Unless you've been living under a rock with no Wi-Fi, you'll have heard that Taylor Swift’s new album The Life of a Showgirl dropped on Friday, with all the sparkle and stage-ready glam you’d expect from pop’s biggest name.

But beneath the sequins and big choruses, there’s a new maturity in her lyrics, and if you’re a parent of a young Swiftie, you might be wondering whether this album is OK for your child to listen to.

We’ve broken down what’s in the lyrics and which tracks may not be suitable for younger listeners.

What age is Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl suitable for?

While there’s some explicit language in a few tracks, and its themes are often very adult, touching on sexuality, drug use, fame, trauma, and emotional complexity, The Life of a Showgirl doesn’t carry a parental advisory warning.

However, several tracks include mature themes that might not be appropriate for younger children, including:

Sexual innuendo (e.g. “Wood”)

Drug references (e.g. cocaine in “Actually Romantic”)

Dark emotional content (“Eldest Daughter”, “Father Figure”)

Parents of teens may feel comfortable discussing these themes, but for primary school-aged children or tweens, this album is better left until they’re older.

The Life of a Showgirl tracks that parents might want to screen first

While some of Taylor’s latest songs are more emotional than explicit, several tracks include references to sex, drugs and industry cynicism. These songs may not be suitable for younger listeners, and it's worth previewing them yourself before playing on a shared playlist.

1. “Actually Romantic” – contains a cocaine reference

Believed to be a diss track aimed at Charli XCX, “Actually Romantic” includes an explicit drug reference:

“I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave”

The song also includes sexual innuendo and sarcasm:

“It’s kind of making me wet”

This track is witty and sharp, but clearly written for an adult audience.

2. “Father Figure” – references violence, sex and alcohol

This is the most mature track on the album by far. It reads like a mafia boss monologue and includes multiple adult references:

“I can make deals with the devil because my d**’s bigger”

“You’ll be sleeping with the fishes before you know you’re drowning”

So not suitable for younger children.

3. “Wood” – heavy innuendo

Although upbeat and catchy, “Wood” contains very clear sexual imagery:

"The curse on me was broken by your magic wand"

“Redwood tree, it ain't hard to see / His love was the key that opened my thighs”

The whole song leans into innuendo in a playful but unmistakable way, but not entirely suitable for little ones.

5. “Wish List” – includes f-bombs

This song blends domestic longing with moments of explicit language:

“We tell the world to leave us the f** alone, and they do”

It’s otherwise a romantic, grown-up fantasy of settling down – but not suitable for very young ears due to the uncensored language.

Songs that are safe – but still mature in tone

Not all tracks are problematic. Several are emotionally deep but not explicit:

“The Fate of Ophelia” – literary references, metaphorical lyrics

“Elizabeth Taylor” – dramatic and romantic, no crude content

“Eldest Daughter” – vulnerable and heartfelt, explores childhood trauma

“Honey” – some adult themes, but overall sweet and nostalgic

Even these may feel too emotionally complex for primary-aged children, but teens may relate to the themes of self-esteem, pressure, and identity.

What’s in the title track, The Life of a Showgirl?

The closing (and title) track, a duet with Sabrina Carpenter, is a theatrical tribute to female resilience. It includes no swearing, but the song explores the highs and lows of life on stage:

“They ripped me off like false lashes and then threw me away”

“Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace / Sequins are forever”

It’s an empowering anthem – but written for listeners who understand the cost of fame, not young children.

Final verdict: Is The Life of a Showgirl appropriate for kids?

In short: no, this album is not suitable for younger children.

While there’s little in the way of graphic swearing, The Life of a Showgirl contains:

Direct references to cocaine and alcohol

Sexual innuendo and suggestive lyrics

Themes of trauma, fame, manipulation and regret

For teens and older Swifties, it’s a bold, confident record that may spark conversations around mental health, power dynamics, and identity. But for younger children, many tracks are likely too mature.

The bottom line for parents

This isn’t 1989 or Lover. Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl marks a new, grown-up chapter. It’s artistic, theatrical, and packed with rich storytelling – but it’s not family-friendly listening for the school run.

