened yogurt with oats and nut butter.

Check food labels to help you avoid buying high-sugar foods. Sugar may not be listed as ‘sugar’ on food labels — it comes in other forms, like glucose, honey, syrups, fruit juice concentrates, maltose, dextrose, and fructose. The higher up in the ingredient list, the more of an ingredient is found in a food. You can also look at the ‘of which sugars’ part of the nutrition table. Low sugar foods have less than 5 grams of sugar per 100 grams of food.

If your kids are having food or drinks that are higher in sugar, offer them with meals rather than grazing on them during the day. “This reduces the frequency of acid attacks on the teeth, and the increased saliva production during meals helps to neutralise acids and rinse away food particles,” Lucy says.

General dental health tips for parents

“It goes without saying, but establishing a good routine with twice-daily teeth brushing is key! I know from personal experience this can be tricky with toddlers, but routine, songs and modelling are all good strategies to help,” Lucy says.

She also recommends switching from bottles and sipping cups to open cups or straws after your child turns one, to protect their teeth.

Theviya has more tips, too:

Wait 30 minutes to an hour before brushing children’s teeth after eating or drinking anything (except water).

Don’t rinse toothpaste away after brushing — spit the excess out, but let the fluoride sit on the teeth.

Chew sugar-free gum after eating or drinking to help saliva flow and wash sugar away.

Book a visit to the dentist for a checkup when your child’s teeth come through — this helps them get comfortable at the dentist, and not just associate it with pain.

Use disclosing tablets to check children over the age of six are brushing well. They are chewed after brushing at night and stain areas that have been missed while brushing.

For children who struggle with brushing, neurodiverse children or children with sensory difficulties with brushing, consider using non-foaming, flavour free toothpastes, and different brush types.

These can include: a silicone finger brush, a Dr. Barman brush (touches all three surfaces of the teeth at the same time), or a U-shaped toothbrush.

Pics: Getty

Read more:

When should you take your baby to the dentist?

11 of the best toothbrushes for babies, toddlers and children – tried and tested

10 essentials for keeping tiny teeth healthy

What is melatonin? And is it safe for kids? MadeForMums' resident GP tells parents everything they need to know about this sleep medication.

Family Health

School and family

If you’ve ever found yourself searching “How to help my children get to sleep” at 2am, you’re not alone — and chances are, you’ve come across melatonin.

Melatonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in our bodies that helps your body prepare for sleep. It’s also available as a supplement or medication and can help with sleep problems or getting over jet lag.

Some parents consider giving it to their children if they are having problems struggling to fall asleep or to stay asleep through the night, but unlike countries such as the USA, it’s currently only available via prescription in the UK.

“All melatonin in the UK is monitored and strictly controlled, because melatonin can interact with other medicines and can lead to side effects,” says Dr Philippa Kaye, a London-based GP who specialises in paediatrics and gynaecology.

It’s only safe to give your child melatonin if they have a prescription and you follow the prescription guidelines. Here’s how melatonin works and when it might be right for your child.

What is melatonin?

“Melatonin is a hormone that the body produces naturally, from the pineal gland in the brain. It plays an important role in the body’s circadian rhythms — the waking and sleeping cycle of the body,” Dr. Philippa says.

Levels of melatonin increase as it gets darker, telling your body that it’s time to sleep, and decrease again when the body is exposed to natural light, telling your body to wake up.

Taking a melatonin supplement or medication, made from a synthetic version of the hormone, adds to the amount naturally in your body. This can help some people fall asleep more quickly and be less likely to wake up during the night.

It can come in tablet, capsule, gummy, or liquid form, and usually takes one to two hours to kick in.

It’s mainly prescribed to treat short-term sleep problems (usually for 1-4 weeks, but sometimes up to 13 weeks), but is also used for longer periods in children and adults with long-term sleep problems.

Is melatonin safe for children?

Melatonin is generally considered safe for short term use — but there hasn’t been much research on long-term use or use in children. There’s no set minimum age for taking melatonin, but certain melatonin medications are only licensed for children from the age of two, so check with your doctor before using them with your kids.

“All medications have the potential to interact with other medications or with a health condition that you have,” Dr. Philippa adds, including melatonin.

So, it’s best to follow prescription instructions if giving melatonin to your child.

“Do not give more than is prescribed and if you are concerned that your child may have taken melatonin where they should not have, or too many tablets please seek urgent medical advice,” Dr. Philippa says.

“They may also have side effects. For melatonin, side effects can include sleepiness, joint aches and pains, anxiety and may affect mood.”

Melatonin doses for kids will be less than for adults, so be careful not to give them too much. Melatonin overdoses aren’t dangerous most of the time, according to Harvard Health Publishing, but can lead to excessive sleepiness, headaches, nausea, and agitation.

When is melatonin recommended for kids?