If your child is under 12, we recommend previewing the album yourself before adding it to their playlist.

Read more:

Toniebox 2 Review

How to get cheap Cadbury World tickets

Best family Christmas breaks and experiences in the UK for 2025

It may feel like a way off but as the first bit of frost starts to cling to our windowsills, it's time to well and truly start looking forward to Christmas.

So, how about Christmas at Alton Towers? We're big fans of the Stoke-on-Trent theme park, with it making an appearance on our best theme parks for families guide, and we were lucky enough to visit Alton Towers' Halloween event, Scarefest, last October, too.

So what does Alton Towers have in store for families this Christmas? The theme park as we know it hibernates for the winter, and in its place you'll find festive shows, overnight stays like Santa Sleepover and festive family breaks, as well as activities such as The Reindeer Games.

Let's find out more.

Buy Christmas at Alton Towers day tickets from £18 at Alton Towers

Jump to:

What is Alton Towers doing for Christmas?

Are there age restrictions at Alton Towers festive events?

What are the dates for Christmas at Alton Towers 2025?

What are the festive family breaks at Alton Towers?

What is Santa Sleepover at Alton Towers?

How much does the Alton Towers Santa Sleepover cost?

What is Alton Towers doing for Christmas?

Alton Towers is transforming into a winter wonderland this Christmas and — dare we say — the theme park has a sleigh full of festivities in store for you and your family in December.

The Christmas magic seems to have sparkled and settled in CBeebies Land, predominantly, with the Towers Street area decorated in all of its festive glory, too.

As you wander around Alton Towers, you and your little ones will have the chance to meet various Christmas characters, and we're sure if you ask nicely, you'll be able to snap a photo with the merry guests.

No family Christmas event is complete without Santa's Grotto! Santa has travelled from the North Pole to Mistletoe Lane at Alton Towers to spend quality time with your family. As well as meeting Santa, you can also take a photo with Mr Claus to commemorate the special day.

All this plus a range of interactive games for kids to play in groups and new festive live shows, yet to be announced. Day tickets in the Christmas period start from just £18.

Buy Christmas at Alton Towers day tickets from £18 at Alton Towers

Are there age restrictions at Alton Towers festive events?

A lot of the festivities at the Alton Towers Christmas event take place at CBeebies Land, and the rides here are aimed at children between the ages of one to six.

What are the dates for Christmas at Alton Towers 2025?

Alton Towers is open from March until November each year, however, when the theme park as we typically know it is closed, the Christmas Days Out dates and Festive Short Breaks run from December to February half term. The November and January dates that Alton Towers is open are as follows:

28th - 30th Nov

5th - 7th Dec

12th - 23rd Dec

26th Dec - 4th Jan

The Alton Towers Waterpark is open almost all year round, however, not all of the rides are (but more on this later). You can find all of the dates that Alton Towers is open for Christmas on the theme park's handy opening times page.

What rides are open for Christmas at Alton Towers?

As well as the Christmas activities, there are plenty of rides still open in CBeebies Land at Alton Towers, which are perfect for younger children. This Christmas, you and your family can enjoy Bugbie Go Round, In The Night Garden Magical Boat Ride, Justin's Pie-O-Matic Factory, Peter Rabbit Hippity Hop, Postman Pat Parcel Post, Heave Ho, Marauder’s Mayhem, Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure, Go Jetters Vroomster Zoom Ride, Something Special Sensory Garden, Sharkbait Reef by SEA LIFE, Big Fun Showtime, Furchester Hotel Live, Andy’s Adventures Dinosaur Dig, JoJo and Gran Gran: At Home, and Hey Duggee Big Adventure Badge.

It's worth noting that the biggest rides at Alton Towers, such as The Smiler, Oblivion, and Wicker Man, will go into hibernation for the winter period.

What are the festive family breaks at Alton Towers?

The festive family breaks at Alton Towers combine an overnight stay with festive fun. They typically include one-day entry to the Alton Towers theme park, a festive evening meal, tickets to a traditional pantomime and an overnight stay in one of Alton Towers's themed hotels. The following day, you enjoy a breakfast buffet, the Alton Towers waterpark, and crazy golf.

Festive breaks start at £91 per person and book up quickly once the leaves start to drop, so get yours soon.

Book Alton Towers festive breaks from £91

What is Santa Sleepover at Alton Towers?

UK kids are playing outside less. Here’s why – plus expert tips to help your child swap screen time for fresh air fun.

You might have memories of making mud pies in the garden with siblings, of playing football in your local park, or of hanging out in public spaces with your neighbours. But today’s kids don’t seem to be playing outside as much as previous generations.

Outdoor Toys, a retailer of playground equipment, asked over 1000 UK parents of five to 12-year-old children about their outdoor play habits, screen time, and barriers to playing outside in July 2025.

The survey found that while 33% of the parents said that their children played outside for one to two hours a day, 30% said they played outside fewer than four times a week and 26% spent three hours or more on screens each day.

The amount of time spent playing outdoors varied from region to region; 40% of parents in Scotland said that their children played outside for one to two hours each day, while 29% of Manchester children spend less than an hour a day outdoors. And in Bristol, 13% of parents say their children only go outdoors at the weekend.

Why are children playing outdoors less than previous generations?

According to the survey, there are plenty of reasons why children are spending less time outdoors:

A lack of nearby parks or playgrounds (30%)

A lack of private outdoor space (15%)

A lack of time around school and work routines (29% across the UK, but this rose to 37% in Northern England and 36% in Scotland)

Poor weather (23%)

Natalie, nature play specialist at evergreenexploring.org, says: “We know that almost three in 10 parents say lack of free time is a barrier – but even small moments outside can spark big changes. At Evergreen Exploring, we’ve seen how outdoor play supports everything from physical development and motor coordination to creativity, problem-solving, resilience and vocabulary growth. These are the foundations children need to thrive – and they’re often built through mud, movement, and moments of trial and error.

“By stepping away from screens and into nature, children engage more fully with the world around them, build social skills, and learn to navigate challenges in ways that screens simply can’t replicate.”

Tips for getting kids outdoors:

Natalie and Outdoor Toys have some pointers for helping children get enthusiastic about the outdoors and fitting outside play into busy schedules.

Turn a walk into a mini adventure. Make the journey home from school fun, collect autumn leaves, take photos of the sky, doodle cloud creatures, or hunt for bugs and birds. After the clocks change, spotting nocturnal animals like hedgehogs and owls adds excitement while encouraging curiosity and physical activity.

Take homework outside. Move reading, spellings, or projects outdoors on a picnic blanket. Fresh air and a change of scenery can boost focus, creativity, and mood, supporting both mental wellbeing and learning.

Schedule evening play. Set a regular slot for post-dinner park visits, stargazing walks, or short nocturnal treasure hunts in safe, well-lit areas. Routine outdoor time promotes fitness, mental health, and family connection.

Don’t wait for perfect weather. Wrap up warm, embrace puddles and mud, and reward yourselves with a hot drink afterwards. Active outdoor play builds resilience, encourages physical fitness, and creates lasting memories, even on darker, wetter evenings.

Read more:

Best outdoor playhouses for kids of all ages in 2025

9 games your toddler will want to play in the park, right now

MPs call for return to outdoor play in England as experts warn childhood is 'shrinking'

Most parents would welcome a government cap on how long kids can spend on social media each day as many admit they struggle with setting boundaries at home, according to new research from Uswitch.

Whether it’s time limits on Roblox or parental controls on Instagram, managing social media use has become a tricky part of family life. And it’s not just parents worried about this — the government is considering limiting social media for children, too.

Peter Kyle, former Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, said he would make announcements on a potential screen time limit for children this autumn (although this may not be the case now that Liz Kendall has taken over the role in the recent cabinet reshuffle). A survey by Uswitch, a comparison and switching service, found that two thirds of the 500 parents they surveyed supported government intervention into children’s screen time.

The survey also found that one in five parents said they were unsure of what a “reasonable” daily amount of screen time is for children, but that 66% of the parents strongly or somewhat agreed with a two-hour daily social media limit for their children.