Melatonin may be given to kids if they struggle to get to sleep because of a medical condition or if they have learning or behavioural issues. Or they might be on a medication which might make it harder for them to get to sleep. For example, children with ADHD who take stimulant medications might be prescribed melatonin to help them sleep.

“A melatonin prescription is generally started by a specialist after ensuring that all other measures, such as good sleep hygiene, are being carried out,” Dr. Philippa says.

Harvard Health Publishing says that most children don’t need it to get a good night’s sleep, so parents should try to get sleep routines in place before turning to melatonin.

Doctors may also look for other issues, like restless sleep caused by iron deficiency, or sleep apnoea, before prescribing melatonin for kids.

If your child is prescribed melatonin, “it is recommended to give it to them 30-60 minutes before bedtime, perhaps when starting their bedtime routine so that it works just at the right time,” Dr. Philippa says.

When to talk to a doctor about your child’s sleep

“It is normal for sleep to vary with age — a newborn baby will sleep more than a ten-year-old, and might also wake up more often for feeding,” Dr. Philippa says.

“Insomnia is often short term and can be related to various conditions, for example your child might not sleep well if they have a heavy cold, or if they have anxiety about an upcoming exam,” she adds.

“If your child is not sleeping and it is causing them distress or impacting their ability to function at home or school, please speak to your doctor,” Dr. Philippa says.

Good sleep hygiene is important for children, regardless of melatonin use — Dr. Philippa recommends not having screens in bedrooms, making sure the room is a good temperature and not too light, and having a good bedtime routine.

Please note: this advice is not personalised or meant to replace individual advice given to you about your child by your doctor or medical team. As always, if you are concerned about your child’s health then please seek medical advice.

Sleep secrets every mum should know

When your toddler won't go to bed

How to get an overtired baby to sleep

What happens when menopause meets motherhood? Katie Taylor, author of Midlife Matters and perimenopausal mother to 4 teenagers, shares how to talk to your kids about the change, juggle clashing hormones—and stay sane when everyone's having a meltdown

The average age that a woman gives birth to her first child in the UK has been increasing every year since the 1970s and currently stands at 32, according to the most recent stats from the ONS1. With so many more opportunities in education, the workplace and a desire to enjoy everything life has to offer before babies, it's no surprise the age has risen.

But what happens when you've had your babies in your 30s or 40s and they're still young children or teenagers when you start experiencing your first symptoms of perimenopause or menopause? Perimenopause usually starts for women in their mid 40s, an age when many women still have kids, often teenagers, at home – and when perimenopause meets puberty that's a lot of hormones flying around one house!

To help you navigate the chaos of mood swings, night sweats and school runs while going through one of life's most unpredictable changes, we spoke to Katie Taylor, author of Midlife Matters and founder of The Latte Lounge, which provides supports for women going through perimenopause and menopause. Here are her top survival tips for perimenopausal parents...

1. Put yourself first

"Factor time in for YOU. There are a lot of people who rely on you, so you need to feel as well, as strong and as happy as you can be to support everyone who loves you.

"Self-care is not selfish, it is vital as we cannot look after all those that rely on us unless we are firing from all cylinders. So make sure you include some time to walk in nature, meet up with a friend/family member, look after your nutrition and find ways to destress – be that reading a book, having a bath, going for a swim/bike ride/run/yoga class etc.

And if you need to talk to someone in the same boat, join The Latte Lounge Facebook group where you can connect and feel supported by and with like-minded women."

2. Initiate change at work and home

"If you are working full time and are struggling in the workplace then ask what adjustments they can make, perhaps flexi-working/working from home more, especially if you haven’t slept much the night before.

"Be a menopause campaigner/champion in the workplace – know your rights (there's a chapter in my book about this) and talk to your employer about how they can support you to stay in your job.

"If you have a partner, ask them to help more with the kids when you are having a tough day/hour/week. Leave Midlife Matters open on the Menopause chapter on a coffee table so that your family can read and re-read what you are going through!"

3. Tell your family what you're going through

"Be totally open and honest. Obviously it will depend on the age of your children but those in secondary school and above should be able to understand.

"I would find a quiet and calm time to sit down with the entire family and explain that you are going through perimenopause or menopause and what that means is that your hormone levels are fluctuating, which can result in a range of symptoms that can have an impact on your physical and mental health.

"When I was going through perimenopause I experienced extremely low mood, insomnia, brain fog, exhaustion and loss of joy. I would encourage your family to read the list of symptoms on page 17 of the book and explain to them how they can help you and what you need from them. For example, if you have had very little sleep and are struggling with the demands of your family life, ask your family to help you with the various chores that need doing and/or to give you some time out for a rest."

4. Focus on things you can control

"When I was going through my most troubling symptoms of perimenopause aged 43-47 I had four teenage kids. It was incredibly challenging as all of our hormones collided at the same time and it became quite an explosive/pressure cooker type environment.