This contrasts to how much time their children were actually spending online — 21% of parents said that their children spent between one and three hours a day online, and 12% said their children spent three or more hours online.

And while 73% said they were confident in managing their children’s use of social media, 35% of parents said that they were concerned about monitoring their children’s screen time.

Home internet tools can help cultivate healthier online habits

You can change parental controls directly in social media apps or on websites, but Max Beckett, a broadband expert at Uswitch, says that home Wi-Fi tools can also help to support healthier screen time habits in families, especially when it comes to social media use.

“We know from our research that 32% of parents struggle to monitor social media use as their children have access to multiple devices or accounts, and it’s not just social media parents need to think about. Keeping tabs on YouTube, streaming platforms, and gaming services can be just as time-consuming, and they’re often accessed on shared family devices,” Max says.

“Broadband-level controls allow parents to manage these platforms consistently, whether they’re being used on a phone, computer, or games console,” Max says. “Many Wi-Fi routers include features such as family filters to block inappropriate content, the ability to plan connectivity hours, or even the option to set access for specific devices like tablets, consoles, or laptops.”

Tips for managing social media use

Max also shared some practical tips to help parents manage their children’s social media use.

Have open conversations. “The first step to avoiding resistance from young family members is to have a calm discussion around what they enjoy out of their time online. Share your concerns openly and focus on the positive impact of managing their social media use together,” he says.

Set boundaries. “Start by agreeing on daily limits and creating screen-free zones like the dinner table and before bed,” Max says. “It may also be helpful to model this behaviour yourself, so be mindful of your scrolling habits to show you’re aligned as a family on your approach to social media.”

Make the most of your broadband’s parental controls. “Your internet provider will have its own set of unique safety features which help to give you autonomy over your family’s screen time. This will give you peace of mind knowing the controls you add will apply no matter what device your child is using,” he says.

Be flexible. “One size does not fit all when it comes to striking the balance of social media use. Regularly review limits set on your children as they grow and try allowing them to set their own limits to feel empowered by their online choices,” Max says.

Read more:

Fewer than half of parents use parental controls on their kids’ devices – but this isn't necessarily a bad thing

New law helps protect kids from harmful content online - here's what it means for your family

How to put parental controls on iPhone

For older children there’s a demonstration of a replica of Baby, the first computer to store and run a program, which was developed in Manchester.

Book Museum of Science and Industry tickets for free

Museum of Illusions tickets

The Museum of Illusions is a fascinating experience packed with optical illusions and impossible tricks that are sure to wow your kids.

If bedtime feels like a nightly battle, you’re not alone. Whether you’ve got a wide-eyed newborn or a toddler who’s suddenly turned into a night owl, getting little ones to sleep can sometimes feel like an impossible task.

But here’s the good news: a simple, predictable set of calming steps each night can help your baby or toddler understand that it’s time to wind down, making it easier for them to fall asleep. And a smoother bedtime means you’ll get some time to yourself in the evenings too.

Whether you’re settling a newborn or navigating bedtime with a lively toddler, this guide takes you through the key steps to creating a bedtime routine that works for your family.

There isn’t one single routine that works for every child. But Theresa Ross, a sleep therapist and clinical nurse specialist in paediatric sleep services at Evelina London Children's Hospital, tells MadeForMums that good routines are realistic, simple, not rushed, not longer than 40 minutes, easy for other caregivers to follow, and fit into your schedule.

“If it doesn’t feel right for you and your child, you can easily change routines and find something you're comfortable with,” she says.

“Pick a good time to start, with minimal distraction, and implement it for at least one month.”

From gentle pre-bed activities to sleep environment tips, here’s how to build the perfect bedtime ritual, complete with expert-approved tips.

1. Choose the right time

“Use your child’s sleep cues to give you an idea of when they are tired and start your routine 30 mins beforehand,” Theresa says.

These cues can include:

Rubbing their eyes or ears

Snuggling into you

Avoiding stimulating objects

Becoming fussy or grizzly

Staring off into space

It’s important to time children’s naps so that they are tired again by bedtime — or else it will be harder for them to settle. A later nap will probably lead to a later bedtime.

“There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, but many families find that bedtimes between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. work well,” shares Theresa.

2. Start with some calming wind-down time

Begin the bedtime routine with some quiet time. Turn off the television and any screens, and avoid bright lights or rowdy play for at least 10 minutes before you start the bedtime process.

This helps your little one transition from the busy activities of the day to a calmer state, ready for sleep.

“Spend some quiet time talking, singing, or reading,” Theresa suggests.

Deborah, a member of the MadeForMums community, allows her toddler to have books in bed. She says: “I put a nightlight in the room and a selection of books and very quiet toys. But if they make lots of noise, I will take them away.”

3. Make bathtime count

Next up is a calm, relaxing bath before bed. It only needs to last five to 10 minutes.

“If possible, don’t return to the family room after bathtime as this may be too stimulating,” Theresa says.

MadeForMums has tried and tested the best bathtime products out there in our Toilet and Bathtime Awards, from toys and accessory to newborn bath supports.

4. Try a massage for babies

“A gentle massage for about five minutes can be relaxing and great for bonding,” recommends Theresa.

“Baby massage can be gentle and soothing. Stroke their skin and, if you like, use oil or camomile gels. Baby foot massage is great too, using circular motions for 10 minutes or so from the tip of their toes to the heel of their foot,” Jo Frost, former host of the TV show Super Nanny, writes for MadeForMums.

5. Put pyjamas on in the right place

“Always put on their nightclothes in their bedroom,” maternity nurse and sleep expert Jo Tantum recommends, because this will create happy associations between your child’s room, pyjamas, and sleep.

If you’re not sure how many layers your baby needs, MadeForMums has a guide on what babies should wear to bed and how that changes with the seasons.

6. Incorporate one last feed/drink

Feeding your baby right before bed can help them sleep for longer periods at night, as they won’t wake up because they are hungry.

“If your baby is still waking for a number of feeds at night, one tip I have is to help them take as much pre-bed milk as possible by feeding before AND after their bath (or bedtime routine),” Chris McFadden, a baby sleep consultant, says. This means they are as full as possible before bedtime.

Theresa says: “If you feed your baby just before bed, they may fall asleep during feeding. If this happens, gently wake them up so they are drowsy but awake when laid down in the cot, helping them learn to self-soothe.”

For toddlers, offer them one last drink of water before getting into bed. “Try to avoid your child eating or drinking anything other than water within an hour of going to bed or after brushing their teeth, to protect their dental health,” Theviya Naveenan, a London-based dentist and former committee member of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, tells MadeForMums.

7. Don’t skip storytime

Reading a bedtime story is a great way to soothe your child once they’re in bed.

“My three-year-old is on the go from morning until night. People are amazed by her inability to sit still but the one thing that always stops her in her tracks is a good book. If I offer to read to her, she’ll always climb up on my lap and stay there, book after book, really calming down,” Allison Rebenack, a member of the MadeForMums community, says.

MadeForMums testers tried reading The Rabbit Who Wants to Fall Asleep, a book that claims to help children fall asleep during or just after it is read to them.

We also have a list of the top five books for bedtime.

8. Make one last toilet visit

For older babies and toddlers, make a toilet or potty visit the last thing before bed. This step is especially helpful if you’re working on night-time dryness or stopping bed-wetting.

And it can help to avoid nighttime wakeups for the toilet, too.

9. Make sure goodnight means exactly that

For toddlers, being firm with your “goodnight” can help to signify that it’s time for bed, no discussion.

“Be confident, tell your tot the new routine and avoid engaging in too much conversation about it, as you’re the boss now! Don’t be enticed back into the bedroom and stick to your mantra: ‘It’s sleep time, good night,’” health visitor Annette Maloney says.

“When they do come into your room, pop them back into their own bed without fuss, say ‘goodnight’ and repeat as often as you have to,” she adds.

For younger children and babies, there are different methods for leaving your baby alone to sleep at night, including the Ferber method and the chair method.

Top tips for creating the perfect bedtime routine

Make sure your child’s sleeping environment is comfy and safe. For babies, keep their bedroom at around 18-19°C and keep toys out of their cot. For older children, help them personalise their bedroom with their favourite cuddly toys, posters, and bedding.