"Thank goodness for my husband who is the most level headed, calm person I’ve ever met! However, joking aside, this is the reason why so many marriages can break down without the right support in place. The simple answer is that you can’t pour from an empty cup, and you also can’t do much about your kids' hormones, but you can do a lot about your own.

"Knowledge is power and I would advise that everyone fills out a symptom check list, which you can download here and read the resources and information in Midlife Matters and on our website. If you are struggling go and speak to your GP or a menopause specialist.

"HRT was a lifesaver for me and for most women who need and want it, it can help with pretty much all of those troubling symptoms. However, you'll also need to find time for resistance training to protect your bones and eat a nutritious gut-friendly diet that is appropriate for your age group. Plus, finding ways to reduce your stress and improve your sleep."

Midlife Matters by Katie Taylor and published by DK Red is available to buy here at Amazon.

If you've never heard of a 'baby sprinkle', then allow us to shed light on this wonderful, low-cost and low-fuss alternative to baby showers.

While there's no doubt baby showers are a great way of celebrating your upcoming newborn with the ones you love, not all of us enjoy standing under a spotlight. Plus, what if it's your second baby and you don't want to do that planning all over again?

That's where baby sprinkles come in. These smaller, more intimate affairs are bound to suit those who just want a bit of time with close family and friends before the baby comes. They don't put as much of an emphasis on games, and gifts are far less essential, although still encouraged!

Below, we've put together a guide to what you can expect from a baby sprinkle, as well as answering your questions, like what to ask for and who to invite.

To help us help you, we've also partnered with baby registry platform MyCrib. This site is a great, fuss-free way of assembling your dream wish list before sending it out to family and friends.

You can pull items from the platform's handy curated recommendations, or paste URLs from any external site, which means there really is no limit to what you can get for your new baby.

For more details, check out our guide to what a baby registry is, plus the best baby shower gifts.

What is a baby sprinkle?

What is the difference between a baby sprinkle and a baby shower?

Who should you invite to a baby sprinkle?

What should a baby sprinkle wish list look like?

What is a baby sprinkle?

A baby sprinkle is a much smaller, more intimate version of a baby shower, often designed for the arrival of a second (or third, or fourth...) baby.

For parents who like less of a fuss, or consider themselves seasoned professionals, a sprinkle is far more relaxed and quiet, relying less on games and structure and more on gentle, supportive vibes.

A sprinkle usually takes place around the third trimester, and there's also a much smaller emphasis on gifts. Like the name suggests, first-time parents are "showered" with presents like buggies and highchairs, but for any further additions to your brood, you likely already have the essentials, so you're merely "sprinkled" with them.

For a baby sprinkle, you can use MyCrib to find more cute and aesthetic pieces, like an updated wardrobe, new toys or nursery decorations, and assemble them into a registry.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

What is the difference between a baby sprinkle and a baby shower?

Baby Shower

A baby shower is often a more formal gathering. It features a larger guest list, a theme with decorations, and a range of games and quizzes. Parents-to-be also require a longer wish list with more big-ticket items like prams, cribs and car seats.

Baby Sprinkle

A baby sprinkle is a small, relaxed gathering with a reduced guest list. You can still play games and quizzes, but overall, it has a gentler feel with plenty of chit chat. Gifts also tend to be smaller and less expensive, like baby clothes and cuddly toys.

Who should you invite to a baby sprinkle?

The guest list is entirely up to you, but most tend to invite a smaller crowd to a baby sprinkle, so close friends and immediate family. If you're looking for numbers, we'd say around 5-15.

The important thing is that once you have your guest list, you can send them your MyCrib registry by simply popping the link in a group chat or email chain.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

What should a baby sprinkle wish list look like?

As we've said, a baby sprinkle wish list is normally smaller and full of nice-to-have items rather than the essentials. The good thing about MyCrib is you can pull in items from any third-party site like Zara, H&M and John Lewis.

Here's an idea of what you could list for a baby shower vs a baby sprinkle, or you can take a look at MyCrib's baby sprinkle example list.

Baby Shower Wish List

Airo Pushchair

Doona Infant Car Seat & Stroller

Snüz SnüzPod 4 Bedside Crib

Mamas & Papas Born to be Wild Cot Mobile

Mamas & Papas Turtle Bibs

Nanobebe Baby Soothers 0-3 Month

Comfy Cubs Muslin Cloths

Mamas & Papas Snax Highchair

Tommee Tippee Natural Start Baby Bottle Newborn Starter Kit

Baby Sprinkle Wish List

John Lewis Organic Cotton Bodysuits

Truly Baby Faux Fur Lined Snowsuit

Olli Ella Nyla Baby Changing Basket

SnüzCloud Sleep Aid

H&M Teddy storage basket

H&M Round Lion rug

Need more inspiration? MyCrib shows you what expecting parents are adding to their wishlists. See the trending product here.

Set up a baby registry with MyCrib

Read more:

Best thermometers for babies and children in 2025

Best travel cots 2025

Best first pedal bikes