Keep it consistent — “Babies and toddlers love routine, as they feel safe and secure when they know what happens next. It doesn't matter what the routine is, but it must be the same every night – consistency is the key!” Jo Tantum says.

If your toddler resists a bedtime routine, offer them choices to help them feel involved while you keep the timing and steps the same. For example, ask them which pyjamas they want to wear, or which story they want to read together.

A simple bedtime routine can help make the process of getting your child into bed easier and more enjoyable for both of you. You might not get it down right away, but don’t be afraid to make tweaks to find out what works for you and your family. There’s no right way to do it — the perfect bedtime routine is one that helps everyone in your family get the rest they need.

Co-parenting this summer? Here’s how to plan, communicate and keep children’s wellbeing at the heart of holidays.

The school summer break can be a mix of joy, exhaustion, and logistical miracles for any family. But for divorced or separated parents, those six long weeks often need even more forethought. From agreeing holiday dates to maintaining bedtime routines, the way you approach planning can make all the difference to how happy – and stress-free – your child’s summer turns out.

And with about another four weeks of Summer 2025 to go, and plenty of future school holidays on the horizon, it's never too late to get organised.

Sarah Jane Boon, partner in the family law team at Charles Russell Speechlys, has shared her advice for creating a summer holiday plan that works for everyone, with children’s needs firmly at the centre.

“The best sort of parenting plan is one which continues to evolve and adapt to shape the needs and wishes of a child as they grow older. The agreement for summer holidays one year may not be appropriate a year later, and so it is important to keep plans updated,” Sarah Jane says.

Create a clear, flexible plan you both agree on

“Ensure the dates for, and division of, the children’s school holidays are well-documented within a written plan,” says Sarah Jane. “While informal agreements can work, a well-drafted parenting plan provides clarity and serves as a reference point should misunderstandings arise.”

An effective plan should:

Detail specific arrangements for the summer holidays so that everyone knows what they are doing and where they should be, lessening the likelihood of disappointments or arguments

Set out when children will have time with each parent. This allows each parent to definitely get the parenting time they are entitled to and means that you can make plans for when you don’t have the kids, too.

Include sufficient provision for how any disputes between the parents are to be resolved. This could be through mediation or consultation with a family lawyer, Sarah Jane suggests.

Avoid unilateral decisions

It’s tempting to make quick choices during the holidays, especially if you’re excited about a trip or a special summer activity. But skipping consultation can backfire.

“Amending a parenting plan requires mutual consent from both parents,” Sarah Jane says. “Conflict can occur when one co-parent makes unilateral decisions over the summer holidays without consulting the other.”

This could include taking children out of school early for holidays without agreement, or changing agreed routines – for example, much later bedtimes – without discussion.

These changes might feel minor in the moment, but they “can lead to tension in the co-parenting relationship and may potentially cause distress for the child,” Sarah Jane says.

“To avoid this, prioritising open and child-focused communication, early planning, and flexibility is key.”

Remember that your children’s wellbeing comes first

Even the sunniest summer full of fun plans can feel unsettling for a child moving between two homes. The key, according to Sarah Jane, is to keep checking in with them.

“Navigating the summer holidays post separation isn’t just challenging for parents, but children, too. Every child is different, and it is therefore important to encourage your child to share their feelings, whether they are positive or negative,” she says.

“Co-parents should strive to set aside personal differences and work collaboratively to focus on the priority for the summer holidays – creating fun and lasting memories for a child who feels supported and loved by both parents.”

Some children will adapt quickly, while others might need extra reassurance – or even professional support – if they’re finding the changes hard. This might mean:

Making time for quiet chats so your child can talk about how they’re feeling

Involving them in age-appropriate parts of the planning – like picking an activity

Keeping some consistent routines across both homes so they feel secure

The aim is to create a summer your child will remember for all the right reasons: love, fun, and the reassurance that both their parents have their back.

Read more:

A single parents' guide to child contact arrangements

A single parents' guide to child maintenance payments and benefits

School's out, but should bedtime still be in?
